what's going on? No answer to 2weix loss of BTC 200 either. Is piuk on vacation?

2weix's coins were lost because of an issue with the first version of the android app. He generated a new address and it didn't properly sync with the server. Unfortunately with the phone being rooted and accessing the local wallet stored on the app the coins are permanently lost. The the bug was fixed a while ago in the new version of the app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=piuk.blockchain.android).

If it's a bug, do you at least partially take responsibility and are offering a partial refund?

I agree with 2weiX here. If a person looses money because of your application's bug, you should atleast partially refund him/her.

I dont agree with this.

2weix' loss is extremely unfortunate and I feel with him for 2 reasons:

  • I've lost considerable amounts of coins due to software problems (caused by myself mostly)
  • I've lost (albeit very little) bitcoins in a way very similar to what 2weix has experienced

It's impossible to deliver bug-free software. Piuk stated he holds responsible for fixing bugs as soon as possible. That's about all you can ask (except maybe for the software to be opensource). Otherwise you're stifling innovation (noone will release any kind of bitcoin wallet software if he's liable for anything bad that happens through the use of it). If you're still demanding to be protected from software faults, you are advised to test wether the software will do what you desire in the circumstances you intend to use it in before actually using it.

It would be generous and forthcoming of piuk to offer partial compensation ("refund" is the wrong word because nothing was received by piuk, at least we have to assume) and I'm pretty sure he would do it if it was possible. But of course he cannot do this because there is no way for him to discern real from fraudulent loss reports and the latter would bankrupt him in no time.

You are right! Maybe I got too emotional, as this has happened with me before.

And regarding problem with shared send, what about other users who are missing money?

Happy to!

1) No, with blockchain.info you get pretty much everything from Blockchain.info's servers. Your transaction list, your balance, your outputs that you sign, etc.

2) There isn't a way to opt out at this time - turning on mixing also helps other users as you'll be contributing to our mixer volume Smiley

3) Yes. We also have watch only addresses and accounts (say, you manage a bunch of Inputs.io websites) on the planned features list.

Thank you again! Where can I learn more about the mixing process?

Thanks for answering. I would like to clear a few things.

There's a few reasons 'why not do something like blockchain.info':

Blockchain.info does have access to your wallet. You get all of your information from Blockchain.info's central servers. They could do a lot of things, like make you sign outputs to their addresses, make up transactions that were never transmitted, and if you use their API they have your private key already. Not to mention they can include malicious JS.
Are you talking about, when we create a wallet .. they are the one generating all this for us? How about if we rather create an account offline, and then add it to BlockChain.info?

Features like mixing require control of private keys as well as off chain transaction. It's possible to use Inputs.io in a way that limits your counterparty risk to just that we won't double spend.
What if we don't want to use mixer? Do you provide an option to opt-out, and get full control over your account.

We have redundancy plans (aka 'dead man's switch'), both automated and manual. This isn't just for seizes / etc, the hot pocket will dump all coins in secure storage if it detects an intrusion.
My question is can we move to other services if we want to? and can we add externally generated wallets? Something like an import/export feature.

I really like you website, but have a few question before I create a wallet account..

  • I din't find any privacy policy. Can you please share a link?
  • Somewhere in this thread I read, you have our private key.. is that true? Why not do something like blockchain.info, where they don't have access to your wallet at all.
  • How do you store our personal information like email and IP? What if a gov agency ask you for any particular account? What information can you provide?
  • If your website gets taken down tomorrow by XYZ agency, do we still have our wallet or it's gone with you? Can we export or move to other service or a desktop client?
  • Do you support closing accounts? If yes, do you erase information from your systems?

As far as I know they only share client side code, so to answer your question send-shared server side code is not public.

Send shared seems broken with Blockchain.info. I'm sure piuk will fix it eventually.

Why would you use a wallet that destroys your privacy in the first place (change address reuse) and then sells it back to you for 0.5%? Some web wallets are ethical and offer you free mixing right off the bat.

 Roll Eyes

Can you(or someone) please elaborate a little more, what is meant by address reuse here?

Well this is a pretty sick bug then! I will open a topic about my case as soon as I'm able to post, I did some testing and 50% of my 8 shared send transactions did not came through, but the money did arrived at someone else! For now piuk owns me more then $600.

Can you tell me about those web wallets, do you use them? No unreliable ones please.

This is not a good news. Does that mean we cannot trust them with shared send?

BlockChain.info - Privacy and Anonymity

Hi, I'm new here and new to Bitcoin world! I was wondering how anonymous and private are online wallets, like blockchain, coinbase etc.

I'm specially interested in BlockChain because they seem to have a good amount of security. I read their privacy policy and their was this..

Quote
What we collect
We may collect the following information:

Contact information including email address, skype or google talk username
iPhone or mobile device identifier
ip address
Yubikey or other two factor authentication token
and this ..

Quote
What we do with the information we gather
We require this information to understand your needs and provide you with a better service, and in particular for the following reasons:

Payment Notifications
Internal record keeping.
We may use the information to improve our products and services.
We may periodically send promotional emails about new updates which we think you may find interesting using the email address which you have provided.
and also this ..

Quote
Controlling your personal information
We will not sell, distribute or lease your personal information to third parties unless we are required by law to do so. We may use your personal information to send you promotional information about third parties which we think you may find interesting if you tell us that you wish this to happen.

Piecing all this together, it means that they can associate a wallet with some personally identified information like email which is* shared with gov agencies. And they don't allow closing accounts, which makes it more suspicious. I know I can download the client and use it, instead of them but would like to learn.

What do you guys think about it? What is your opinion about anonymity of blockchain and other online wallets in general?

*the policy says may but with the current prism scandal, I don't believe that.
