By the time we reach $250/BTC Difficulty will likely be around 18,000,000, so a 1 Ghash/s rig could still bring about $350/month.

This will be the case, unless the dollar price per bitcoin were to skyrocket in the coming weeks (from intense media exposure, I presume), before the difficulty even reaches 4,000,000. I guess we will just have to live and wait.

Re: Solution: How to shift the decimal

Guys, let's not confuse ourselves here. I'm fine with the prefixes, but only as long as they're not mandatory. And I'm a absolutely against eventually switching the meaning of Bitcoin and BTC to represent micro-Bitcoins. This is a horrible idea. Just think of what the final number of BTC will then be: 21 trillion. Not one person can wrap his mind around it, and it is a prime reason folks hate global economics. It's all the meaningless trillions floating around.

Also: don't forget the "small calorie/large calorie" travesty. Everyone's still confused to this day. cal? Cal? kcal?

New Idea (possibly): Mining pyramid
by
kroptofer
on 10/06/2011, 06:12:49 UTC
Okay, so you create a mining pool. But instead of getting his share proportional to contributed computing power, each member gets a chunk depending on how early he joined in. That's about it. Like Bitcoin Randomizer, only for pooled mining. I guess the reward could be adjusted/weighted for contributed hashes/sec to prevent this from being too unfair, and to encourage good mining rigs to join, even later on. So what do you think? Sounds to me like something that should have already been done by now, but I couldn't find it anywhere.

If someone actually implements this, I will be more than satisfied with a 4% tip or something.
(that's a modest 4 percent of the pool's entire gain, but I guess that's up to you... Cry )

Silk Road is being targeted, not Bitcoin. For some reason, all of these articles have titles about the senators attacking Bitcoin when the senators never said anything about that.

Don't be so sure. Schumer did mention a "surrogate currency", and said it in a rather derogatory way. It's all in the tone  of voice,  believe me.

Yeah, I was thinking about this for several days now. Most new users right now are bitcoin buyers - not miners. Therefore the prices are driven way up, and people still prefer to buy 200 bitcoins for $6000 instead of spending time putting together a bitcoin rig for just $1500, which could more than pay for itself in a few months. We just might see the day when you can buy an awesome new computer for just 6 BTC, and the difficulty still manageable.

Same freaking day, dammit! Cheesy No wait, he won by a day. Wow, this forum really doesn't need me here. Enough garbage getting posted already...I guess I should visit the economics threads a little more often. Sincere apologies to fabianhjr. Didn't mean to steal your poll.

I hope they make us look like pigf*cking sodomite necrophiliac pedophile terrorist racist drug-dealing money-laundering gun-running slave-trading kiddy-porn puppy-stomping paint huffers. I need the price to stay down until I finish buying.  Nothing anybody does will kill Bitcoin. Nothing will stop it except nuclear war or a giant asteroid.  Satoshi Nakamoto himself couldn't stop it now. Critical mass has been reached. There is no going back. Cryptocurrency will be money for our great grandchildren. Austrian economics will be called...economics.

Wow.

Re: Has anyone actually ever looked at every line of code?
by
kroptofer
on 03/06/2011, 02:03:26 UTC

This is a misleading question.

You could break the poll down into modules or sections of the code and see how many people had understood every line of each section. No one person need to have looked over/understood every line as long as many people had understood each piece ... unless there was a way to slip something in the cracks.

I see your point and I was kind of expecting a response of this shade. I thought of including several choices, but then I would have to dilute this poll with subjective options like "No. But I have understood most of it" and "No. I have read most of it but only understood a small portion" and "I got the gist of the source files but none of the headers". Or a whole bunch of options for different sections of code and one for those who do not know any C++. Alright, so maybe this would be the better way to go, but that's not what's important. I mostly started this thread to hear from those rare savants who can wrap their minds around the entirety of a program. Guys who are real geniuses like Satoshi Nakamoto must be. So far the closest I've heard was Gavin Andresen in "Making Money" saying "I'm a geek, I understand this stuff".

Now don't take this the wrong way. I'm not trying to prove some sort of anti-bitcoin point here. I already know that a vast majority of people (including myself) will not be able to seriously vote "Yes" in this poll. However, this question has been lingering in my mind since day one.

