Re: Pasting untrusted blocks/ and chainstate/ to new pruned node safe?
by
srinikethan
on 20/02/2016, 16:59:51 UTC
Actual result:
Core trusts index and chainstate blindly

Expected results:
Core loads the pruned index and chainstate
Core catches up
Core compares the utxo - hash with other network nodes
If some other node has different database hash the node will fail to start
EDIT: or ban the liar node

Alternative expected result:
Core loads the pruned index and chainstate
Core catches up
User is notified to add configuration option that the user is aware the chain might be untrusted
The value of the option could be dependent on some kind of hash derived from latest block or machine specific random uuid
This will prevent user to download the configuration file from untrusted source because attacker cannot predict this value

Re: What is the Future of Bitcoin ?
by

on 20/02/2016, 16:54:14 UTC
Some people buy bitcoins as an investment, hoping they’ll increase in value. There are many online marketplaces that allow people to buy and sell bitcoins using different currencies. Coinbase, in San Francisco, runs the world’s largest bitcoin exchange, and operates 2.8 million bitcoin wallets globally, according to Wired. You can also buy and sell bitcoins on Bitquick, Xapo, and CoinCorner, among other exchanges.

Re: Why do you have Bitcoin?
by

on 20/02/2016, 16:50:52 UTC
Sometimes, we don’t want people knowing what we have purchased. Bitcoin is a relatively private currency. On the one hand, it is transparent – thanks to the blockchain, everyone knows how much a particular bitcoin address holds in transactions. They know where those transactions came from, and where they’re sent. On the other hand, unlike conventional bank accounts, no one knows who holds a particular bitcoin address. It’s like having a clear plastic wallet with no visible owner. Everyone can look inside it, but no one knows whose it is. However, it’s worth pointing out that people who use bitcoin unwisely (such as always using the same bitcoin address, or combining coins from multiple addresses into a single address) risk making it easier to identify them online.

Re: What does the b standard for in "b-money"?
by

B-money was an early proposal created by Wei Dai for an "anonymous, distributed electronic cash system". Satoshi Nakamoto referenced b-money when creating Bitcoin. In his essay, published on the cypherpunks mailing-list in November 1998, Dai proposed two protocols. The first protocol is impractical as it requires a broadcast channel that is unjammable as well being synchronous.so basically its stands for bitcoins

Re: What's your biggest problem with Bitcoin
by

Most people I know, want to invest in Bitcoins, hoping the price against say the USD appreciates significantly and they can make a profit from it.
They have no inkling on how to buy Bitcoins (despite how easy exchanges are making it to buy).

Re: Methods of growing your Bitcoin?

To help BTC traders with their margin trading without a large commercial entity, regular Bitcoin users can now double as a lender.

Unlike lending on a peer-to-peer service, both borrower and lender will not know the other party’s identity.

And as a lender, you may offer BTC at an interest rate and maximum period of lending you specify, to be used by a margin trader. Borrowers may or may not take you up for it.

Re: What is your plan to get rich with Bitcoin?
by

In theory, with enough Bitcoin transactions, there's money to be made from clearing transactions through the blockchain. That's where all the investment that I'm seeing is going. As a side effect of that, you wind up with mining capacity, but you never make money from it.
