origin of transfer
by
pancake
on 06/09/2012, 08:03:45 UTC
I wonder why the official client (and I don't know if there's any other alternative out there that can do that) can't show the origin address of a transfer.

I supose there are some technical reasons behind, but trying to explain bitcoin to other people resulted in a bit awkward when discovering this missfeature. Knowing who send you money is such a basic feature on a payment system.

You end up depending on blockchaininfo and other similar sites to check the txids to know which address sent you the money.

The addressbook only works for sending money. The client does not identifys any transfer to you from any of those addresses.

I supose this is a known topic, but I would like to know if there is some work on it, and how can I achieve this without depending on 3rd party sites or internet access.

Thanks.

Gracias!

Invertir bitcoins
by
pancake
on 29/08/2012, 16:02:15 UTC

Espero vuestros comentarios Smiley

Re: Mi charla sobre bitcoin (ud4kamp)
by

Thanks for the feedback. My apologies for the mistakes O:)

I'm still a newbye here and I had little time to prepare the slides (the day before), so I put some wrong information on it Sad

I have re-uploaded the pdf with the fixes reported in this thread. Check it out and let me know if it's fine now.

http://lolcathost.org/b/bitcoin-talk.pdf

About the solved block per hashing power dilemma.. I've removed that statement as long as it's something that will change on time, and by checking the blockchain.info charts I verified that a block is solved every 10m or so.. and the total reported hashing power in the network is now about 16.000 GH/s.

I'm not sure if solving a block scales in a linear form with the hashing power or if it's logaritmic/exponential. Afaik if you don't have a lot of hashing power it is non profitable to mine alone. Am I right?

Sorry I stopped reading on the intro slide: "uses RSA crypto" ?
You meant ECDSA crypto, right ?

Oops. epic fail Sad

Thanks for spotting that. I will upload the new slides and the source code of them asap.

A 800MH/s solves a block every 2 days or so.
How old is this slide?

That's based on my experience few months ago testing different pools. This may change along time and it's probably not exact. But maybe you can provide a better aproximation to this value.

Maybe we can assume time between solved blocks / network power as a proper proportion to know how many time it takes to solve a block having X hashing power.

Needs a bit more organization and simplification. More examples too.

Where did you give the talk?

I did the talk at ud4kamp. a hacker meeting in Euskadi. http://udakamp.hackinbadakigu.net/

I will do another talk in Barcelona the 15th of September, but I'll redo the slides because there will be fewer time there.

Mi charla sobre bitcoin (ud4kamp)
by

on 17/08/2012, 08:20:00 UTC

Espero vuestros comentarios Smiley

Javascript code to check if an address is valid
by
pancake
on 24/05/2012, 07:00:50 UTC
Hi forummers!

Recently I felt the need to check if a bitcoin address is valid or not. By googling I can find some implementations in php, java and c++.. but i want it for the browser, to notify the user that he pasted an incorrect address.

Do you know if anyone already did it?

Thanks