When a handful of people first downloaded version 0.1, we basically crossed our fingers and trusted this "Satoshi" fellow not to screw us over. This move seems to have payed off pretty well and all, but still: how many people can claim to have actually seen and felt in their very souls the proof that bitcoins are "cryptographically secure" and will be capped off at 21 million? I for one opened some of the .cpp and header files only to be greeted by a sea of vague functions, structures I'm not familiar with, and C++ libraries I have never used. Back In 2009 I'm sure most users were similarly overwhelmed. By now out of the many thousands there must be at least a handful of programmers skilled and persistent enough to stubbornly sit through the whole darn program. I would really like to hear responses from some of them. Thank you.

I want to confess my own little "pizza for a million" moment. Back in late march 2010, I traded well over a thousand bitcoins through New Liberty Standard for about six dollars in my PayPal account. Five of which I then used to purchase Second Life money.

Search Engine Results Snapshots (before & after)
by
kroptofer
on 27/02/2011, 00:59:20 UTC

Here is a screen I captured on January 16th, 2010:

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g352/kroptofer/2bitcoinSearchResultsAsOf16Jan2010.jpg

Now here is a screenshot from today (February 26th, 2011):

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g352/kroptofer/2bitcoinSearchResultsAsOf26Feb2011.jpg

 that's more than a 47-fold increase!

I guess I saved this screen-cap because I had a gut feeling that I will see a dramatic change in a short while.

 Let's not forget about AltaVista:

   January 23rd:

   Today (Again, February 26th, 2011):
http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g352/kroptofer/2BitcoinAltaVistaResultsAsOf26Feb2011.jpg

And does anyone still remember Alltheweb?

   January 23rd, '010:
http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g352/kroptofer/2BitcoinAllTheWebResultsAsOf23Jan2010.jpg

   Today:
http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g352/kroptofer/2BitcoinAllTheWebResultsAsOf26Feb2011.jpg

 And here's Lycos...no, just kidding.
    but seriously,
does anyone have some older screen shots or statistics, maybe ones from 2009?

By the way, is it just me or did the Google logo get a little bit bigger?
Anyway, that's it for now.

Re: Bitcoin, the Global Money
by

Now that you mention it, I'm not sure I understand my question either. Sad

I cannot read your mind, of course. But if you're asking whether a global acceptance of bticoins would end current purchasing power parity, I think it will - on paper, that is. A bitcoin will be equal to one bitcoin everywhere. However, untill material goods can somehow be magically teleported from any place, people will still have to buy locally. This means that the same rules that govern standards of living and purchasing power will continue to apply. You could import from overseas, but this is often a lengthy and expensive process. So you will continue to buy food at your nearest grocery store, and products manufactured within your own or neighboring countries. The work you do daily will likely contribute to the economy of your city, and not to one on anther continent. Because of that, what you can buy with a bitcoin will vary greatly from place to place (and will continue to follow a similar pattern to this map ). I have a hunch that the power of purchasing digital content will become very equalized, though.

Re: Bitcoin logos based on the original icon

but for bitcoin central the bc logo is THE candidate for a favicon v 2.0
Sure, that's a natural and appropriate use of "BC".

"Natural and appropriate", eh?  Well, what if I were to toy around with the logo, and the next favicon would look something like this:

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g352/kroptofer/bitcoinFace1.png

or this:

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g352/kroptofer/bitcoinFace2.png

or heck, maybe even -

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g352/kroptofer/bitcoinMascot1.png

and a horizontal version:

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g352/kroptofer/bitcoinMascot2.png

although instead of simply a favicon, I seem to have made a mascot. Imagine, he could be shooting at some real-world currency characters...alright I just spent way too much time on these, I think I'll go visit one of the geopolitical, socio-economic forums.

Bitcoin logos based on the original icon
by
kroptofer
on 22/02/2011, 05:56:42 UTC
Here is an image I created some months back:

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g352/kroptofer/bitcoin.jpg

I don't know about you, but I still prefer the first logo which had the actual letters "BC" written on the coin

instead of the strange double strikethrough "B" :

It reminds me too much of the dollar and other currencies. Am I the only one bothered by this? Now, I'm obviously no graphic designer, but are there any out there who made logos with a similar way of thinking? (maybe some logos that don't look like the looney tunes title card, unlike mine)

By the way, I have been generating bitcoins since at least April '09, but this is my first post here. I guess I was starting to feel left out of the discussions.
