how about making a deal with farmers. A couple of RasPi or Arduino and some IR detectors. Have them placed near those gigantic industrial chicken coop. their head movement would cut the beam and the timing would generate the data.

Not safe. A clever attacker will hide a kinect in there and figure out your numbers. Nevertheless, it would certainly be the funniest RNG ever invented  Grin

Q: Why did the chicken cross the road ?

A: To generate enough entropy.

Option A:

Put it on an encrypted USB stick, and attach that to your dog's collar.

Option B:

Bury the encrypted USB stick in a waterproof container in the yard.

I can only imagine the classified ad if things went awry in a few years with option A:

"Lost dog, 10,000,000 $ reward for safe return with his collar intact."

The only way ebay/paypal can make me happy is if they fuck off & die.

I also consider eBay and PayPal embracing bitcoin then fucking off and dying a valid and desirable option in the long term.

Re: bitcoin themed plastic wallet - 3d printed!

I have a RepRap MendelMax, I could print something for you in ABS (recommended if it is going in your pockets). I only have a single extruder fitted to my machine (I only have single material at a time capability at the moment).

Your design, as it looks from the screenshot would be quite hard to print, it will definitively require support structures, those leave marks. With a sanding, heat gun treatement and an acetone vapor treatement, I could probably pull it off.

PM me if you are interested. Make me an offer Smiley. I will only expect any payment after you are satisfied (pictures, shipped, etc...).

Here are my Thingiverse credentials: http://www.thingiverse.com/jothan/designs

and this is precisely why i don't like RepRaps. without support structures, it's really limited as a 3d printer. shapeways offers printing in nylon based plastics (selective laser sintering of powder) a sandstone like material and steel (printing glue into a powder) and a few others too. great results, i've found. for now, jothan, i'll pass. (besides, i don't have any money to pay you...)

Thanks for the reply. I'm planning to move to printing nylon and polycarbonate this year if the prusa nozzle comes out one day. No problem for passing, I am always eagerly looking for a new challenge. Smiley

My favorite, as spoken by someone on this forum (can't remember who):

"BITCOIN IS MAGIC INTERNET MONEY !"

Helps if you scream it real loud then drop to the floor, mouth foaming.

As of now, not a single issuer on GLBSE had any info relayed to them.

Ok, then I guess I shall wait on Nefario. I thought he had managed to get that information out.

Patrick, once you have that info, please pay out my account.

Sorry and thanks for all the fish !

For the avoidance of doubt, PPT is closed.  The claim process via GLBSE is no longer possible and in excess of 85% of bonds have been paid mostly at full value via market trades, and a lesser amount via the insurance scheme.

I filled out the GLBSE form, sent you a PM and I did not get the insurrance paid.

Username: alexpisjoe

Please fix this.

I have a pm from you and that's it - you provided no details.  I'm not paying an unknown amount to an unknown address from someone that I don't know if they actually purchased any bonds.  On that basis, I could say it's done - but it's not.

I don't know exactly how many bonds and which series I had when GLBSE closed down. It should be around ~100. I asked you to pay to the address that I provided to GLBSE during the claim process and they should have relayed it to you. I did not give out another address since the one I provided to GLBSE was done so after authentication. I don't remember which address, but if you remind it to me, I can sign a message with it. My GLBSE username was "alexpisjoe".

I will provide any other information you need for authentication or otherwise.

At this point, I could provide you with the GLBSE login password for that account. Do you have the amount by username ?

The first mover could always invalidate the unpublished transaction by sending the coins to himself ? In the worst case, both parties would attempt a double-spend.

Re: Decentralized order execution of colored coin securities

Both parties need to commit to trades at the same time. Otherwise,

1) seller offers bitcoin for coloredUSD
2) buyer accepts offer
3) seller signs his side of txn (seller can no longer back out)
4) buyer watches bitcoin price
If bitcoin price goes up, sign txn -> profit
If bitcoin price goes down, do not sign txn -> find new seller offering more better exchange rate.

You need to force people to move simultaneously. Otherwise the party who moves first will always take a loss. (i.e. it is like the seller is giving away a free option)

Ouch reality hits hard.

It would only be an "option" as long as there is no other party that could swoop in and actually execute the trade.

I'll go back to messing with my RepRap printer and solving the halting problem. Thanks for the reality check.  Grin

Decentralized order execution of colored coin securities
by
jothan
on 24/10/2012, 03:41:00 UTC
Colored coins have been talked a lot recently, I apologize in advance if a proposal like this has already been made.

I suggest a way to execute orders without a trusted third party using colored coins. Here is how it would work.

  • Buyers and sellers of a security would publish the trades they are willing to make via a distributed medium (such as an overlay network, IRC, whatever).
  • Once an order match has been detected by either peer, they establish communication.
  • The security buyer (offering regular bitcoins) chooses a list of outputs and a change address for the coins that will be sent to the seller. The buyer also chooses a receiving address for receiving the colored coins. These parameters are communicated to the seller.
  • Using the parameters provided by the buyer, the seller builds a transaction transferring the colored coins to the buyer and transferring the regular coins to himself. The seller signs the colored coin inputs and leaves the regular bitcoin inputs from the buyer unsigned.
  • The seller transmit the partial transaction to the buyer.
  • The buyer validates that the trade is conform to the agreed trade and signs the regular bitcoins in the transaction over to the seller. The transaction is now fully signed.
  • The buyer publishes the transaction on the bitcoin network.

With a system like this, trades would be executed on a first-to-propagate basis and two parties competing for the same securities will look like a double spend.

What do you guys think ?

Bitcoin in itself has no goal. This is like the age-old "What is the meaning of life ?" question.

Bringing down the federal reserve and empowering people are just nice side-effects.

Bitcoin 2 is the most efficient cryptocurrency ever.  The lower your hashing power the faster you solve blocks.

I'm mining Bitcoin 2 at 1.3 x 10-31 hash/s and loving it.

Silly thread is silly. OP, have you ever heard of Occam's razor ?

Re: Using serial numbers on notes for private keys
by

on 14/08/2012, 02:32:17 UTC
Yes, serial numbers would be quite silly as a private key. They are predictable, they are sequential and anybody who handles a bill has the serial number and could empty out the bitcoins.

Hence the old mafia movie saying "bills, used, non-sequential".
