I agree that big criminal organizations deal in more refined ways then BTC, but it's harder to track the little guys. You can track and map the dealings with HSBC, but with bitcoin, you could also map those who are lower in the food-chain. The more information you have, the better it is to plan your strategies.
Anyway, it's just a theory, but it makes sense to me.

I have also thought that maybe bitcoin was originally created to track and map a part of the black market. When cash is actually hard to track, then create a digital currency that is "safe and untraceable" for all kinds of illegal activities. Honeypots like these wouldn't be created to actually convict criminals, but to map their activity so you can create strategies according to that information. Same thing could be used to fund certain things that's funding needs to be more under the radar.
I don't know if "The Man" created bitcoin, but I know that they surely would have good use for it.

There seems to be a lot of concern by some over the anticipated potential auction by the FBI of seized Bitcoins from the Silk Road.

On some level doesn't the potential auction actually validate Bitcoins as a valuable asset that the Federal authorities seem relatively certain to have some reasonable future as a legal way of transferring value?

If the FBI had seized a warehouse full of worthless balls of lint...there wouldn't be any discussion of trying to auction them off...nor would that be the case if they were illegal drugs or weapons. It seems to me that their action in many ways validates that they believe whoever buys these are going to be purchasing at the very least a "commodity" of some degree of lasting value that the government anticipate they will ultimately be able to tax etc.

I do understand the concerns about potential market disruption (and there may be some degree of that albeit I would imagine briefly)...but even there I think there will be some sensitivity as to how this is done so as to maximize return for FBI (and the commissions of the potential auction house that will handle the deal)...not to mention a desire of the FBI to avoid headlines reading that the FBI has pocketed millions from sales to US citizens of a next day worthless commodity.

In the long run it seems to me that the ultimate auction of these coins will lead to a lot of press that will be positive validation for Bitcoins ....*snip..

The admins said they mine the 3 most profitable coins, this could mean a few different coins; not sure if they mean coins such as DOGE/LEAF, but it could also be GLC, GLD, FST, FRK, etc (that's my guess)

I'm also guessing you buy with BTC because it's "universal".
You get paid in BTC...if you decide to re-buy more KHS, it'd be weird if they paid you in those coins.
They mine the coins, trade them on market, and pay out in BTC.
If you paid in the same coins that they're mining...it's more hassle for them to receive the coins, then trade them, then pay out...does that make sense?
