Awesome campaign, I've been happy to post everyday for this. Thank you for your awesome job, I would like to see more campaigns like this one. You did a really great filter job, which is a good thing for people who are doing much efforts for posting better quality stuff.

I really like this kind of campaign without hiden terms (like KYC asked at the end). Thank you again.

Re: CNBC: Be “prepared to lose everything” in Cryptos
by
oddwh
on 27/02/2018, 06:11:04 UTC
This can ben seen like an advice, so I don't see as wrong. We can lose all our investment in cryptocurrencies, and it doesn't require to see a bitcoin reaching 0 for that  Tongue

Investing in cryptos is a risky game that some people sometimes forget. Everyone must consider investing only what they can afford to lose, this is said everywhere on this forum but it's still the best advice, because yes, you can invest in something which will worth near 0 later.

About the graph showing price volatibility in the news, well, this is not surprising to see cryptocurrencies with an higher rate, haha. What do they expect ? Thet compare gold and cryptocurrencies, but this is not comparable. More the market cap is high, the less volatility will be, because with an higher market cap, you'll need much more money to shake the market. But this doesn't protect you against crashes.

Re: Bitcoin must come back to its original use - currency !
by
oddwh
on 27/02/2018, 05:35:33 UTC
One of BTC's strength, which is its deflationary nature, is also one of its greatest weaknesses. Like gold, its most valued utility is as an investment and a store of value if one was willing to take the volatility. But theres only one way BTC is going. Up.

With that said, tell me, are you willing to spend your coins for your daily needs? Then prove it. Because I dont. The opportunity cost is too great.

Yes, and deflationary coins goes against our consuming society, where we have to spend our money which loses value. As we all want to keep our coins, having bitcoins as global currency would kill the consuming society, haha.

Currently, everyone sees bitcoin as a deflationary currency, which is wrong as mining creates inflation (around 1440 coins everydays, 525 600 every years which gives an inflation rate of 3.1% for this year). When inflation was higher in 2014, we were thinking it was one reason of a price drop.

For bitcoin, the protocol must evolve to use it back as currency. If everyone starts to use their coins, fees will rise again, maybe even more than december, so all daily purchases will be almost impossible. It was possible some years ago, when we had really less users, and I remember our motivation back in these years was to see bitcoin accepted by big merchands (like steam, microsoft, amazon, paypal integration? ). I don't see a lot of people hoping for another great merchant integration today, currently, people are talking about countries regulation and trading. Seems like bitcoin usage and goal has changed, indeed.

Re: What is the difference between an ICO and an altcoin?
by
oddwh
on 26/02/2018, 17:24:33 UTC
An ICO is just the act of pre-selling a new altcoin, before it reaches exchanges. This is a bit like crowfunding, this helps new companies here to get some revenues for marketing, paying employees, offices, taxes... Generally, buying during an ICO is more risky so the price per coin is lower than after it reaches an exchange (even if it's sometimes not true).

Not all altcoins are created from an ICO, this was mostly the 2017 trend. And even, not all coins from an altcoin issued from an ICO are dedicaced for the ICO, as you have bounties, parts given to the team or helpers which aren't sold during an ICO.

Re: Do you join ICOs that requires KYC?
by
oddwh
on 26/02/2018, 06:27:36 UTC
Companies need KYC to cash out the amount collected during ICO. This is needed to justify from where the funds come from. Without that, they cannot legaly pay their employees and taxes. Requiring KYC in an ICO is justified.

This is not because i'm against that, but I don't want to share my personal information with a new company, so I decided to avoid ICO that require KYC. If I really want to buy some coins, I just have to wait later, when it reaches exchanges. Of course, there is a risk to miss the train, but my personal informations worth more than that in my opinion.

Re: Trading is gambling after all
by
oddwh
on 26/02/2018, 06:04:54 UTC
For most of us, it's gambling indeed. This is not different than buying a lottery ticket, if you don't know how to analyze charts and understand the market.

95% of "trader" will lose money, when only 5% will win. Of course, these 5% have more knowledge than the rest. And it's easy to lose, generally, in the first trades, we win. But once we start to lose, we make mistakes to try to recover, so we are less patient, or taking more risks. When I discovered bitcoin, I tried to trade, and of course, I almost lost all what I had  Cheesy

Thanksfully, I didn't invested so much at this time.

If you want to stop gambling, go to a trading school and learn the basics. If you can't reconsider the question, you trade without knowledge, this will turn against you, for sure. So in this case, don't play all your stack on trading, just a small part. At least, you'll be smart and don't lose everything.

Mining cryptocurrencies in smartphones can be done since years, but it has never been really developped, mostly because of devices prices and low performances. I've been always worried about this kind of mining, because mining on a mobile device can be dangerous with the lithium battery which is stressed by heat and abusive plugging time.
We all know what happens to a defective lithium battery : burning or explosion.

I wouldn't try if I would like to keep my device alive a long time

Re: Five reasons 2018 could be the best year yet for cryptocurrencies.
by
oddwh
on 24/02/2018, 20:59:59 UTC
1. The work on scaling issues
2. Large scale and more legitimate ICOs
3. Regulation
4. A lot of execution and usability
5. Institutional investors

I don't find 3. Regulation and 5. Institutional investors for good at all.

