Well, according to what I read, Lionel Messi said they never negotiated a deal with barcelona over his salary and his move out of europe has nothing with money as money had never been his issue or problem.
Personally, I wanted such a move for him as a move back to barcelona would cause same issues with the player's innnit, though, I do believe messi can play as a midfielder.

Lionel Messi did not flop during his stay at the french league, all these recent booes came as a result of him winning the finals over france. That was the biggest career decision Cristiano Ronaldo had, he shouldn't have returned to Manchester United, I think Lionel Messi really learnt the lessons and moved elsewhere. Barcelona fans were hopeful that Messi would agree to a sensational return at the end of the season, but it seems the move was in pursuit of a life further away from the spotlight. It is clear that the club and Xavi did everything possible to make Messi's return to Barça a reality, but the situations on both sides have made it impossible for this to happen. Also looking at it closely, Messi know what's best for Barcelona. Barcelona are in a rebuilding process so it's understandably he wants each and every players to be part of it, very unselfish part from him.
