Best crypto Tax Software for Miners?
by
navigatrix
on 18/11/2019, 07:46:15 UTC
I'm struggling to complete my 2018 (yes, 2018!) tax return. I've filed my crypto income and Form 8949 since 2014. I used Libra Tax, which was simple and easy to use. Just pointed them to my Coinbase account and a couple of wallets where I keep the private key.
Well, Libra is defunct now. I've looked at some online options, like CryptoTrader.tax, Beartax, and a couple of others, but they are very focused on crypto traders. Not so much for miners getting (often) several pool payments in different wallets every day.

Sorting out thousands of transactions and converting them to the sites' proprietary format is taking forever. I wonder if anyone out there knows of a good site that can simplify this process.

Ideally (like Libra did) it should provide not only the cost-basis trading Form 8949, but also let you get a report on income by time-frame, like by year, YTD, by month and so on.

What have you found for a relatively easy way to get these reports for our good friend, the IRS?

Thanks.

Well that makes 3 of us...  Undecided

Two boards are hashing normally but one is showing only 7 xxx's and other is missing a few chips. I have similar error messages in the Kernel Log - mainly
 Dec 28 04:04:25 (none) local0.err cgminer[449]: Get [1]Temp Data Failed!

Hopefully someone will read this and provide some insight.

Re: Stay away from ASICSPACE
by

on 22/12/2016, 01:15:09 UTC
I think everyone who has had these problems with AsicSpace should get together.

I have 15 miners there. 1 S9 got 'toasty' and failed, per one of Robert's scarce text messages. I've tried to arrange to get it back so I can get it fixed or at least tinker with it myself, but no luck. It doesn't seem anyone is ever at the facility.

Four days ago all but one of my miners went strange. They mined intermittently, failing over to the last choice pool, with ridiculous rejection rates (As high as 80%). Now only 4 show up at all, with hash rates in the 200 GH range. Numerous texts have been ignored. Yesterday he texted me 'someone will be there Wednesday'. Well, it's Wednesday at 5 pm and there is no change. Here's BTC at $840 and the majority of my hashpower is out for the count. 70 TH/s is down to about 6 TH/s.

========================================
Update: It turns out that a switch failed, and it took 5 days to get a new one due to winter storms delaying shipment.
Seems to be a strong argument that they should keep spares in stock...

Also it doesn't explain why the customer service is so crappy. If they just said on Day 1 that they had a bad switch and needed to send for a new one it would have been a lot better.
I shouldn't have to badger them to find out what's going on. A proactive message to those affected would help a lot in building confidence in this business. Honestly I don't think they care.

Re: [WTS] Antminer S5 Bitcoin Miners (32)
by
navigatrix
on 18/06/2016, 09:03:09 UTC
I have 32 Antminer S5's for sale. All are in good working order. If you buy:

1 or 2: $110 each
3 to 5: $105 each
6 to 10: $100 each
11+:  $95 each
All of them: $3000 or best reasonable offer

These prices are without a PSU. I have a couple of EVGA 1300W Supernova G2 PSUs available for an extra $120.  One will operate 2 S5's. And one EVGA 1000W for $80.
These miners have been regularly cleaned and maintained and all are running without issues.

I also have 5 Antminer S3+ asking $40 each. Plus one more with a bricked controller -- free with a purchase.

I am situated in the NW USA. I can ship anywhere. US orders at cost, overseas orders cost + $10 to cover paperwork.

If you're local, you can pick up or I can deliver.

May be I'm wrong but it seems to me infeasible to buy S5. I mean after the halving (when these actually begin mining) with current difficulty level,  S5 produces 0.04 btc.  Electricity  costs 600 * 24 * 30 * 0.1 = 43$  (coolers and stuff use electricity too). Now it is up to bitcoin price to jump to 1100$  and difficulty to remain stable  (both being very unlikely) to have a balanced situation ...
I mean S5 is dead in regions with normal (around 10 cents) electricity fee.

Where I am they are still profitable after halvening, but I need the space.

