private keys are set lengths because of the algorithm that is used to convert them into an address. nems wallet files/private keys work in a much different way to brain wallets. you cant use a private key unless it is the right length and only using alpha numeric codes.. the password for your wallet file will use a password and for that, there is nothing wrong with using a very long password to encrypt the wallet file which would most certainly add to security. the difference being that with brain wallets you dont need the wallet file. this means with wallet files someone would actually have to get into your computer to try and crack the wallet file appose to just booting the client and trying passwords. the odds of someone guessing your private key is so small that it doesnt need to be any longer afaik.
Thanks for the answer. But I'm not sure if I get it right; without the access to the wallet, private key has no use?
i.e. cannot someone keep generating private keys and try to login with them, while using a generic wallet?

Hey guys. And a question by me which is a basic one and very likely talked about before. Considering the private key is the most important data to secure your account, is there any reason to use a more secure password/brain wallet then "00a95cc54834d5ab342pql19ae7b177a15b9d3212d6c69fe5c8740612a0ee4d492" ?
This is the private key of an account and why should I make a REALLY complicated password like we're doing with NXT? (200 char passwords with space and special symbols is not uncommon).
They should open a BTC_B/BTC market. Customers with coins lost in the hack can sell their BTC_B at a discount to speculators banking on Bter making good on repaying them eventually.
No, withdrawals BTC and other alt's first, they losing trust every minute by minute without withdrawals.
BTC_B <> BTC market will create BTC flow to the market; people will deposit BTC in order to get "virtual" BTC. That's good for everyone.
On top of that, they started with withdraws. They are just advancing slowly

Re: BTER.com hacked - 7170 BTC stolen [DON'T KEEP YOUR MONEY ON AN EXCHANGE]
Why would they run away? A-holes stole over 7000 BTC, they will reopen their exchange and people as stupid as they are, will still continue trading at their exchange.
I don't think that a lot of people will use bter.com again, only who have believed at the story of the "hacked cold wallet". However news about the withdrawal?
I will use them again.
Are you sure at 100% that you will use them again? I don't believe you , that's very strange. Only a "crazy" person will use bter again as cryptocurrency exchange. This is very insane, and maybe will cause another "loss" to all the customers; however at the end it is your money and the finale choice is yours.
Good luck.
Well, they this is their 2. giant loss. They managed to survive both (at least that's how it seems like right now). Meaning they are at least trying hard. We don't know what would happen if the same would happen to Bittrex, hitbtc, Polo etc.
So while they are incompetent and a mess in public relations, they are at least honest and durable.

All withdraws got disabled now.
The withdraws done before that seems like to be put on hold.

Yuppi ! I will try to request a couple of withdrawals of altcoins and I hope they will process them as soon as possible (because they have the altcoins).
Balances seem to be zeroed, or is it just me? I had some doges, but now I apparently have none. Hope they will this glitch in the nearest future.
Check "Interest" tab on Account menu.

I'm also wondering how much coins got lost in exchanges.
People losing interest in crypto, losing passwords, forgetting how much coins they have, dying etc etc.
I would assume that this kind of "income" might be one of the major incomes of an exchange.

Withholding fiat is a bit more problematic than withholding altcoins I think that is why they first enable fiat withdrawals, but then again, why enable NXT? (simply because they are invested up to their necks in NXT and probably can cover a nice portion of the "stolen" amount by selling NXT)
