Avalon Advanced Interface different between controllers
by

on 17/10/2017, 21:31:29 UTC
Quick question for those that use Avalon 741 or other Avalon miners....

When I click the "Advanced Version", I am usually taken to the OpenWRT interface. However, on a couple of controllers, clicking the "Advanced Version" takes me to a view like the one pictured below. I am unable to load the OpenWRT interface on these controllers unless I reflash the fw only for it to work a couple of times and then go back to the view pictured.

Has anyone else had this? How did you get it to show the OpenWRT interface instead?

if I plug it all in and it works  you know the issue is the psu or one of your cables.

We met a local guy who has a 741, tried one of his USB/AUC3 converters and bingo... we're mining. So we got a bad batch of converters... we tried 20 of those little suckers and none of them worked lol.

Thanks everyone for your input on this thread.

Unless you are mining physically yourself, it's probably not worth your time.

I second this--if profit is your main objective. If you're cloud mining or having someone host you, they'll usually lock you into a contract long enough that they know the difficulty will make it unprofitable before you get to the end of the contract. There are of course some exceptions to this but I do not have any recommendations to give.

Not that I want to discourage you contributing to the bitcoin ecosystem, but it may be better to buy BTC and use future earnings from that to fund a mining operation of your own.

Thanks. Any idea what the default PW would be for the Pi?

Thanks.

Try username root and no password. It could also be "pi"

If you are required to set a password to continue as root, enter the command: passwd  and then set a password

do you live near NJ,USA?

maybe I could meet you and bring a working rasp pi 3 and a working psu and working cables.

if I plug it all in and it works  you know the issue is the psu or one of your cables.

If I plug it all in and it does not work   then the issue is your power outlets.

BTW I would not mine on a gfc outlet.

I could also bring a dmm  to test the power.

only works if you are close

Yeah I would drive to NJ. That's awesome of you to offer to a new member like me.

I am working with a friend on this and he has the equipment. If we don't get this resolved tomorrow, I will send you a pm

I'd recommend testing with a different PSU. At this point that seems the most likely thing!

I tried 3 different PSUs but they are probably all from the same batch. I'm concerned whatever hardware issue I have is present in all of the hardware I have.

Thanks again for all your help.

Yes that's the only way you can plug it in anyway.

Thank you, I'll give that a try for sure. I am not physically in the location where the miners are being tested -- my friend just told me he has tried 20 or more AUC3 converters and three different Avalon controllers; none worked so either we are incredibly unlucky, or like you said, the USB interface between the pi and the AUC3 isn't sufficient as configured.

Ok, so it does look like the AUCs show up without power to the miner.

[...]

(Note: I have two AUCs, one is the newer one from an A741 and one is from an A6, connected to this Pi)

So you should at least see the AUC, even if you don't have the right power for the miner

wavelengthsf, thanks so much for taking the time to test this. So at this point, with an AUC3 connected to the Pi but not visible in the cgminer status, I know I have either a bad AUC3 or bad USB cable/connection between the Pi and the AUC3. Too bad it doesn't show up in the Avalon 7 firmware.

Now, if Canaan would get back to my support request, that would be helpful. I think most of China is off till the 9th October due to national holiday so I guess I'll have to sit tight and be patient!

Seems like your AUC3 is broke. Alternatively it could be the dodgy usb ports on the pi. Try attaching a decent USB hub to run it off instead.

I agree it does seem that way. I tried a couple of different AUC3's but same result.

I'd like to try your suggestion with the USB hub. Would you set it up this way?:

Avalon controller (pi 3) -> USB hub -> AUC3 converter -> miner

I have the same question open in a Mining help thread here but thought I'd ask you guys who are most knowledgable with cgminer.

Running cgminer 4.10.0 on a Raspberry Pi 3, which is connected to an Avalon AUC3, which is connected to an Avalon 741 ASIC miner. When I start cgminer, I get the following response:

Are there downloadable USB drivers for the Raspberry Pi 3? Anyone else ever have this issue and successfully resolve it?

Thanks

I have a spare AUC cable at home and a Pi - i will test to see if it shows up with no miner when I get off work in a couple hours.

Do you have an ATX PSU you could try to hook up to the miners to see if that worked?

That would be great. Thanks for offering to do this.

I do not have an ATX PSU capable of powering the A741 unfortunately.

Does anyone here recall ever updating the USB drivers on the raspberry pi? I expect the factory firmware/fw downloaded from Canaan would have the correct drivers ahead of time, but figured I'd ask.

Here's the output when I try to manually start cgminer on the Raspberry Pi:

Were the other PSUs also Canaan sorcerers?

Yes, they were all the same unit Canaan ships with the Avalon 741

How are you powering the Pi?

