Ten Hag probably did not know what he can do with Ronaldo and how to use Ronaldo. He was unsure what he can achieve in Manchester United with available players and thought he can rely on Ronaldo in some matches or some early months of this season. I believe it is what Ten Hag thought even he knew that Ronaldo does not match with his tactics and formation like you said.

I disagree with Ten Hag and disrespect the coach about that too.
