Don't discount the possibility that 1 XMR = 2000 USD = 1 bag of apples in the future.

I think both scenarios are possible.
Usd indeed might lose (almost) completely its value.
On the other hand, bitcoin reached 1100 usd so why not Monero which does everything bitcoin does but is also anonymous if one desires anonymity.

However, don't ask when is the future because nobody knows the answear.
