Re: CoinTracking - Profit/Loss Portfolio and Tax Reporting for Digital Currencies

Hi Dominik,

Thanks for implementing these new methods. I noticed an error with the ACB tax reports that should be very simple to fix.

The tax reports show the cumulative gain over multiple years, without subtracting the gain or loss from previous years.

For example, say for DASH I had a capital gain of $1000 in 2017, and $500 in 2018. This means I should get taxed on $1000 of that gain in 2017 and $500 of that gain in 2018. But the current ACB tax reports show a gain of $1000 in 2017 and $1500 in 2018.

It's calculated as if I get get taxed on gains from previous years over and over again.

The solution would be to simply subtract the 2017 gains ($1000) from the total cumulative gains as of 2018 ($1500), and then report the difference as my 2018 gains ($1500-$1000=$500).

Here's a screenshot from CoinTracking to illustrate the problem:

If you need more specific examples I can email you more screenshots from my account.

Thanks,
Tim

Hi Tim,
Thank you for explaining the problem.
Could you submit this as a ticket via our HelpDesk (https://cointracking.freshdesk.com) with your username? Then we can check the problem directly with your tax report. That would be great. Thank you !

I just submitted a support request.

Thanks for your help,
Tim

3 New Methods for Tax Calculation

By popular request, three new methods for tax calculation are now available to all CoinTracking users:

- AVCO - Average Cost
Similar to FIFO, but with the average cost basis for every purchase.

- ACB - Adjusted Cost Base
This special adjusted method can be used in some countries like Canada or Sweden.

- OPTI - Optimized Calculation
This method will always provide the lowest profit.
1) All purchases that are long-term (by default > 1 year) are sold first starting with trades with the highest profit.
2) If there are no more long-term purchases available, short-term purchases (by default < 1 year) will be sold, starting with trades with the lowest profit.

I did a simple redesign of Current Balance where I basically just left everything where it was and only re-aligned all elements with a different font: Roboto.
I used the blue to highlight the important parts for that page, it guides the eyes and gives a quicker overview of the page.
A subtle outline on the white elements gives them a better contrast against the background.

http://bitcoincryptoprice.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/CT-current-balance.png

I agree. Thanks for doing this.

I've also done UI design in the past. It's critical for a product like this which seeks to present a lot of information, in an intuitive way, without forcing the user to think about navigation or get distracted by noise.

For me, the single biggest issue right now is the yellow font on the dashboard "coins" plot. And it would take seconds to change.

Give me green, orange, red... anything but yellow on a white background.

Also, the language, support and theme options at the top of the page are just noise and a waste of space 99% of the time. They should be nested in a settings menu, as you've shown.

It has the potential to be a great product, but good UI design is essential.

According to this thread the ACB (Adjusted Cost Basis) method required for Canadian and Swedish citizens was supposed to be completed in the first quarter of 2018.

Any update on this?

I'm getting desperate and would pay someone to get this done by mid next week.

Without it, many well-meaning taxpayers risk facing harsh fines.

Re: [ANN][XRB]Cryptocurrency's killer app: RaiBlocks micropayments
by

I lost all my Raiblocks / NANO, but I'm starting to rebuy at these levels, while folks are fearful.

I originally invested in early December and saw insane gains, but was unable with withdraw funds from Bitgrail before the hack (I had been trying for months).

Luckily, it was only 10% of my portfolio, as I keep no more than 20% of my portfolio in any one place.

It's a good idea to spread your portfolio in many places, so there is no single point of failure. Diversification in both assets and in storage mediums. That means hardware wallet + software wallets + several exchanges (with 2FA protection). Those who think their funds are secure by putting 100% of them on a hardware wallet are delusional, as they are still prone to loose everything due to human error (e.g., loosing recovery phrase).

I expect the most common ways of loosing funds in crypto are user error and exchange hacks. Diversification is currently the best protection against these things, and I wish more people took it seriously.

The fundamentals of NANO have not changed, and it has corrected 65% from the peak in BTC value. Looks like a reasonable place to scale back in IMO. And if it continues to fall, I'll add more at key resistance levels.

NANO is still undervalued compared to its transaction-focused competitors (LTC, DASH, BCH), and has dramatically better technology and value proposition.

Adjusted Cost Base (ACB) method-required for capital gains calculation in Canada
by
Arkaen
on 14/02/2018, 00:35:34 UTC
Hi Dario,

I've been an Unlimited subscriber for the past year and I love your service.