Please make me an offer for some or all.

thanks

Re: Amperage of Antminer S7 (240)
by
navigatrix
on 18/06/2016, 08:52:56 UTC
Hi there guys I just converted my farm to 240. I was wondering what the amp draw of 1 Antminer s7 is on 240 volts!!
It is a 50 amp circuit. The breaker keeps flipping with 1 antminer s7 and 7 antminer s5 with the power factor a 1. The amperage for an antminer s5 is 3 amps and antminer s7 is 7 amps. So 28 amps on a 50 am circuit no problem but it does not work. It will run for 1 hour and then trip. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
AntMiner S5: 590 watts
AntMiner S7: 1,422 watts

Assuming a power supply efficiency of 80%, the S5 would consume 708 watts from the wall, the S7 would consume 1,707 watts.

The total for 7 S5 units and 1 S7 unit would be 6,663 watts. On a 240 volt circuit, this would be 28 amps of current.

A 50 amp circuit should be sufficient to power this with a wide margin, so I would suggest verifying there aren't any additional loads like a hot water heater, range, or clothes dryer on the same circuit. Also, the minimum wire size should be 6 AWG from that breaker, any smaller could cause issues.

If it is an old circuit breaker, that could be part of the issue as well.

Also, purchasing a clamp ammeter would be an easy way to check at the circuit breaker the current draw. Here's the one I use: http://www.harborfreight.com/digital-clamp-meter-96308.html
Hey thanks for the link. I've been looking for a clamp ammeter that wouldn't break the bank.
I found GFI circuits suck for mining. I'm not enough of an expert to know why, but I experienced one smoking a lot and the other just tripping all the time. Sorta like some people I know  Grin Shocked.

Re: BFL Monarch issue
by
navigatrix
on 18/06/2016, 08:47:16 UTC
Hi. Keep us posted. I have a Monarch that started switching off the PSU -- I have no idea why.

By the way, leaking from the little impeller pumps on the head sinks is common. Both my Monarchs started doing that within 3 weeks of receiving them. On was really subtle and the miner overheated before I noticed it was leaking. There are multiple reasons for this the main one being that BFL used a super-cheap cooling solution. If the system gets even slightly too warm the pump body deforms and the skinny o-ring that seals it ceases to function. You can make it last longer by swapping with a larger-diameter o-ring, but that is a temporary solution. Also the pump controller, if you should remove it, is virtually impossible to re-seat due to the super-skinny wire that completes the circuit.

What I ended up doing on the one that leaked and didn't overheat, was to disassemble the impeller pumps cooling the chips. I threw out the impeller and replaced the skinny o-ring. I resealed the pumps, which are now just passive chambers for the water to flow through.

Then I got a cheap Syscooling pump (similar to the Antminer C1 contraption) and connected it between the two ex-pumps and the radiator. Voila! No leaks. Avg 3 deg C lower temps than the stock cooling solution.

The hose barbs are likely to be different diameters so plan for some way to reduce one end. However I found that jamming a cold 5/16" poly hose into a warm 3/8" poly hose creates a perfect seal. You can't pull it apart once the temps equalize. But I put clamps on just to be sure. Grin

Re: Questions about outdoor bitcoin mining
by

I want to build an outside bitcoin mining box that will have a roof and vents for Antminer s7, but will condensation be a problem? what about in the winter will it be too cold for it? I live in Canada. In the summer would it be too hot? Rain won't be the issue I will come up with a pretty good box design. What if it shuts down for what ever reason will it be okay?
Hi. I don't see any reason you can't run something that has fresh airflow from outside but just leaving the miners without cover would be a bad idea. You don't want them to suck in  actual water. I'm in the Pacific Northwest and I've been running miners for 2 years in my 'garden shed'. I took out the wall on the exhaust side and put in screen. I leave the door slightly open and the space under the rake edge of the roof as well. It's in a sheltered placed so the wind can't blow in rain and snow.

If I were to build a minimal BTC-Hivetm it would be: roof-line->1 ft -> screen -> 2 ft -> intake of rack or shelf with miners -> exhaust of miners -> 1 ft -> screen -> 1 ft -> roof line.

