GekkoScience Hub and Compac F miners suddenly stopped working
by

Hey all,

Been running three Compac F miners for over a year 24/7 using the GekkoScience SUB hub. The other day they suddenly stopped working.

Not sure if this is a hardware issue or software issue, but I'm leaning towards HW due to these red lights on the hub.

I've tried restarting the machines & software, but no success.

Any ideas what could be going on here? I'm hoping the hub isn't fried as it's only a year old.

Thanks

⭐ Merited by vapourminer (1)
I've upgraded to the Gekkoscience 8 Port USB Hub 2.0 (using 12V 10A 120W DC Power Supply) from my original Bitcoin Merch 7-Port USB Hub and now all three COMPAC F sticks are running at 400mhz no problem. Each stick is being cooled by it's own Noctua NF-A4x10 FLX fan.

My issue is that one of the three sticks (the problematic one from the beginning) is running much hotter than the other two. It would burn my finger if I left it on there for too long. I'm trying to figure out why this one is running so much hotter and what temperature is acceptable/safe.

On the USB tester, all sticks are pulling around 5.07V, 1.71A, and 8.7W. My infrared thermometer can't pull the temp, so I used a meat thermometer that read 102F for two sticks and 120F for the other. That doesn't seem too accurate, but I'm not sure how else to get the temp.

Only thing I can think of is I had previously turned the voltage screw quite a bit in the past, but wouldn't I see voltage use different between them if that's what was causing the heat?

Anyways, just looking for some advice so I don't burn up the chip and/or house.

TIA

Nice setup cygan. How did you get the Noctua fans to cool the chips at high frequency? I installed one of each on my sticks, but the fan wasn't powerful enough to keep it cool. Is there software/hardware that can be used to manipulate the fan speed?

For reference, I'm running three sticks on a pi with the following metrics:

  • Stick 1: 335 MHz (38:19)
  • Stick 2: 400 MHz (32:16)
  • Stick 3: 400 MHz (32:16)

My first time hearing about this setting, so I am also curious if it's a problem that the computer can't process a task within the USB's task time? Or if I am understanding that correctly. What is a use case for the numbers?

why is cgminer decreasing core speed? I setup 450 MHz last evening and today it's only 360 MHz

cgminer will automatically reduce the frequency if the asic miner plateaus in order to protect it. This usually happens due to overheating or low voltage.

One of my miners gets adjusted on a regular basis and I've spent a lot of time trying to get it to stay at 400. All the others stay at 400 just fine. I've had them all at 400 before, but it just comes down to how much you want to troubleshoot.

Have prices come down that much since April? I'm seeing the S19 Pro on bitmain's website for $5,940 https://shop.bitmain.com/product/detail?pid=00020220616112636834T0C1ADTd062A

Looks like Dovina is selling them for $3,869 here: https://dovina.en.made-in-china.com/product/xFiJskvTCfcy/China-King-for-Mining-Btc-Bitcoin-Miner-Bitmain-Antminer-S19-PRO-110th-in-Stock.html

Can anyone confirm if this is legit?

Yeah, it's a permission issue.

If you're running Ubuntu or similar, try running lsusb with sudo:

Following-up here to say it was indeed permissions issue. When I used sudo to list USB devices and start cgminer, all works well.

Thanks for troubleshooting with me on this. Got all 3 humming along at 400+ now

Right, that's the issue then. They're not being recognized in the computer through the USB interface, I just assumed those listed were the sticks but apparently they're not.

I was able to get a bit more details just now and this is the message:

USB init, open device failed, err -3, you don't have privilege to access - GSH device 1:7
See README file included for help
GekkoScience detect (1:7) failed to initialise (incorrect device?), restarting

USB init, open device failed, err -3, you don't have privilege to access - GSH device 1:8

USB init, open device failed, err -3, you don't have privilege to access - GSH device 1:9
See README file included for help
GekkoScience detect (1:9) failed to initialise (incorrect device?), restarting

Seems like it's picking them up, but there is a permissions issue. This is where I got lost before

I had the setup up and running with same hub and all 3 sticks before the card got fried, so I'm confident that there is enough power, etc. I have tried with just one stick and it still doesn't recognize.

Here is my cmd line arg:

./cgminer -o stratum+tcp://solo.ckpool.org:3333 -u *btcaddress* -p x --suggest-diff 442 --gekko-compacf-freq 400 --gekko-mine2 --gekko-tune2 60

1) You didn't compile cgminer correctly. This can be anything, from using another source, as Kano's is the one with support for the Compac F, or not passing the correct compilation flags to include compac f support.

2) Check your miner hardware setup.

Here is my output per your recommendation:

1)
cgminer 4.12.0
Built with gekko icarus mining support.