However, in Canada we’re required to use the Adjusted Cost Base (ACB) method for calculating capital gains. None of the other methods (like FIFO, etc) are allowed.

The calculation is explained in the links below, and I've given the equations at the end of this post.

I believe Bitcoin.tax implements this method, but they call it “Average Cost”.

However, I don't want to use Bitcoin.tax. I’m heavily invested into CoinTracking and plan to use it for years to come. I’m the person who suggested the alternative dashboard layout, and I’ve reported bugs in the past. I’ve also referred many people.

I think you’ve done a fantastic job, but the one critical thing missing is the ACB method required for Canadians (and I expect some other countries). That was originally why I got an Unlimited account.

As tax season approaches (March-April here), I think you'll see many people joining specifically to do their capital gains calculations. I see people defaulting to Bitcoin.tax for this reason, but when CoinTracking has the ACB method, I’ll be able to refer Canadians to your service -- which is superior in every other way.

Here are the equations for Adjusted Cost Basis (additional details in the first link above):

New Total ACB After a Buy Transaction = [Previous Total ACB] + ([Share Price] x [Number of Shares Purchased]) + [Transaction Costs]

New Total ACB After a Sell Transaction = [Previous Total ACB] – ([ACB per Share] x [Number of Shares Sold])

Capital Gain (or Loss) = ([Share Price] x [Number of Shares Sold]) – [Transaction Costs] – ([ACB per Share] x [Number of Shares Sold])

If you need any help clarifying the ACB calculation, I’m happy to help in any way I can. I'm comfortable with math (engineering background) and have some experience with algorithms (mainly signal processing and computational physics, not finance).

Thanks!

Re: ODN Obsidian - good bet for 2018?
by
Arkaen
on 08/02/2018, 09:41:05 UTC
what is ICO price for this?

At the crowdsale 1 bitcoin bought 21,433 ODN, so that's about 4665 sats, or around 19 cents USD, right now it's 2568 sats or 42 cents USD, so it's down in terms of bitcoin, but up in terms of USD!

I originally had a small position in it but I'm slowly realizing its value. There are many elements going for it:
 - it is a fork of stratis, and look at what the price of stratis did!
 - it is a platform for private dapps, and privacy coins are doing very well
 - it has a masternode, and it is one of the few coins that are both solid projects and also feature a masternode. I think masternode coins have very good economics because it locks a lot of supply so that price movements are much magnified when good news come out.

why buy some forks when you can just buy the real deal Stratis ? Strat three digits $ next year anyway.  Cheesy

Because Stratus market cap is is 60x higher. ODN has greater upside potential.

Stratus needs to become a top coin to see 60x growth, and there is tough competition. ODN just needs to become a midcap to see that upside. ODN can do 60x on speculative pumps alone.

Hi Dario,

Thanks for your hard work delivering all these features.

There's an import error with the new QuadrigaCX API.

I've included a screenshot below showing the correct import via spreadsheet (labeled "Quadriga") vs. the incorrect API import (labeled "QuadrigaCX").

The "buy" and "sell" amounts are reversed (should be BUY $245.02 CAD, SELL 0.74396196 ETH), and the transaction fee should be $1.23 CAD, not 1.23 ETH.

https://i.imgur.com/YJqZyCT.jpg

The same problem happens with BTC transaction imports.

Also, I recall there may have been a decimal place error when the API is allowed to import Canadian dollar deposits and withdrawals. I've since disabled this feature so I don't have a screencap, but I recall it was reporting a withdrawal of $10,000 as $10, when the true amount should be $10000. Likely an error based on comma vs point conventions in North America vs Europe.

Thanks!

Re: Next 100x?
by
Arkaen
on 22/09/2017, 06:40:23 UTC
My main criteria for high probability 100x: Low market cap. Highly undervalued compared to similar coins. Good development team. Use case that's in demand. Decent branding, with an appealing ticker that stands out, is easy to remember, and inspires speculation (Example of good tickers: DASH, OMG, ARK, PAY, WINGS. Example of trash tickers that hurt their coins: MAID, SNT, SNM).

My picks:

GEO (current market cap 3.3 million)
ZEN (current market cap 16 million)

GEO is special because 100x will only bring it to the mid caps. No need for it to become a top coin to see 100x. ZEN needs to get to $1.6 billion, which is moonshot. 25x is maybe more realistic for ZEN, unless it sees real-world adoption...