I.e. you could put about 24 miners in a 6 ft x 6 ft (2m x 2m) configuration.

But I would certainly make sure the roof of whatever miner-house you build extends past each wall by at least a foot. If it's in the wind, then 2 ft on the prevailing wind side at least.

Anyone want to help me figure out how to sign a message?  Maybe I'm dumb, but I've spent an hour trying to figure this out on my blockchain wallet and can't.  I've read this:  https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/18qy88/bitcoin_message_signing_and_verification/ without figuring it out.
I've found this:  https://support.blockchain.com/hc/en-us/articles/210353833 which states:

"What is message signing, and how can I do that?

Message signing is a way you can prove you control a particular address, and demonstrate you have ownership of the funds.

This feature is currently only available for your Imported Addresses, but will be implemented for all addresses in the future. To sign a message, go to Manage Addresses to the right of Imported Addresses. Choose which address you want to sign, and click More Options -> Sign Message.

A small window will display allowing you to provide a unique message or signature that identifies you as the owner."

Now I didn't import an address for the transaction, so maybe that's why I'm not getting it?

Coinbase doesn't even let you do this. I chatted with them and it's not even possible since they mix the transaction before sending it out. Their recommendation was to 'transfer the funds to a wallet you control' first. AAAAaaaargh!

But with a lot of PMs, begging, links to the trx and screen shots, sidehack decided to trust me.

So if you're thinking about this and your spendable btc are in Coinbase, move them to a 'real' wallet

Re: Is BITMAIN a trusted source for purchasing mining equipment?
by
navigatrix
on 13/06/2016, 19:28:25 UTC
Buy Directly from bitmain IMO, warranty can become an issue if you get it from someone else.

I have bought 4 S1's and 2 S3's from them , all worked great, no issues.  S1 is still hashing (more so to prove out how much of a beast it is ) about 2 years it's been going.
It depends if you want faster shipping or not. Sometimes I will buy from websites like eBay because they ship from the US, not China, and I'm willing to take the extra cost for saving time. Warranty has never been an issue for me even buying from eBay or Amazon. The only bad thing is, people resell for a higher cost there, and if you're willing to buy it for more, but have a smaller ship time, this is for you.

Bitmain's trustworthy enough that you can safely buy from them, unlike BFL which ended up not sending it's miners at all for many people. For now, it is safe, but watch out , because as Bitmain becomes more of a monopoly this could change.

Shipping time from Bitmain in China is about as fast as anyone in the US. My new S9 shipped later Sunday and it's expected tomorrow. Occasionally it will get held up in customs for a couple of days, but I only had that problem when I bought 35 S5's all at once and the customs folks didn't know what they were.
When I buy 1 or 2 units it takes about 48 hours (West coast).

This sounds strangely similar, I had a this problem a year or two ago, Turned out the person, moved the miners to point to their pool and claimed it was someone else kicking up a stink with power usage and had them cut off.

I'm not saying you have the same problem, but just be sure you know who your dealing with, I was double crossed, but they paid in the end.

my advice, move the equipment FAST! even if this is real, dont be caught up in other peoples disputes.

Nah, it's nothing like that. I have been visiting and maintaining the miners twice a month, otherwise monitoring thru VPN. My 'landlord' is a father-son operation, electronics engineer and network wiz. Really good people and we're good friends. Problem is the other party. I won't get into the details here but 'fraud' is a word being kicked around.
To stay viable I need the same deal, which will be hard to find, unless I buy my own real estate -- tough to do when your income is your bitcoin mine.

Seeking Legal Advice on business dispute affecting my mining operation
by
navigatrix
on 13/06/2016, 00:11:11 UTC
Short story: I rented space from a person and got a really good deal, as he has use for the waste heat for my miners, etc. We signed a rental contract and all has gone well until May 5th. This person is not the problem - in fact we had been talking expansion and partnering for some hardware development and possibly hosting offerings.

The problem is that he is now in a dispute with another party over the title to the land his workshop (and my bitcoin miners) sits on. The other party called up the local utility company and shut off our power. My miners have been down for 38 days now.

