replace the ; in the command with \;
all semicolons need to be escaped, otherwise bash treats them as separate commands

Ok, same problem here.. the miner has been working flawlessly for a month and now I have experienced this behaviour - and that was actually after I have increased cooling and airflow.

Do you have any tips what is actually causing this problem?

Also, what would be the general symptoms of a card needing to be returned for replacement? I am running a mild overclock but it has been stable for almost a month before..

I am not sure about the Xorg explanation, but let me try:
Xorg is attached to a one GPU, the only one that works with a screen when you boot your rig.
When that GPU lockes up, Xorg is lost...

Thanks, will investigate. I thought that Xorg lockup will make all the gpus not to work as the ATI driver is dependent on its hooks to X for its function.
I will keep an eye on that... I still have remote access when the lockup occurs so I will have a look if the other cards mine, I have only checked one of them and that one seemed to be stuck - phoenix still running and responding to new blocks but not getting results.

Symptoms of GPU failure on Linux

As I have mentioned in my previous post, I have Xorg process suddenly run at 100% CPU and mining stops. Could that be a hardware failure? Also, what are other hardware failure (GPU) symptoms on Linux?

Thanks

Xorg freezes - could be card malfunction?

Hi,
I have been happily mining with following setup almost a month without an issue:

- 6870 mining + powering display
- 5830 mining only
- Geforce 560Ti (no mining, only for CUDA work)

Other details: Gigabyte Z68X chipset, 4 gigs of ram, i5 processor.

The system has been running 24/7 for a month, the only change being improvement of airflow last week, before that the 6870 has been running between 70-80 and the 5830 around 88, after the change the 6870 runs at 66C and the 5830 at 75C.

All has been great, the screen has been used for occasional recipe lookup or weather check (the computer is in the kitchen). Two days ago I had a problem - the computer was not responding locally and remote login yielded that the Xorg process was eating 100% of a cpu (or more precisely, its core). If I issued a command to check the cards temperatures, it hang (understandably).

All was well after reboot again (not initially as I have screwed up the install before the problem by fiddling with boot options and the problem did not manifest itself until that crash/reboot). I have actually reinstalled the distro (ubuntu 11.04).

Could this be a failure of one of the cards? Or is it just bug with drivers? I am yet to discover if the freeze is related to activity at that machine - I will monitor it remotely now to see if it also hangs by itself or if it's somehow related to the monitor wakeup.

Thanks a lot!

No, I don't think I can. This picture made me think it's probably ok:

http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/amd_6800series/images/31.htm

(it's upside down) - you can see that the air is just being diverted out and inside to the case. I am just blocking the inside of the case.

Same experience here - XFX 6870 (the reference design). Can "try" to underclock both in afterburner or TriXX, but the actual frequency is still high..

6870 exhaust "mod"
by

Hi,
I have the XFX 6870, the reference version with the single intake in the back of the card, however, the exhaust is split into two parts, one of them points out of the case but the other blows the air in. I was not really happy with the extra hot air getting back into my case, so I have taped over it.
Looking at the disassembly pictures it looks as a single stream of air divided between those two exhausts, could there be any problem with this? The temps are 65C incl. overclock and fan running on 40-50%.

Anything I should be worried about?

Second that. I have a few old boxes lying around but nowhere near enough of the right pieces.. Also, I have heard there was actually a designer program which allowed you to do CAD style model and then gave you a part list to order... that may be quite useful too...

Thanks! I have managed to compile it with a tiny bit of effort.. when I will be sitting in front of the miner I will try it out (as I understand it needs a bit of GUI for the setup)

Great thread. Does anybody has similar tips for 5830 overclock on linux? I have used the aticonfig which does allow core overclocking but the memory speed range it allows me to set is very small (only around 100 less than stock).

Do I need to flash the bios or is there any more advanced tool on linux?

I see a bit of confusion here about what is actually going on.

True, the hash-function is not reversible in sense that you can not know for certain what the input was. This is a problem in general if we were to get a document from a signature but in our case we have the majority of the input already and we are modifying only a small part to get difference in the hashes (as hash by itself is the same for the same input, we need to vary a bit of it).

It is theoretically possible to calculate an input for a hash of our choosing, the problem here is that the reverse hash function is so computationally complex at the moment that it is not even remotely feasible to perform it.

This is true for the general state of encryption and if that assumption is broken (which it may, you never know), we will have many more pressing issues to worry about than easy bitcoin generation.

The problem illustration commonly use is to imagine a multiplication of two very very large primes. Forward step is fine, we can multiply very large numbers relatively easily. The problem comes when we want to reverse the operation - at the moment there is no efficient way get these two primes back from the product.

Does that make sense/helps?

Tested on XFX 6870 (I believe it's a reference design)

- radeonvolt gives no output
