Would something like the Debian Constitution be useful for Bitcoin development?
by

I realize that Debian (the distribution) has had a major hiccup or two over the years *cough*OpenSSL*cough*, but it still happens to be one of the best global software development projects that exist. I don't pretend to understand how the current Bitcoin developers handle things, but I would be interested in learning about how this type of system might benefit or hinder Bitcoins. Is this type of democracy not useful for what Bitcoin is trying to accomplish? If you haven't checked it out yet, here is their constitution: http://www.debian.org/devel/constitution .

I'm wondering, looking at how stable BTC has been staying lately, is this the result of the alternate cryptocurrencies and people trading back and forth? Is this beneficial?

Where we obsess over the latest scandals, scammers, and pre-mines. Where new coins are valued more because of how new and profitable they are rather than their benefits to the eco-system. When I first started getting into the Bitcoin craze, I was amazed at it's utility and optimistic mature community. These forums have turned into a strange, chaotic, pessimistic hang out that is driven by pure speculation. All I see and feel here is greed, and I have gotten caught up in it as well. I don't think this is what Satoshi had intended.

I've been getting really into cryptocurrencies in the last two weeks and have mined a little bit of a few, but I don't have much of a rig. I can't decide which of the new alt currencies I should back.

Which is your favourite? which is the best from a technical POV? which do you hold the most of? Now you can show your support for your favourite by donating something to the appropriate address, help convince me to support your coin of choice! I'll report in a week which got the most:

Bitbar: BQ5yoALKrzRvu1pgNNXB1DySWb2QE93feq
Junkcoin:  7j3AfFq4n6ECDtCpNYbUDGE23ZPishMqEn
CHNcoin: CXZcrnMFh8DQmAPx9yDk147rp496r1LDxi
Mincoin: MEvktAR9MM6VscX8nUnpgn5uuZhXNd4tuk
YaCoin: YLV42bW9zTjfuj6sFdTpFg2DotGbEopkks
RoyalCoin: RSuLRPBLocd5b2wFCrcksZQadsXUMF5fPm
Litecoin: LdreaWnUdUNnbqvM5dAYEDgu4PE2vEvoUZ

(well it was worth a try, right?)

At least this is original Smiley

Re: ★★ ▀▄▀▄▀ BITBAR on BTER now LIVE ▀▄▀▄▀ ★★

The only value in cryptocoins lies in
1) Stability in price (good for merchants and users alike)
2) Security of the network
(besides obviously ease of use, anonymity, etc.).
The price doesnt really matter if you are interested in building a working economy out of it, that is just a side effect of its usage adoption.

Now with BitBar the issue is
1) as tiny alt coin there is no stability at all,
2) as tiny alt coin the network isnt very secure either
besides other problems like denominations are too big (pple are already want to switch to mBTC or uBTC), bitbar deliberately fools you into thinking just because its rare it must be valuable - Instead it is just the opposite with cryptocoins,
if they are not rare and are traded all over the place they have value
.
my 2 satoshis.

I can see what you are saying, but what about all the people who tend to hoard coins as a store of value?

Edit: redundant

I think hoarding is not storing value but speculating that the currency appreciates in value through increased adoption, ie higher volume of market transactions.
IMO nobody just wants to "store" fiat in volatile commodities/currencies, if it isn't speculation in part at least.

Also if banks want to transact money via cryptocurrencies, it makes no sense to use BitBar if they already use Bitcoin (type a number and hit send in both cases). Also 100k dollar bills make sense if you would otherwise end up with piles of paper money, but sending 10kBTC or 100k BTC makes no difference really.

oh but it would make sense, you are aware that Bitcoin chain grows by 6GB+ every year, at current transaction rate?  You think banks/big players like to deal with all that bloated blockchain shit with tons of dust/spam and possibly tainted coins? Compared to Bitcoin, BTB blockchain is tiny and will always be tiny because it's PPC based, with dust/spam protection. Also the large denomination discourage using it as transactional currency, so it is the perfect reserve crypto for banks/big players.

What would be cool to see, are these "banks" keeping reserves of bitbars in cold storage Smiley. Gold bars in a vault.

Bitbar fills the gap of combining great ideas, MC2 will innovate.

Oh yes, 520 confirms to maturity is pure brilliance. Such innovation. They even used the word "bar" in the name instead of "coin". I can barely keep up with all the changes.

Move over, Satoshi!
You forgot the inclusion of scrypt and POS. And besides, I didn't say that Bitbar innovates, try reading the things that you quote.

Alright then. Bitbar combined the great ideas of NVC with... the name "Bitbar".

Hey, wanna buy my Bitbar? I'll give you 1:1.

More like combining Novacoin with Mincoin.

I could call Novacoin a good idea without bursting out laughing... its problem was the premine (something Bitbar faithfully copied). Mincoin, however, was and is a terrible idea. There's a reason FTC and CNC exploded and it didn't (and I'm still not even saying FTC/CNC are good coins).

While the mainstream is discussing using mBTC as the de facto currency unit, we've got knuckleheads over here making a premined coin with a block reward of 2. Notice LTC (the successful altcoin) is more plentiful than BTC, FTC even more so.

If you ask me, PPCoin is the only honest coin with a truly good idea behind it at the moment (besides NMC, which is merge-mined).

Yep, PPCoin was definitely innovative. Was Bitbar pre-mined or instamined? I know whichever one it is, a lot of those coins are now a bounty for an exchange. So at least they are trying. Only time will tell if a store of wealth is useful vs being able to easily spend them.

Re: Why the testnet reset?
by
twelph
on 07/05/2013, 23:45:54 UTC
The wiki says the first testnet reset was done because testnet coins were becoming valuable. Isn't this kind of stupid? To have a testnet that has any worth at all, we NEED it to be a mini version of Bitcoin. This means we need to replicate Bitcoin's community in a miniature way. This, in turn, means testnet coins NEED to have value, or there's no point in having a testnet.

I'm pretty sure that the Bitcoin developers don't want to be responsible for their own coins competing with each other. Testnet would start to be viewed as "new and improved" Bitcoin, and that's not what they are trying to do.

I believe they had to change it back when the difficulty stayed too high after a bunch of miners got off and it was stuck for a while. It happened right when BTC-E added it to their site. Terracoins were stuck without confirmations for days.

Just wanted to chime in here that I've been doing business through you guys well before I even had a Bitcointalk forum account. I watched as exchanges closed down or messed things up, and as people waited in massive queues on MTGOX. Thanks for the professional and quick service, you are the best! Smiley
