Ok airdrop is cancelled. First things first:

When the dumping began back in the summer, a lot of people screamed to stop the airdrop, allocate it entirely to the dev and marketing fund or even burn the airdrop funds, now that it stops people are crying.

It's not the way THAT airdrops stopped, it's the way HOW they stopped.
Sure they didn't bring enough new users, no doubt about that, but this airdrop was announced for a long time. Tony should swallow the bitter pill, do this airdrop and cancel the airdrop distribution AFTER this one.
The way it was performed seems a little like a I-do-what-I-want-thing from Tony. I know he could do it, it is his coin, but that could yield to many people who may turn their back to Byteball.

Okay. Enough with that. Next thing: Tony.

Now that the new distribution methods are ready and proven, and we've added even more methods than originally planned, the March airdrop is cancelled.  November airdrop was the last one that paid to holders in proportion to their balances.

This is the list of the current distribution methods (in no particular order) that we'll continue to use and improve:

1. Cashback.

2. Verification rewards and referral rewards to those who verify their real name.  It is true that the referral system didn't work quite well for new users who have no Bytes yet, and we are going to introduce a new scheme which will allow to refer new users without sending them any Bytes.

3. Giveaways, such as those that Rafael does to his youtube subscribers.

4. Mass sending of textcoins to subscribers of our partners.  We have done two so far https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1heT6TUSpTJgRW-FUM0LbcoVjXZRCb3PbXQQLmzvNRvM/edit#gid=323859176 and will work on improving conversion in the future campaigns.

To be honest: I don't think that those distribution method worked very well.
Sure they will bring new users, and I agree that this is the most important part for any crypto, but at what price?
- Cashback doesn't take off since there are not enough users. It's like the chicken-and-egg problem. I'm certain that this will work at a later time.
- Verification already caused a lot of trouble (see this thread) and according to the numbers, most people don't really use it.
- Giveaways: I think they could work, if done correctly.
- Mass sending textcoins: If BYTEBALL ensures the partners that the subscribers will stay, there are a lot of potential partners out there. But most of the time, only people from this thread or the slack subscribe to get some balls.

I think it is crucial to distribute the remaining bytes very fast. And I would prefer competeting marketing actions combined with giveaways. Let the world feel the pressure!
There are 1,000,000 GBYTE - 665,282 GBYTE already distributed, so 334,717 GBYTE to go.
Let me give you some examples:

1. Tony should go out to the exchanges and say they get 1,000 GBYTE each, if they integrate BYTE exchange within 1 month from his message (maybe via a smart contract?). Make that for 10 or 20 exchanges.
That way there is a market for people who have never heard about BYTEBALL and they can buy them right away and also the "We need exchanges"-people fall silent.

2. The same with companies. Not cashback, give the BYTES to the company. If a company integrates BYTES to their payment process, until, lets say 07-01-2018 (or any other date not to far in the future) they get 100 GBYTE each. That will cover their costs and people have new options to actually USE BYTES in the blink of an eye and the "We need usecases"-people fall silent.

3. Make a marketing contest: Let people create Banner ads and videos that people can integrate on their websites and profils. Use the poll bot to let the community decide which is the best banner/logo/video. Price: 100 GBYTE each (or less for the second and third place). It sure is a lot, but imagine the buzz when people hear they can become "rich" through BYTEBALL over night and also the "Do some marketing"-people fall silent.

4. Give the translators some BYTES. I've had it in the slack but: Set up a wiki or FAQ in different languages. Give the translators some bytes. Make it easy for people to read about BYTEBALL in their language. Give some BYTES to the wallet translators as well for upcoming languages.

5. Go further with cashback(!) and giveaways, but with a limit. 100,000 GBYTE for cashback and 100,000 GBYTE for giveaways. End it after that.

6. Let the verification and referral rewards run till a certain date and stop there. For instance until 09-01-2018. They don't work as good as it seemed in the first place. With a deadline, maybe people will use it to get some free bytes.

x. After that: Distribute the remaining BYTES to the community fund. To be honest: $2m is not that much for a project that might run for the next few years. Most people don't want to spend their money, and the community fund can give some BYTES away in the future and since Tony is a member of that fund he can also decide what to do with it.

This mess with undistributed BYTES have to end. And in my opinion it should end soon.

