Re: Electricity Setup for Miners (240v)

I'm also interested in this. I have a few questions that I'd like to tack on.

I'm hoping to run two AntMiner S9s with either AWP5s or AWP3++s to power them. Along with figuring our what receptacle should be installed, I also want to know what amperage the line should be rated for. Do I need a dedicated circuit for each power supply?

Are there recommendations on which PSU to use?

Edit: I'm in Ontario, Canada, if that makes a difference.

Just watch it happen in the next few days....

annnnnnd....

POP!  Grin

That would be a pretty measly "bubble" by bitcoin standards. Based on past bubbles, we should top out in the $4000 to $5000 USD range.

I watched it jump $15 in a minute and a half and it's hitting 500 mark.

What do you think?  Shocked

This looks like the start of the next bull run to $5000.

Two words:  low volume.
Now that might change but until it does it doesn't show any conviction in the reversal.

This MtGox volume doesn't look low to me. It's significantly higher than it was during most of the run-up.

I guess I should add all the markets together to get a better picture.

edit: bitstamp and btce show a similar chart

I'm not making predictions about the price movement, but I don't understand how you decided the volume was low.

I increased my position at $850 on the way down. In hindsight, I could have gotten them cheaper, but any price you buy in at today will seem ridiculously cheap in 10 years.

I've said it before, but this quote seems applicable:

Cavirtex in Canada has been good for me. They had quite high fees for a while, which they brought back down a bit.

On the plus side, coins tend to go for cheaper on Cavirtex.

How Are People Implementing Their M-of-N (Fragmented) Backup Plan?
by

I'm going to switch to Armory and make a paper backup. I don't like the idea of someone who finds my paper backup being able to take all my coins, so I want to implement an m-of-n paper backup plan.

With a 2-of-3 scheme, I plan to store fragments

  • in a rented safety deposit box at the bank
  • with relatives in another city
  • hidden in my house

I could also put a fourth fragment in Google Drive with two-factor authentication, in a 2-of-4 scheme. This would protect me in the event that two fragments get lost. (Yes I know the NSA will be able to read my Google Drive, but they would also have to get another fragment somehow.)

Does anyone have any comments on these plans, or can anyone suggest something better?

Re: Exchanges drying up, effect?
by

Apart from a few 'whale buys' there's not much action / volume lately. The price rising on low volume is not a good indicator for continued rises.

If you are looking at the volume traded in terms of USD, the volume looks about as high as it was during the initial run-up from mid-January to March

Which is precisely why looking at volume in THAT way is foolish.

Could you explain more?

It seems to me that people only have so much USD to move around. If the price of bitcoin doubles and the amount of USD traded stays the same, I'd say the volume traded is constant.

Re: The Price Is Still on Track
by

Before anyone screams at me I'm just making a point.  I don't believe these graphs have much to do with the irrational exuberance behind the price.  This is simply to make a point about linear growth versus exponential.  Let's say that Bitcoin adoption continues at a linear pace as it has done for several years and the exponential is speculation.  Now here is a 6 month linear graph.  6 months, I didn't have to go back 3 years.  Cheesy

It doesn't make much sense for the price to rise linearly. It's just as "hard" for a price to go from $1 to $2 as it is for it to go from $1000 to $2000--it's the same amount of growth. If you invest $100 when the price goes from $1 to $2, or if you invest $100 when the price goes from $1000 to $2000, you end up both times with $200.

Straight lines on a log chart make perfect sense. Prices often follow exponential growth for extended periods of time.

The price has been sticking to the trend we started in January pretty well. If it continues, we should see $200 in May.

Not to put words in anyone's mouth, but I assume it's because the linear-scale chart looks scary.
