Re: ATTENTION NEWBIES: ALT COIN WARNINGS
by

DO NOT BE CONNED INTO INVESTING INTO NEW ALTCOINS

99.9% of these coins are scams designed to lure unsuspecting newbies into buying them.

Scammers use many of the following methods to lure in people and trick them into investing time/money into these coins:

  • Use marketing techniques(Dogecoin)
  • Premining for Giveaways and Bounties
  • Fancy Logos/Websites/Lengthy Forum posts to fool you into thinking they will support it.

Thank you r3wt for sticking your neck out and telling it like it is however I have to wonder about someone's motives who encourages the removal of the altcoins section given bitcoin's current stagnant growth (vs. altcoins' popularity and increasing market caps).  Is it because you feel threatened that the altcoins have taken and will continue to take new buyers' money rather than have them focus and spend it on bitcoin, thereby increasing the value of BTC, which you presumably hold?

Whatever your motives for this thread are, here are my impressions on dogecoin.

I guess you've seen the now stickied post on their subreddit called "Dogecoin Hype Video Competition" launched about 3 weeks ago that encourages shibes (their community members) to donate coins towards a prizepool?  For those who haven't, a user with the label "hype shibe" (a shibe is short for shiba inu, the dog whose meme the coin is based on) encourages users to create and post hype videos on youtube in order to have a chance at winning prizes.  Over the past 2 months they've gained a reputation as being community-focused with donations to charitable causes, donating doge to the Jamaican bobsled team which, combined with reaching out the key media contacts, was a clever pump and dump that saw price rise to 260 Satoshi practically overnight but soon fall.  They've managed to increase their subscriber base to over 50,000 and it continues to grow.

Recent controversy includes a debate about whether developers should make it a deflationary currency like bitcoin (fixed max # of coins),  vs. inflationary where more coins are introduced into the ecosystem effectively devaluing the coin over time.  Something I noticed on reddit is that whenever there's a sudden drop in value due to massive selling on one or more exchanges, the pumping "to the moon!" memes and joke posts continue to get upvoted to the front page and crowd out the important ones made by what seems like less-experienced investors who are genuinely in need of advice who are likely panic selling.   People are told to calm down, that 1 doge will always be worth 1 doge (ignoring the fact people paid fiat currency for those doges).    That said, there are miners and early adopters who seem to be making a lot of money and I have to admit, their reddit community is a lot friendlier to newbies than bitcoin and litecoin where you're basically ignored, insulted or told to do a search before posting a question - valid advice but not the way you increase adoption.

As long as paypal allows chargebacks and forbids the buying and selling of cryptocurrencies, problems will continue.

Re: HAVE YOU HAD COINS STOLEN ON CRYPTSY?
by

In case you don't have a smartphone, 2FA can also be provided with Yubikey which is a usb key that issues one time password when you press it.  I don't know if crypsty offers that security option though, would be interested in hearing feedback form those who use that exchange.

Also to the OP, I get your frustration but I think you should move on ,threatening to sue for $30 is ridiculous, as is spending $3000 to drag their name through the mud..  Also typing in ALL CAPS A LOT LIKE THIS IS CONSIDERED SHOUTING so if you want to be taken seriously, you'll cut that out.  Finally while it would be nice for an exchange to have all the procedures in place to catch unauthorized account access in real time, the reality is that according to their terms of use or whatever the agreement is called, it's up to an account holder to ensure confidentiality of their login credentials.   Assuming you used Windows, I would suggest reinstalling your operating system to clear it of any suspected malware and use a safer browser like Chrome or Firefox, plus various security software , otherwise Linux, though the latter has a bit of a learning curve.

^^ Thief could have been connected to proxy when sending the email, seems unlikely that they would be so foolish as to connect with their real IP.  That said, what do you have in mind to trace the sender?

Thank you to djeZo for frequent updates here and improvements to the site.  I am watching the rigs list with great interest.  So you're looking for sellers to lower to 0.02 BTC/MH/day , is this based on mining a certain coin or on figures plugged into some profitability calculator?
About pricing, is this for real?  0.0444-0.0464 for Thrash user...why is it over 2x your recommendation?  Either I am misreading it or something is wrong here

If you click on the bid history, I see 1 bid ending with $175 buy it now but don't see mention of the block erupters being labelled antminers.  Am I missing something?  I'm not really familiar with btc mining usbs

Thanks for the advice spam_vt.   I guess you're right it may be less hassle, although when I bought the little bit of btc I had to provide very little personal information whereas I heard some exchanges ask you for full name, address, email address, phone #, etc... even sending of documents.   I heard btc-e doesn't request too much which attracts many traders but they don't carry DOGE yet.

