As soon as it was possible to use custom ringtones, i did so. I particularly remember my old Samsung GSM phone, where you had to encode the ringtones in some fancy compressed wav format and transfer it via cable onto the device. You also had to compress the hell out of the audio to swamp the noise of the compression algorithm. This was long before touchscreens and even years ahead of 3G.

Thanks to the links here, i can use a variety of modem sounds (and dramatic orchestral pieces), as i like to assign distinct tones to special individuals.

EDIT: My standard ringtone at the moment is the plucked guitar intro of "Could you be loved" (Bob Marley) in a 1 bar-loop. Occasionally it happens that somebody nearby in public will sing or hum along when it goes off

Anyway, I was surprised to see it mentioned here so soon after first learning about it. For the most part, I have been using web-based downloaders - nice to know there are other options.

I like it convenient, i am using jDownloader2 to grab Youtube media from a link, it offers me to download the audio (m4a) separately from the video stream file and decodes it inline using an ffmpeg-plugin. I do the processing in Audacity (which i was using for ages after "Goldwave" wasn't maintained anymore) and send it to the Smartphone via USB as 128kBit mp3.