2)
Bus 002 Device 005: ID 2109:1817 VIA Labs, Inc. USB3.0 Hub
Bus 002 Device 004: ID 2109:0817 VIA Labs, Inc. USB3.0 Hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub

I'm using the USB hub that comes from the bitcoinmerch package: Bitcoin Merch® 7 Port Powered USB Hub. https://bitcoinmerch.com/products/3-x-gekkoscience-compac-f-full-kit-combo-up-to-1-05-th-s

The lights come on for each miner and all have their own Noctua fan installed

That includes linux compile steps, but to repeat, on linux:
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade -y

sudo apt-get install -y build-essential autoconf automake libtool pkg-config libcurl4-openssl-dev libudev-dev libusb-1.0-0-dev libncurses5-dev zlib1g-dev git

cd
git clone https://github.com/kanoi/cgminer.git
cd cgminer

CFLAGS="-O2 -march=native -fcommon" ./autogen.sh --enable-gekko --enable-icarus

make

I followed this and it worked great to get cgminer on a new raspberry pi image, so thanks for that. My SD card from bitcoinmerch got fried, so I had to buy a new one and setup cgminer.

I'm able to connect to the pool, but cgminer is not recognizing my USB Compac Fs. Getting "No devices detected!" "Waiting for USB hotplug devices or press q to quit"

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VN2cWSH2Jy3xum3v5HE2Z_47OFa3uGKE/view?usp=sharing

I read through the readme and numerous threads, but have no had success. Anyone familiar with this?

What is the best way to confirm that the miners are hooked up to the pool correctly with my correct BTC address? Is it as simple as the console saying "Connected to solo.ckpool.org diff 442 with stratum as user ***btc address***"?

Was curious if I could easily join a shared pool and how that works. Can I simply join a shared pool and they payout my share?

Really just trying to make sure it's working properly in the super rare case a block is mined.

I'm assuming you're using the BitcoinMerch USB hub:

https://i.imgur.com/tFIqfJi.jpg

That USB hub is quite alright, much better than most, but it has a limit of 2.4A per port. You're hitting that limit when getting towards 400MHz, so try setting it a bit lower, say 380MHz or so. Note that it might be the combined power that is tripping the hub as well, so check your power supply to see how much it is providing. Experiment with different values per miner. You should be able to get up to around 480MHz with a single miner connected.

You can confirm this by connecting one of those cheap USB measuring devices like this one:

https://i.imgur.com/X5haK6Y.jpg

Keep going up towards 400MHz and you'll see that when it reaches 2.4A it will reset.

It's really difficult to find a USB hub with data and power with more than 2.4A. The recommended one is the GekkoScience USB hub which is custom made for USB mining. It's pretty expensive and hard to find though.

https://i.imgur.com/C70ERqM.jpg

That one will allow you to go higher than 400MHz with no issues.

If you do manage to get that one, make sure to have excellent cooling as it will get really hot.

Yep I'm using that hub from Gekko. What does the difficulty setting do? Should I be adjusting this or just leaving it as is? Mine is currently set to 442.

Also, am I able to issue a command to the sticks while actively mining to increase the frequency and/or difficulty? I've been closing out my console to do it, but I'd like to keep the session open while issuing another command if possible.

Thanks

Just received the 3 COMPAC F kit and got the miners up and running. Currently have all three humming along at 400MHz after some troubleshooting with various forum threads. I tweaked the voltage using the bottom right screw, but ultimately think downloading the latest gekko driver settings to ramp up the chips would have solved it.

I wanted to confirm that my settings look correct in the first screenshot in order to keep these little guys on long term as a lotto play. difficulty 442, 400MHz, pool connection, correct cgminer version, correct github fork, etc.

1st screenshot
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1h7KF64IuJRoiHuoPwviInEfbiboNpXGU/view?usp=sharing

I had issues with one of the sticks constantly disconnecting (my words) and trying to ramp back up to the set frequency. This eventually went away, but I don't know why, so I wanted to post a few screenshots of it happening to see if anyone can identify what I'm doing wrong.

Screenshot of the miner ramping up to 335MHZ (after I set it to 400 and it ramped itself back down)

Screenshot of the miner going offline (my words, not sure what its doing)
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1bojODP0cBQY0mq5JcQbWVT84ltCq9idH/view?usp=sharing

Screenshot of the miner w/ logs of it coming back online starting at 200MHz
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OeUtVoLrbNG7_RGnphmxN1WPeUIGDL2L/view?usp=sharing

Lastly, I understand these miners are for fun and could maybe get 20-25 cents in a shared pool. However, I'm trying to understand if they even have a chance at hitting a block solo (I know the chances are 1 in 220million or something). Does my overall hash rate have to be a minimum of the current difficulty 29.79T to even have a chance? Just trying to understand the relationship of hash rate and difficulty.

TIA
