Re: Bitstamp - wanted to withdraw money and was hit with these weird KYC questions

FYI: I just withdrew a six-figure USD balance and after vaguely answering Bitstamp's questions, the cash arrived in my account in less than a week.

Wait... you get this shit even if you're verified? I thought the whole point of verification was to satisfy AML/KYC demands? If so, why the Spanish Inquisition?

Yea, even if you're verified.  I guess it's for extra KYC data.  It's definitely ridiculous... but at least we know it's not a tactic to prevent withdrawals altogether.

Update: I answered their questions and I'll say that I was not very specific at all.  I said that I received the coins after a relative said he'd invest some of my spare cash into bitcoin for me.  After that, the withdrawal of roughly $80k USD was successfully wired into my bank account.  I only had to wait a week.

I got this message on 1/8/2014, too.  I'd love to know if answering these questions actually helps in receiving my USD.

Thanks Alonzo for your level-headed post.

I'd also like to add that other bubbles (like the real estate bubble) were caused by the Federal Reserve keeping interest rates too low for too long, causing malinvestment. In fact these boom/bust business cycles that bring us recessions and depressions can be avoided by taking the central banks out of the picture.

With Bitcoin, there is no danger of this kind of manipulation.

This is a fascinating insight that I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere.  Our collective concept of what a "bubble" looks like is directly coupled with central bank manipulation, so to use the term in the same sense shouldn't actually apply to bitcoin.

That's not to say bitcoin isn't possibly overvalued at the moment.

Yes. Use the Address Balance Sheet. You could make a tinyurl to make it easier and not have to input in the addresses each time you visit.

Excellent!  That's exactly what I was hoping for.  Thank you very much :-)

View the USD sum of several addresses via blockchain.info?

I have a few primary bitcoin addresses that I use to receive payment.  I can check the balance of these addresses and have them displayed in USD by visiting blockchain.info/address/[myAddress] for each address I own.  This is partially convenient for me because it means I don't have to access the actual wallet to view my balance, however, it can take a while to view each address and mentally add up the balances.  So, is there a way to view the sum of several addresses denominated in USD all at once instead?  Thanks!

Excellent - thanks for clearing that up for me, etotheipi.  Consider me a regular Armory donor now Smiley

Oh and I guess I should have stated earlier that I am doing both paper and digital backups, heh.

Ok.  So, is it accurate to say that a "Digital Backup" of my normal, encrypted wallet from my offline computer will contain the deterministic seed?

"Digital Backup" vs. "Paper backup"

Does a digital backup contain the same information as a paper backup?

Put another way: If I make a thousand offline transactions with a thousand new addresses and later lose my computers to a house fire, will I be able to access all of my funds via a digital backup, or can this only be accomplished via the paper backup?

Furthermore, if the digital backup and the paper backup are both capable of recovering all of my funds, why does my watching-only wallet give me the option to do a digital backup but not a paper backup?

Thanks!

Heh.  Autorun.

Also, why do you assume that you have total control over what gets written?

Because you load whatever CD-writing software you prefer, then you manually add the transaction file.  The disc must be blank in order to write to it, and unless the malicious code has also compromised your burning software, only what you specify to be written will be written.  And once it's written, the disc is physically unwritable.

Is this not currently the best method to transfer the transaction files thus far?  How about it, etotheipi?

Has anyone mentioned burning the transaction files to CD-R or CD-RW to transfer them between the online and offline computer?  Given that you control exactly what files will be burnt to the disc and that it's finalized/locked immediately afterward, isn't that one way to achieve certainty that you aren't accidentally transfering malicious files between the two machines?

I know it's not an ideal solution, but it's a solution nevertheless and seems pretty simple for the overly-protective user.

Thoughts?

Explanatory video
by

on 04/03/2011, 00:49:13 UTC
I've only discovered Bitcoin a few days ago.  I was shocked to learn that it's been around for more than two years without me hearing about it.  I'm your typical LAMP programmer who spends all his free time in cyberspace reading about currency, the federal reserve, anarchism, technology and stateless societies.  How it took me this long to learn about Bitcoins is really perplexing.

Once I heard of Bitcoin, I spent a while to understand how it works.  I had to read and re-read explanations to really figure it all out.  Since popularity is one of the major hurdles to get over for Bitcoin, and because it can be hella confusing for the layman, ya'll need a easily consumable video explanation for the masses.

I don't know if this topic has been pursued before, but "1/29 Explainers" could help immensely.  They basically take really difficult concepts and turn them into simple videos to share with the public.  This page shows a lot of their work:

Just a thought.

EDIT:  Maybe you could pay them with a pooling of some of your BTCs :-)