Well said!
The problem is not cancelling the airdrop. The problem is HOW to distribute the remaining coins in a more effective and meaningful way.
Crypto is a highly competitive world now, so many projects emerge out on a daily basis, we have to do it right and do it fast to make sure Byteball a success which it well deserve!
I totally agree with Tony that the GOAL is to bring more users in the Byteball eco-system, however the underway cashback or giveaway bytes thing is far from enough or efficient as we seen. As many crypto-veterans know, to be the, say top 10, coin on the CM and to be list on as many exchanges with good reputation as possible, itself is one of the most effective ways to attract more attention and bring more users, and even better, once we got there it's much easier to bring big corporations on board, and then the small merchandises and more adopters will follow.
May be we could reserve 10% for DEV, 10% for Community Fund(to fund byteball related projects and ecosystem), 10% for marketing(listing, bounty, giveaway...) could be a feasible way to do the job, just keep it understood and transparent to the community, I believe most of the real byteball fans will support the project as they did since the very beginning!

An update about future distribution plans.

So far, bytes were mainly distributed via airdrops to holders of BTC and Bytes, and a relatively small portion was distributed through the cashback program.  We started this free distribution with the purpose of getting the currency as wide spread as possible, and while the purpose stays the same, methods can change.  The airdrop method worked well to get the initial user base, but it also proved to be the least efficient in terms of user acquisition cost.

Over the next few months, we'll add more methods of free distribution.  One of them is already being developed, I expect it to be ready in the first half of December.

The new methods are designed to grow our user base faster than the money supply.

While the new methods are still untested, it is early to drop the airdrops.  That's why the next round of distribution to Bytes and BTC holders is tentatively planned for the full moon of March 2, 2018.  The rules are the same as in the previous round:

For every 16 BTC you receive 0.1 GB,
For every 1 GB you receive additional 0.1 GB,

and similar rules for blackbytes.

This round can be postponed or even canceled depending on performance of other distribution methods.

As I said before, airdrops to holders of BTC and Bytes, which we did on full moons, were a good way to bootstrap the network and get initial attention.  But last few airdrops failed to attract any significant number of new users while quickly consuming the undistributed pool.  We had to pivot to other distribution methods, but at the time I was writing the above post they were not ready yet, and I had to tentatively put another old-style airdrop on the calendar.

Other similar methods will be added over time, the purpose is to use the remaining undistributed coins most efficiently to acquire as many new users as possible.

There were multiple suggestions to redirect a part of undistributed funds from free distribution, i.e. from acquiring users, and spend it for hiring more people, paying contractors, etc.  While I understand the reasoning behind these suggestions, it is also important that we learn to spend money wisely, with the maximum effect per spent $, before (and if) we scale up the budget.  Anyway, it is unnecessary to repurpose the undistributed funds now as we have enough funds in the Community Fund to fund the current operations in the near future: it is over $1m in Bytes (plus another $1m in less liquid blackbytes).

Thanks for the updates. I think it would be better to have more transparency of the future distribution.
BTW, is there any plan to reband the project to attract more audiences as a marketing strategy as NEO(Antshare)/NANO(Railblocks) did?

Binance is open for new coin listing(http://info.binance.com), Tony may want to create an entry for Byteball and let users vote for it. It's a good way to promote Byteball and attract more users anyway.

byteball has less than nothing to lose and a ton to gain by switching to mbyte or smaller. i truly can't believe not one single coin with this issue has ever done anything to address it. it rams home once again how unworldly crypto developers are.

The main concern against MB was that it adds too many leading 0s to the price in BTC and makes it hard to read. But I agree with you, I would expect MB to have a positive effect because most people (especially the normal people you want to reach) value things in $

Probably need rebranding like antshares did to NEO ,people when they see MB and GB they think of DATA ,Byteball is more a currency then DATA,rebranding to something else then MB,GB and use the equivalent of MB so circulating supply will be 1 billion instead of 1 million so 1 new Byteball=old Byteball/1000 will definitely bring more people to Byteball
good point! Hope tony could address this issue sooner then later

Version 1.2.0 is released https://github.com/byteball/byteball/releases.
It includes ability to partially recover from seed:

http://i.imgur.com/ntvfzQq.png

As was said before, the seed doesn't allow to recover blackbytes because they are not stored on the public database.
Recovery works only in full wallets because it scans the local copy of the database for addresses generated from the seed.