I may have found an alternate location but configuring it, moving, etc. will take more time and money. I'd like to get a court order (if possible) to turn the power back on and allow my miners to operate there until their feud is settled (or a year, whichever is longest). I don't know if that's even possible, but it needs to happen last month.

This mining op is my livelihood. If you can help (not necessarily pro bono but at a good rate) please PM me. I'm in the Pacific Northwest.

71C is a little high i think! isn't it?

Should be ok, my 3x S7-F1 run at 73'c ( ambient 35'c 3pm local time) for 2 months already, so far so good

Keep in mind it is during summer during all of this.  So for me I personally use decent fan's with high CFM's and push the air away from miners in my mining area. I'm not in a area evaporation cooling is effective.  So during a pretty hot day I'm happy with it and no damage from it.

At night it is already in low 60's and will get lower chances are later.   Mining during summer for many like me means mining a little hotter.   But the S7-F1 handles it fine so far.

I have 2 x S7-F1s and 2 x S7-B18s running in the same location under the same conditions. Last week when it hit 90F here, the S7-F1's actually ran about 8-10C cooler.
The Batch 18's pushed 75 - 77C but the the Single Fan versions stayed under 70C. I actually like them better.

We bought 900 antMiner S7 from them without any problems. Except maybe customs asking WTF.

Wow. 900.
I got customs hassles with just 35 S5's last year. Roll Eyes

I can say my experience with Bitmain has been 99% good since my first S3+ purchases.

The 1% is a set of S7 boards I sent for repair that apparently were lost. I shipped EMS and tracking says 'delivered'. But Bitmain can't find them.

As for price, you can choose to mine or not, based on price. If you choose not to, and so do others, the price will drop. It's sad that only Bitmain seems to care about selling to smaller miners but I'm glad they do.

I have been using the Libra Tax site to manage my mining calculations for IRS tax purposes. You can link it to Coinbase or any other wallets you use.
The “Tax Report" will fulfill your reporting requirements for IRS Form 8949 and Schedule D. http://www.libra.tech/

I've used them 2 years now.
That being said, I'm expecting a refund for 2015 year and it's still 'processing'. I'm half expecting an audit.

Thanks for this review and including how you purchased it

Your welcome I enjoy doing them.  It was new for me on the purchasing from Bitmain Warranty and I have nothing but good things to say.  The shipping out of US and fast shipping is great.  And I really liked that you get a number to call for warranty vs standard.

I am still running so far up to 5 day's and no issues.  I plan to upload pictures again after a week or so on status.

Thanks for this. I also bought 2 of these and they have been running about 11 days. They've been absolutely worry-free, even though it hit 82 deg F a few days ago. One is slightly under the advertised speed and one is slightly over, so I guess they average out.

How do you get stuff shipped from Bitmain Warranty as opposed to using the website and getting them from China?

Hi..guys
I am a btc miner for almost a year. I think it is impossible to get 1 BTC a month. I want to know wheter is there anyone who goal to get 1 BTC a month. Thanks for your response.
 Roll Eyes Roll Eyes
I think it is very hard to earn 1BTC/month by mining but it is not impossible. By buying 3to4 latest mining rigs we can earn more. Or join ckpool maybe one day you get lucky and hit a block to earn 25BTC reward.

You missed the poll though he say's "without referral" and "without investment".   It's easy to overlook it at the top, but it's hard to get 5 grand a year with no investment... just is not "free" money.

No risk, no reward. There is always some investment, even if it's your time or effort (even posting on this forum  Wink )
Referrals, IMO, just bring in dust.

My guess for the S9 would be somewhere along 10 TH/s and it's price somewhere in $1200 to $1400 region. It will be the most efficient one so a power consumption of 1000W could be their target for this.
The looks of it could be like an S4 body type and the noise would be the most among all the antminer versions.

Or maybe they'll have a couple of options, like a water-cooled system similar to the C1 (I loved that C1. So sad it's sitting on a shelf doing nothing. *sniff*). Or an immersion kit.