Also, market will grow a lot slower now. I think the best year so far was 2017 and the next better year will be '19-20, but not '18.

That's funny, I've always seen that newcomers sees regulation as a good news when earlies sees that as a bad news. I don't really understand why, maybe mindsets have changed and new users doesn't search the same purpose behind bitcoin and cryptocurrencies.

2018 began mostly badly, even if the price comes back to 20k, I dont think this will be an amazing year as 2017. Let's hope it will just be a good consolidation year Smiley

Re: How is it possible to hack someone's account?
by
oddwh
on 24/02/2018, 20:44:34 UTC
As others people said, I follow the possibiliy of a web browser failure.

Do you know that is possible to create offline transactions with MEW ?

https://myetherwallet.github.io/knowledge-base/offline/making-offline-transaction-on-myetherwallet.html

This could help you in the future to be protected against web browser attacks.

In my situation, I have an offline computer (this computer is NEVER connected to the network), I have the website in local storage and I follow the steps as described on the link.

This is quite impossible to hack you, as your private key is used on the offline computer, and if you use a dedicaced usd key for transfering the transaction information, and if you format it every times you use it, I think it becomes really hard to hack you  Smiley

I take care to delete the partition on the USB drive before every time I plug it again on the offline computer, to avoid possible viruses transferts.

Anyway, you could use an hardware wallet, but you still have this possibility if you don't want to  Tongue

Re: Important ICO lesson: Cash out your initial investment
by
oddwh
on 23/02/2018, 20:47:00 UTC
My strategy about ico is the same than with all my investments : I cash out my initial investment when the price reaches 3x my buy price. Sometimes, this never happens, but whatever, if you invest only what you can afford to lose (yeah, that works with cryptocurrencies investments made from BTC too), I still can invest somewere else in parallel with the leftover I own.

3x price isn't that hard for good projects, in this situation, I get back my investment and I still own 2/3 of my coins, which is still a good amount for the future  Smiley

Re: [ÐTH] Dether - Signature campaign
by
oddwh
on 23/02/2018, 06:08:27 UTC
Just to be clear because some people think they can just post anything and earn money. Only quality posts will get you rewarded. Posts about other bounties or other non-interesting posts like that will not make you earn any stakes.

And complaining about it will not change anything to that since it was written in the first post.

Being able to join a signature campaign is a privilege, not a right.

Where did you mention these statements before? Bitcoin talk forum moderators itself removing are banning scam posts. The signature campaign is for spread and promoting  the web link. Asking quality in posts??? it is not content writing....very bad....

In the first post you should have read ? Bitcointalk moderators can't remove all useless and bad posts because it's way too much and it's also why we now have the merit system. Because of signature campaign spammers.

Dether should be promoted through genuine users that have something interesting or constructive to bring to this forum and/or the community, not spammers. And that's for two reasons:
- To preserve Dether's image and not associate it with spammers and shitposters that are messing up with this forum.
- To not contribute to the 'pollution' of the forum.

As someone else said, there is a lot of people that i didn't accept because their post quality was really bad or for other reasons such as using multiple accounts. As i said before:

Being able to join a signature campaign is a privilege, not a right.

If you don't like the rules, feel free to leave.

Can you quote any one of useless posts or scam posts posted by me? or can you prove me i have multiple accounts?

Most of your posts are on bounties parts of the forum, and most of these are twitters/facebook links related to others bounties campain. Bounties posts aren't considered as constructive posts on this campain, this is why you don't get your reward. We are friday, so you still can get a stake for this week  Smiley

Re: KYC scams
by
oddwh
on 23/02/2018, 05:57:45 UTC
This is not surprising to see this kind of scam coming.

Easy way : you create a token, and you airdrop it. An airdrop shouldn't need KYC, but whatever, some people will fall in the trap. The community is large enough to get hundreds of IDs by this way. Anyway you distribute your airdrop, and you sell these id on the darknet. That's done. People are happy as they got their token and they don't even know their IDs have been stolen.

I think there should be a pinned thread on the altcoin section to inform newcommers about this kind of scam

Yeah I've been surprised by the bitcoincash fork. In my opinion, I was convinced that once the fork would happen, the BTC would crash proportionnaly to the bitcoin cash value. This didn't happened so it's like people have welcomed bitcoin cash as a new independant currency.

In fact I was thinking this would have the same results than airdrops for the BTC price, creating inflation.

Nothing new, but trees doesn't reach the sky. The rise must stop one day as this happened in december.

These negatives news were a good reason for this drop, but this could have happened even without news. These news were here just to increase a bit more the drop factor.

on 21/02/2018, 05:33:10 UTC
Why not burning remaining coins ? This would be more fair for long time believers and nobody would be scared about distribution anymore  Tongue

You still have a lot to distribute, this will take a long time by your new method... I understand people here are sad about the distribution, but this wasn't the solution too, the coin crashed under 0.02 BTC because of inflation created by the distribution and we were hoping this would stop some months ago.

I was wondering, without checking news this morning : "wow, Byteball is dumping, even if altcoins are on the bad way, seems like there is something wrong, I should check the thread "