To restore your bytes (but not blackbytes) from seed, you will need to download the wallet, choose "Full wallet", wait that it syncs and then go to the Recovery menu in Settings.

Also, a number of small bugs fixed in this release.
Great Work! Will give it a try:)

We'll have our 2nd distribution round under the Full Moon, on 11th of February at 0:33 UTC.
We will probably follow the Full Moon calendar for future rounds too.

Bitcoin snapshot will be taken in the first block after the date.
Snapshot of Byteball database will be taken on exactly this date and will include only final transactions.

The transition bot is already working (find the link at https://byteball.org), chat with it to link your Bitcoin address and check the currently linked addresses and their balances.  If you participated in the 1st round, your linked addresses stay the same, you don't need to link again.

The distribution rules:

BTC to bytes: 1 BTC of proven balance gives you 62.5 MB (0.0625 GB)
BTC to blackbytes: 1 BTC of proven balance gives you 2.1111 * 62.5 million blackbytes (money supply of blackbytes is 2.1111 times more than that of bytes)
Bytes to bytes: 1 byte on any Byteball address gives you 0.1 new bytes
Bytes to blackbytes: 1 byte on linked Byteball address gives you 0.21111 blackbytes

If you already hold bytes, please move them to one of the linked BB addresses (chat with the bot to learn what your linked addresses are) before the distribution date to receive your share of blackbytes.  This is a technicall necessity that follows from how blackbytes work: we need to send the private payloads to your device and we know only the device address of the linked BB address, not of any other BB address.  If you don't care about blackbbytes for some reason, you don't need to do anything.  If you didn't touch your bytes after the 1st round (i.e. didn't send or receive a single transaction), you also don't need to do anything since all your bytes are still on the linked address.

Blackbytes that remain undistributed because some people didn't move their bytes to the linked address, will be transferred to a development fund which will be used to pay for future promotion and development.

In this round and at the current market prices, bytes give you a much larger share in the distribution than Bitcoins.  For example, holding 1 GB gives you the same as holding 1.6 BTC:
1 GB -> 0.1 GB
1.6 BTC -> 1.6 * 0.0625 = 0.1 GB
This is one of the nice things about being an early adopter.

Chat with the bot to check the current status or link new Bitcoin addresses and don't forget to move your Bitcoins and Bytes to the linked addresses before the February Full Moon.

Don't these rates equate to hardly any supply getting distributed?

Bytes to bytes: 1 byte on any Byteball address gives you 0.1 new bytes = 10% of released supply = 1%
BTC to bytes: 1 BTC of proven balance gives you 62.5 MB (0.0625 GB) = 100,000 (approx BTC linked) = 6,250 GB = 0.625%

Total = 1.625%

I mean 20 BTC linked is just 1.25 GB which is 0.05 BTC at current market prices (if you even believe in that price and likely to be diluted). Not really worth my time so I'll probably be passing on this one. Unless I've got something wrong?

P.S. Not ungrateful for the free money, just thinking economically with opportunity costs, transfer fees etc

You're right, I guess there are something missing here. I remember tony said the 2nd round would distribute about 10% of all bytes.

It’s my belief that ease of use is the key to adoption of cryptocurrencies by regular users, and we continue to improve it in Byteball.  We already have quite a few services that work in easy to use and lightweight chat interface but, up until now, the chat window itself was not always easy to reach.  Now, chat got its own tab.

http://i.imgur.com/7lrVWke.png
Byteball is the only crypto platform so far that has payment and communications functions intertwined, the two functions act together to strengthen each other and create more value than each function taken alone.

Upgrade to the new release 1.1.0 https://github.com/byteball/byteball/releases.
Major changes:
* Chat is now reachable through its own tab
* Added ability to select units for blackbytes, such as GBB for gigablackbytes
* When a new version is released, you'll be automatically notified
* When the hub changes its witness list, it will automatically suggest making similar change
* Better alignment, more polished UI (let me know if you notice any imperfections)
* A number of small bugs fixed

Keep on the great work!

His parents as well as all of his friends are in complete shock.
I myself talked to him yesterday, and he was active here yesterday.

Please keep him and his family in your prayers tonight.
