Re: Is my bitcoin wallet address traceable back to me?

even using tor here are three ways to track you

Ok thanks, but I am not talking about 1, 2, or 3, in your scenarios.

I am exclusively talking about tracing out an identity just through the Bitcoin payment itself.

How difficult is it, say, for a regular person or privet investigator (NOT the fbi) to trace out the identity of a person using bitcoin to pay for something?

It seems there is some confusion here about my question let me try to be more clear.

If I use the Tor browser or serf of some coffee shops free wifi or whatever so the IP is not at all traceable back to me and make a payment to someone that has no idea who I am, and I do not give any personal information at all, and I make the payment using bitcoin, is there any way to trace out my legal identity only using the information from the bitcoin payment?

The best way to protect your privacy is to do business under a pseudonym.  That way, your bitcoin address is tied to your pseudonym (which can gain reputation, just as in the "real" world), but your pseudonym is not tied to your real identity.

How to do that because as far as I know there is no walets I can use at this time that one can get under a pseudonym. I mean all the services like for example Mt.Gox or Blockchain, or whatever it may be, require every one that signs up for their services to use their legal name and also show legal documentation proving the name your using to hold the account with them is your actual traceable legal name.

So I do not see how one can use a pseudonym. Did I misunderstand you or something Huh

There are techniques to obtain =an even greater level of privacy (e.g., shared send from Blockchain.info/wallet, or mixing service).

Is shared send from Blockchain totally untraceable to anyones personal identity?

What are you talking about when you say "or mixing service" ?

Thanks

I am just now learning about and using bitcoin. So my question is, if I want to publicly display my bitcoin wallet adress somewhere to receive monies (BTC) is there any way for that wallet address to be traceable back to me and they can find out who is the owner of that BTC wallet address?

Ok, Just did business with sublime5447 and it went as smooth as it could go! The BTC hit my account within an hour of sending him the funds maybe less (I was doing so many things at the time that I lost track of time it may have been 15 mins. but to be safe I will say withn the hour).

Just wanted to give a very positive review for him here incase others are interested in also doing business with him.

And he was really nice and patient with me too because I am totally a newbee to this stuff and did not understand most of the things he said. lol... But he was nice and took the time to try to explain everything to me.

five stars! Grin

Buying procedure...

 1. Like my facebook page bitcoin friends on facebook from your personal page

2. Send me an email from the email associated with your paypal account

3. send me a payment you can send as a gift if you like

4. Give me a min or two to check over your information.   Then I will send you some coin. yay!

So why the steps? that is how I verify your account
So why the limits? Because even though I verify your account you can can still screw me so we have to build trust

Step one complete.

Problem with step # 2: What is your email?

I have 4 BTC already in escrow with Mod. However my rates are Rs 27,019.00 INR (for all 4)

Calculated as below
((113.38 * 4 btc ) + 10%) * Rs 54.16 INR (taken from xe.com) = Rs 27,019.00 INR

Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks,

Sorry I am new here, who or what is Mod (you say "already in escrow with Mod")

how will someone pay you?

I am in Vrindavan Mathura India now. Where are you? I could meet you maybe and just give you cash.

Why do you say Mt.Gox charges $10?  I wish they had a flat trade fee for larger orders, but they actually charge a flat % of the total value of the order.

That is what they state on their website. They say to do a wire transfer their bank charges 1000 yen. thats about $10. Also on top of that there is a 3.99% charge.

First you're in the US, then you're in India and you don't want to make the transfer to Gox because it costs $10?  You just started using bitcoin but you already have someone you need to pay in Bitcoin?  Either I'm missing something or something is not right with this picture.   Huh

I am from/live in USA. As I said, I am now traveling in India.

Yes I want to pay for something with bitcoin. And yes I am new to using bitcoin.

I do not think that that is so difficult to understand.

Escrow is when a "middle man" (a reputable, trusted third party) is used to a conduct a transaction between a buyer and seller.  In your case, since you are looking to buy BTC, after reaching an agreement with a seller, the seller would send the BTC to the escrow agent.  The escrow agent would notify you that he has recieved the BTC and you would then send your payment to the escrow agent.  Once the escrow agent has recieved your payment, it would be forwarded to the seller and the BTC would be sent to you.

Ok thanks I am googling about it now.

But in the case of BTC who would the escrow agent be?

Is there some online website or do we both have to choose a person we Both feel will not run off with both our moneys or what?

Your first step is to figure out where you're at.

I am in India, but the point is I need to do some type of bank transfer or something online so in that case it seems irrelevant where I am at because I need to do everything online.

Yes bit instant is cool and all but there are 2 problems:

The first one is they charge a steep fee (3.99%) am I not understanding something?

The second is I am now abroad traveling out of the country currently and so can not just go to Walmart or whatever and make a cash deposit.

Any one can tell me the fastest and cheapest way to buy bitcoin immediately?

It seems that Mt.Gox charges $10 to buy bitcoin from them.
I am in the USA and so need to do a bank transfer from my bank to theirs but their bank charges a 1,000 Yen receiving fee (about $10 USD).

I already signed up with Dwolla too, and started the transfer of funds to my Dwolla account, but the funds will not be there till the 14th of this month at the earliest. and I need to pay a bill with bitcoin before that.

Some time ago I signed up with coinbase and got verified and tried to just buy half a Bitcoin with them but they canceled my transaction. saying:

"Unfortunately, we have decided to cancel this order because it appears to be high risk. We do not send out any bitcoins on high risk transactions, and your bank account will not be charged."  Tongue

I am new to Bitcoin and just started to use it and now I am in a bind because I need some bitcoin ASAP!

Anyone have any tips of how to get some Bitcoin by this Monday the 13th?

Thanks!
