Re: 50,000 votes on Dropbox website and counting! bitcoin adoption imminent?

Hate to say this but just because a bunch of people vote for it doesn't mean they will begin to accept bitcoin. It might not make financial sense for them to do so right now.

Doesn't make financial sense?  It would be incredibly easy to add a BitPay or Coinbase option.

I'm surprised most sites don't do this.

Re: WHO SOLD <$58???
by

I sold at $20, $30, $90, and got out at $220

In my opinion bitcoin was overvalued at $30, and is still overvalued now.

Selling below $58 isn't stupid unless you bought in way higher

I bought in at $10 and was dropping my jaw when it got up to $30.  That's a 200% return on my investment, which is usually unheard of.

There have been so many times this past month I've said "Man, $40/$50/$60 is definitely the upper limit.  I should sell now and buy back in when its cheaper" but I sat on my bitcoins and it's worked so far.

Anyone else think that the price of bitcoins over time looks exactly like the Gartner Hype cycle?  Which is specifically designed to measure adoption of new technologies over time

If I remember correctly,
Bitcoin Magazine is not Matthew's deal, it's run by Vladimir.  I think Matthew was just an editor or something

I even remember at some point Vladimir telling him to take it out of his avatar pic during the bet because it was bad publicity.

oh wait i got a question: how will affect this the future of bitcoins ? because if this dude become president he can easily outlaw bitcoin in US and ban US citizens to use bitcoins (the same way it did with poker so all go to vegas) this is dangerous stuff

Yes, that is also a pertinent question.  Especially if the feds use this as an example of how bitcoin can be used for less than legal activities.

has the press actually picked this up other than that one local paper?

no one seems to be taking it seriously

It's on the front page of reddit.  Even if nobody takes the tax returns seriously I'm hoping some people will say "Bitcoin? What is that" and look into it

http://nashvillecitypaper.com/content/city-news/anonymous-group-allegedly-hacked-romney-tax-records-franklin-firm

An anonymous group claims to have gotten access to all of Romney's 1040 tax returns and is threatening to release them by Sept. 28th

They have 2 bitcoin addresses, one in favor of releasing and the other opposed.  Whichever reaches $1,000,000 worth of bitcoins first 'wins'.

If the one opposed to releasing the returns wins, they will never be released.  If the other wins, they will be released immediately.
Now, It's not clear that the tax returns are real, although some places have confirmed receiving them.

I see this being very good for bitcoin prices in the short term.  Even if neither address receives the bitcoins the press alone should draw in some new faces.

What do you guys think?

Just wanted to point out to anyone interested, not sure if it's been mentioned in this thread already

If you're betting that Pirate will pay out, you can invest in https://glbse.com/asset/view/TYGRR.BOND-P

It is a bond worth 1BTC stake in BS&T.

Since Pirate has defaulted the bonds are not currently being bought back
(https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=82573.msg1120679#msg1120679)
and are priced around 0.6-0.7BTC

But if Pirate repays then the bond will return to 1 BTC.

Does anyone actually know Pirate's real life identity ? And is 100% sure, that's his actual real life identity ?

Wow - my mind boogles that a man not disclosing his identity and not telling what he does actually manages to amass a half million bitcoins.

That's actually enough to retire on in many parts of the world.

So, in the event he doesn't pay up. Who are you going to sue this time ?

Yes, he had a meetup at DefCon where he showed up in person. There was a post about it around here somewhere

Re: BULLISH SIGNAL ON BITCOIN PRICE

What pirate said is pretty much what every other ponzi says when it collapses: funds tied up, you'll get them as money comes in. I seriously doubt people will be getting their money back. Expect more excuses about having trouble getting it back out of assets later this week.

+1 Pirate is full of shit as many others have indicated already.

Edit: If he had all the investors' bitcoins, which he said himself he doesn't, he could pay everyone back now...or start right now as opposed to waiting until Monday. He is only delaying...watch...

If this were true, and it was a Ponzi, what reason would he have for no longer accepting deposits?

I'm not invested with him or trying to defend him, but what incentive would he have?  To delay suspicion?  Why would he need to do that?

Also, is anyone else wondering if the dump at $15 was him, and then he just bought back in at $11?  He could have made himself a hefty bitcoin profit doing that.

It's no news that the $30 spike was a bubble.  And this is a required paper written by a few econ students.  Am I missing something here?

EDIT:
It's not a peer-reviewed paper - it was a class assignment for an undergraduate course in economics. Glad they've done it, but it's pretty clumsy. Typical academic "publish or perish" stuff: I have to write a paper, so I'll write for the sake of writing, showing that I have been successfully indoctrinated by teachers into a particular way of thinking and parroting. The conclusions are stating the obvious and the trivial, but in a pompous, academic language.
+1.  You said it better

You know what...have it buyers. Buy up all the bitcoins while they are <$100.

That way you run out of cash to buy anymore and the price will fall back to a more "economic" value.

Have at it!  Cheesy

P.S. Price will still go below $7.50

Many landlords include electricity in the rent, and at some universities electricity is free, so some people may already have "free" energy.

Re: [POLL] when will the panic buying begin?
by
mooseman99
on 19/07/2012, 19:05:25 UTC
I got to thinking that not many people (myself included) actually realize how close we are to block reward halving.

The poll is when do you think people will wake up and realize bitcoins aren't going to be any easier to mine nor buy for that matter (at low prices)?

I don't get it.  When the block reward halves, doesn't the difficulty decrease as well? So it will be just as easy to get bitcoins?

If it is more difficult...do you think it will be more easy?

Think about it...
Doesn't the difficulty reflect the amount of computing power in use at the time?
So if the block reward is halved, mining is no longer profitable, so less people mine and computing power goes down until difficulty reaches about half of what it was, where people will then start mining again because it's profitable?
Perhaps this is not 50% of what it is now but I'd assume it's a significant decrease.

Not necessary. At the current price level, the miners can continue mining with a comfortable profit margin. That is without considering the prospect of bitcoin becoming a widely used mechanism for financial transactions. Since, the difficulty did not substantially decrease even when the prices was hovering around $2.00, it is very unlikely we will see any substantial decrease after the reward is halved. Whether it will go substantially up or not, that is still uncertain. My feeling is, with the availability of ASICs, difficulty will go up in the future.
You think that halving the reward will not impact the amount of people mining?

Re: Silk Road sale.... BTC explosion.
by
mooseman99
on 05/02/2012, 06:16:12 UTC
I believe I read somewhere that silkroad hedges to dollars when the buyer buys, and back to bitcoin when the buyer marks as delivered and they need to pay the seller.  If that's true, I'd expect slight downward pressure during the sale, and upward pressure over the coming weeks as people's deliveries arrive.
Wow that actually might make sense.  Considering how much was sold this weekend I'd say there was actually more of an impact then I thought, and if everyone gets their order and finalizes at the same time that could cause a shift.