Has anyone used the OP's affiliate site altquick.co for scryptcoin trading?  I was thinking of using it but when I emailed the listed email address it bounced back.   I've pm'ed BuyBitcoin.US but maybe someone else here has personal experience

Interesting service that's so popular in the coming days!  I see just one rig left but lowest stability of the list at 95.00%.  I'm new to this so can someone explain how this stability number is derived?

Also when I click your secure link

I guess if one of your accounts is breached, then it helps to have your fiat/coins spread out between multiple accounts but why else would people want to create multiple accounts?   It seems like a headache to have to manage all those usernames, passwords and email addresses, not to mention 2FA on all of them.

Concerns about 2 localbitcoins sellers
by
letunovskeye
on 10/01/2014, 22:24:00 UTC
Hoping for a price drop when the Chinese and the rest of the world sell off their btc as we approach Jan 31, I am evaluating a couple of locabitcoins sellers in terms of pricing, their requirements, feedback, etc.  General advice says to choose a pro trader with 100+ successful trades, 100% feedback, etc. but I have concerns about 2 of these sellers.  Let me elaborate.

seller #1: Currently the lowest price for cash deposit in Canada, this seller's cash deposit terms request a photo of the deposit receipt with the buyer's username, email address and the escrow code, then ask the buyer to mark payment as complete, then the coins are released.   I think the seller is putting the buyer at risk by communicating their username AND email address because what if they use,  pass your email address to someone with bad intentions or someone intercepts the photo with this info and tries to break into your localbitcoins and/or email address account?   Obviously for safety reasons you should have 2FA enabled on both accounts if you agree to send all the requested details to this seller but I think it introduces too much risk for a slight savings.   What do you guys think?

seller #2: Another seller is someone who is active on this forum and recently received a complaint on their localbitcoins feedback and on their forum from a buyer who claimed that the account # the seller communicated was wrong, that the buyer had to go to 2 banks and both times the tellers told him the account #s were wrong, made allegations that the seller buys and sells to himself to boost his feedback record falsely etc.   Sometimes I wonder if it's possible for people to create multiple localbitcoins profiles and actually buy and sell to themselves, or whether the buyer's claims are false.
If you want to read more, see their forum's Canada topics.   While I think the buyer's claims are dubious, one thing is true: I contacted the seller a month ago through PM here about his pricing (which used to be almost 30% margin over cavirtex - his margin has recently dropped) and to make a deal, but never received a reply.

Localbitcoins.com 180 minute payment window
by
letunovskeye
on 17/12/2013, 09:06:28 UTC
Hello for those who have experience with locabitcoins.com , what happens if you place a buy online by cash deposit order at night from a seller whose payment window is 180 minutes when the bank is closed?   I've been watching seller ads for the past few days and would like to order from one of them but it's night now and of course can't get to a bank within 3 hours since the branches are closed.
I am afraid that if I wait until the morning, the seller will either run out of btc or his/her asking price will be too high.

Another question: There is one seller whose prices I've been watching, they are low now, the profile shows  he/she is "on vacation" but I have their celll phone number.  I don't want to be rude and wake them up but I really want to get a good deal, so what what would you suggest I text him/her to convince them to sell me some coins?

Since my question from 6 days ago about the verification backlog remains unanswered/ignored by the cavirtex rep, does anyone else know what their management team is planning to do to catch up in a big way?  It seems to me that if you have as much backlog as they claim they do with the minimal human resources they have, why don't they go ahead and hire the additional staff needed (does anyone know if they're hiring, who to contact and where their office is located...not their UPS store, but actual office?).  Otherwise if they want to save money, why not outsource the verification task to another firm that's capable of completing it and do so asap?

Gmail seems to have some fans but I'm not sure I'm comfortable giving Google my phone # , knowing they scan content, partner with the nsa and build user profiles that they sell.   Still I know many people use it and other Google services

Also, thanks to others for suggestions but what can I do to ensure that I am not clicking on a site that will result in my pc being infected with malware?
