Why not wrap your Bitcoins?
by
sub0
on 06/04/2021, 15:55:13 UTC
I have hung on since 2012 and love Bitcoin as much as anyone. But now I'm wondering: WHY NOT wrap your Bitcoins?

There's only one thing better than Bitcoin. Bitcoin with yield. Bitcoin you can do something with. Like getting rich and having fun in DeFi while still owning your Bitcoins.

To me it doesn't matter which of the two blockchains hold my coin.  I trust Bitcoin and Ethereum equally.

Yes, there is smart contract risk.

Asking because I have not gone all in yet but the DeFi yield drug is hard to resist.

Yield...so much yield.

I'm currently invested in:

BTC,ETH,XMR,ETC,GNO,FCT,GNT,ZEC,LSK,STEEM,SNGLS,SC,STRAT,WAVES,NVO,MYST,BAT,XRP,NVO

60% BTC
20% ETH
20% other alts

I like GNO a lot. They seem to have a great mix of german and american engineers.

Their whitepaper and videos show the potential of prediction markets.

I store everything in Hive, with a 35 character passphrase, backed up to Google Drive and Dropbox.

I should probably be using paper wallets, but don't like the idea of having to rely on wherever I end up storing the paper.

Gox has cost me thousands of dollars (5 digits) in losses over the last year.

All withdrawal attempts have been stalled indefinitely (2-3 months - I eventually gave up and cancelled)

To summarize Gox:

- The only way to withdraw is by buying coin at a $100+ premium and then withdrawing the coin.

- They don's speak the truth.

- They should be prosecuted for fraud.

A friend in China mentioned today there's growing curiosity about BTC there after it was featured this weekend on CCTV.  It's made it to the daily hot topic on sina weibo.  Anyone want to speculate on whether/when this might be reflected in the exchanges?

We've discussed this quite a bit since the first CCTV news.  Word is that the latest news was neutral to somewhat positive. I think we are going to see adoption in China, both as a speculative investment but also because of the world economic situation. Something we have to consider also, is that people may start to get behind it as a big FU to the USD. That is probably why the government has been pretty open to it.

I imagine that over the next 6 months to a year that China will be the biggest holders of BTC. Just on population alone, it only takes a few thousand wealthy people to make that happen. Just a feeling of a guess.

As the price of BTC goes up, we either need to go to another term e.g. mBTC or do a split (if that is possible). With the latter no one loses holding power as with creating new shares. I just don't see people being as game to buy when the price is high. But, if it truly starts to grow and is seen as valuable, then mBTC will be the new term.

IAS

I agree.  It's psychological as much as anything.  When we start using mBTC as the standard, I would be surprised if the price didn't increase almost immediately.

If you're a nobody investor without much money, would you feel more comfortable bragging to your friends that that you bought into the BTC market for .1BTC or would you rather say I bought 10,000 mBTC?

I agree that mBTC is psychologically better. It doesn't matter if it seems silly to the scientifically minded among us. Several laymen I have spoken to have told me they feel Bitcoin is now too expensive for them to buy in.

We all know you can buy fractions, but laymen typically do not and those are the folks we are trying to bring onboard.

Thoughts on price movement when Mtgox reopens.
by

We are now 3+ hours into the Mtgox 12 hour trading outage and I'm sure everyone is wondering where the price will go when trading resumes.

I think the price will rise and here's why:

If you are anxious to SELL right at this moment; you can open an account with another exchange right away, transfer your coin within an hour and sell them.

If you are anxious to BUY right at this moment; you can open an account with another exchange, but due to the delays in transferring fiat you have no ability to get your funds into that account within the 12 hour window.

Also, presumably, there is a lot of fiat tied up in Mtgox accounts during the outage that is/was intended to be used to buy more coin.

The conclusion being that the ability to buy during the outage is limited whereas the ability to sell is not.

If the above reasoning is accurate, then it seems to me that buying pressure is now suppressed. When trading resumes, that released pressure should push the price higher.

Thoughts?

There is a way of increasing the withdrawal limit on MtGox. You have to go through another round of verification in order to raise your account status from verified to trusted.

I'm not so sure the term "bubble" is a good one.

Since Bitcoin is so many things - currency, commodity, payment system, protocol, internet money -  you can't make direct comparisons with say; the real estate market or the gold and silver markets.

IMO Bitcoin has several of the qualities of an Internet startup company with new/revolutionary technology. And some startups just keep gaining value until they are multi-billion dollar companies...

The fact that valuation is rising fast does not necessarily imply that there is a bubble.
