Why not just navigate to the wallet file and look at its date of creation? That could potentially give you an answer. Open Finder and navigate to ~/.electrum/wallets. Your wallet files should be in there. Find the one called default_wallet and see if it was created recently or back in 2014.

I navigated to the wallet but it just says created today (when I last opened it). Screenshot below if that helps:

On another note, is it weird that on opening Electrum I don't have to enter a password for the default_wallet to open either? It just automatically pops up upon opening Electrum.
However, if I want to open my test wallet I have to enter a password.

Thanks again for the help guys.

I think option B is most likely in your case, even if you remove a program, Electrum files stay in the default folder. When you install a new version of Electrum it is just open you old 2014 default wallet which is password protected. If you save seed from that wallet it is easy to bypass password problem by recovering wallet with seed (wallet will be password-free). I would reject the option A since you verify Electrum files.

Hmm, I'm starting to think you could be right. I've had this Mac for almost nine years now(!).

The weird thing is that not a single variation of my passwords are working. Can't imagine making it anything else.

Also, no... no backup of seed key. I have others but nothing for Electrum.

Damn. I'm starting to come to terms with the reality of saying bye bye to about $1000...

Thanks anyway.

Lol wow. Just came back to check on this thread to find I've been accused of lying and stealing the wallet. Nice to meet you too guys!

No, no, unfortunately, that is not the case.

Answers to questions above:
- Yes the computer is mine
- It's my bedroom computer which no one else has access to

Everything I have stated here is true. I'm normally quite experienced with computers and I have to admit, the scenario does sound strange – the password setup screen just... didn't appear. I went straight from install to a 'functioning' default wallet in about two clicks.
The alarming thing is I installed Electrum on my work computer today, clicked Next on default_wallet and the password/seed key setups screens DID come up.
I've spent the better part of two days trying to figure out what happened and can only come to three conclusions:

A. I've fallen victim to some kind of malware scam.
B. I briefly installed Electrum when playing around with Bitcoin back in 2014 and it's somehow defaulted to those setup details (although none of my regular passwords are working),
C. It's a bug (unlikely).

For the record, I'm running on a Mac (sorry, probably should have stated initially).

Not sure what else to do at this point.

I've attached a screenshot of the wallet/transaction details if that helps, let me know if anything else helps.

Any ideas would be much appreciated but I know it's a long shot.

Electrum - default_wallet asking for password I was never asked to create

Hi there,

I recently installed Electrum 3.3.8 from electrum.org and have verified the download.

  • No password or prompt came up when I activated the program, I was just given a "default" wallet.
  • No seed was given at any point.
  • I transferred bitcoin into it successfully.
  • Then I tried to send this bitcoin to a tor website but the system asked for a password. I have no password.
  • Never in the install process was I asked to create a password for this default_wallet or received a seed key. It just opened after I clicked next on the intro screen.
  • As a test, I created a new wallet which took me through the entire password creation/seed key process. I also have to enter a password for this wallet on opening Electrum but not for the default_wallet.
  • I've never used a desktop wallet before and am 99.9% sure I have never installed Electrum previously.

What do I do? Any help would be hugely appreciated.