USB cable with a 3.0 amp plug (also tried 0.3 A -- too low, and 1.5 A.) I have ordered an official RPi3 power supply that I'll test

I'm thinking the power issue is the miner not starting. I've never had the AUC itself show up (without the miner), but I only have 5 of these so not a huge amount of testing with it.

This is actually very helpful. I was unsure if the converter would show up alone if it's not connected to a miner. If it doesn't show up until a working miner is connected, then I have a few points of failure to test (not just the connection between the controller and converter.)

The miner does power up with green lights at the back and an amber light on the front -- could this still happen if it was underpowered?

It really seems like its a power problem to me - can you get a tester to make sure you're getting 220 from those?  Alternatively, you could try with a switching PSU and see what happens.

Thanks, will confirm it's 220v.

Should the AUC3 converter show up in the cgminer status regardless of whether a connected miner has enough power? Or are you saying it's a power issue for the converter that's causing it to not show up in the cgminer status?

Edit: tried two other PSUs and I have just updated the OP to include that

Replaced 4 pin cables

You need 5pin cable for Avalon 7xx. Please take a picture of your AUC dondgle while it is connected and everything is powered up.

Here's a close up of the converter https://i.imgur.com/jgn4kwX.jpg

Here's the light that's turned on on the converter:

I was referring to the power cables when I called them 4 pin, which is the wrong name for them anyway lol

Post a picture of the power supply and the back of the miner (where the power supply PCIe connects to it) - are the lights on the back of the miner on?

Is the power supply the right voltage? Are the pci-e cables the right wiring? (if you hold the cables the same way, are all the wires the same color)?

Solar is good to replace low energy use cases; miners are high energy usage and would require a lot of solar equipment and batteries that would have a very long ROI over paying energy bills and negotiating lower prices with your provider. If you had a solar installation for some other purpose, mining would be a great way to use up any excess capacity.

Whats interesting is you say the AUC has a green light. This green light denotes connectivity yet when you look at your status page, the AUC itself isnt even registering.

Before you mess with the miner, try to get the AUC dongle read by the controller. Thats the first step before even messing with the Avalon unit itself.
Thanks. So if the dongle is connected but no miners are plugged in, I should expect to see the ASC* device listed under Avalon Devices. This helps me narrow down where the failure is. Will try a third USB cable and a third AUC3 dongle and report back.

Here are some pictures a friend took of the miner in question while hooked up:

I will get a picture up when I get back soon. The light on the miner is green. The light on the AUC3/USB dongle is also green. The PSU and cables came with the unit direct from Canaan. Will confirm about the wiring.

What country are you in? Are you running 220v? (The canaan power supplies only run on 220).

How is power getting to the PSU - through an outlet, a PDU, etc? What's the power outlet look like?

In the US. PSU is plugged into a regular socket at that has 220v going to it through a GFI. Will post a picture when I get back.

Edit: From a software perspective, what else could I troubleshoot? I can see my worker on the nicehash dashboard, which leaves me to believe pool/internet connectivity is okay. One question I was unable to find a clear answer on is whether cgminer may need ports forwarded on the router but I don't think it does as the communication with the pool is outbound only. I haven't changed any other configuration on the Raspberry Pi unit as I anticipated it would work out the box but if anyone has had similar issues that were resolved by change to the software configuration, I'd like to hear what you did.

Thanks for your thoughtful replies. Will get those pictures up asap.

do you have any working avalon's?

I've tested three miners, all with separate PSUs but none are visible through the controller's cgminer status page so if we have a problem with the miner/PSU it's common to all three.

I have one A741 connected to a controller, which is connected via Ethernet to the router. I have confirmed connectivity with mining pools like nicehash (can see our worker listed through the Nicehash dashboard) but the miner is not hashing.

Here is what I've tried to troubleshoot this issue:

Replaced PSU
Replaced AUC3 cable
Replaced miner
Replaced controller
Replaced AUC3 dongle
Replaced ethernet cable
Replaced USB cable connected to controller
Tried 0.3A and 2.0A wall plug for controller
Replaced 4 pin cables
Tried different pools (can successfully see our worker through the pool admin panel but no hash rate)
Used both DHCP and static IP address for the controller

I am still unable to see the miners through the cgminer status page. When I run cgminer through the SSH interface to the Raspberry Pi, I get the message:

No devices detected!
Waiting for USB hotplug devices or press q to quit

I am attaching screenshots of the cgminer config and status screens and the output of the cgminer start command. I have the with the system, kernel, and cgminer api logs if needed.

CGMiner config: https://i.imgur.com/I5j1dlc.png
CGMiner status: https://i.imgur.com/46LNlg2.png
CGMiner CLI: https://i.imgur.com/r08OOQm.png

Hoping someone that's faced a similar issue has a suggestion of what to try next.