In a bull market, with a rising tide, these coins could do 100x on speculation alone. If the projects are successful long term, higher is possible.

I'm not counting on these projects being big players in 5 years, although it's possible. The big players will more likely be coins that already have market caps over $100 million, or haven't been launched yet. The main reason GEO and ZEN are attractive, is that they're so damn cheap compared to similar coins.

Buy into hate, sell into love. Buy hated coins when there are rumors of corporate partnerships, which makes people hate them even more.

Worked brilliantly with ETH (upon rumors of Ethereum Enterprise Alliance) and XRP (upon rumors of partnerships with Asian banks). I'm still holding Ripple, since I got in at 600 sat.

Don't expect the kind of gains with it that smaller cap coins will give you now, but it's probably a decent long term hold if you can get a low entry.

obvious dips is obvious in retrospect.

i'll bet most people if they attempted to 'day trade' would've sold all the moment it hit $1000 and sat around for months afterwards.

HAHAHA, obvious in retrospect only if you are dumb maybe.

Right now Ethereum is dipping, I can tell you right now it will dip to about $150, possibly more to double digits like $95

If you aren't shorting Ethereum right now and then buying the dip at $95-150 you are just plain dumb and hate money. So sorry for you and your family

Increased capital gains taxes from frequent trading must be considered. Those paying a capital gains tax of e.g. 30-40%+, need to make excellent trades for trading to pay off.

There are also huge risks involved with shorting cryptos. I asked the TradingView chat about how how the hell so many of them said they lost all their money. The common theme? They were all shorting cryptos, and the whales destroyed them.

Let's see if your prediction comes true. It seems likely, but not guaranteed, as you make it sound. Remember that many people are buying and holding ETH simply for ICO investment, so TA must be taken with a grain of salt (as always).

For those of us who got in cheap, e.g., $8, a correction all the way to $95 is easily manageable. I sold half my ETH at $400 as a hedge, but I'm holding the other half to avoid the tax implications of capital gains. I believe believe the average person using a portfolio strategy (buy pre-pump lows of innovative projects, sell exponential pumps), is massively outperforming the average active trader.  Traders may get better exits on short and medium term moves, but the most reliable way to win is to buy innovative projects super low before the swing traders get in, and hold them until hysteria hits.

If capital gains tax did not exist, I would be trading more actively using Ichimoku. But I've run the numbers, considered the odds, and would rather spend my time on other things than trying to time perfect entries and exits to compensate for increased tax load.

If this coin changes it's name I will buy some...but...Boolberry??  Huh

I clicked on this coin for no reason other than the name. That's a good sign. It's strangely evocative and sticky.

Examples of terrible brand names:
- Maidsafe
- QualiServe

Examples of great brand names:
- Dash
- Zen
- Kijiji
- Virgin

Many more in the Igor Naming Guide: https://www.igorinternational.com/process/naming-guide-product-company-names.php

According to these branding experts, lululemon got top marks as a brand name, which is in many ways similar to Boolberry.

I'm now going to research this coin and learn more, ONLY because I think the name is sticky enough to have mass appeal.

It's getting better now, finally PPY accessible in coinmarketcap  https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/peerplays/  but still not corrected details

I actually like that misleading chart (PEERPLAYS dropping off into PPY), because it makes it look like the price fell off a cliff and it's trading at a bargain. With most other coins having pumped (at least with respect to US dollars), the bargain hunters may take notice, without understanding that PPY and the older "PEERPLAYS" were different coins with different supply. [EDIT: Looks like they just updated it second after I posted this. The chart no longer shows the misleading drop off from $40]

This is my first time even using Ethereum.  It didn't make a good impression.  I was getting errors and gave up thinking it didn't work.  The Ether funds disappeared from my account when I first sent and then reappeared a short time later when the errors were happening and then when I checked later in the day they had disappeared again.  So presumably I have Bancor tokens now.

Is whatever that caused the problem in Ethereum during the ICO fixable in Ethereum or will this happen every time there is a spike in traffic or DDOS attempt?  Are any of these platforms able this kind of thing efficiently?

These growing pains are part of new technology. In this case, adoption is happening faster than the technology can keep up with. But adoption is still restricted to a select group of technically literate.

A seamless user experience is what will propel cryptos to mainstream adoption, but this requires a solid backbone: security, speed, forgiveness, integration with existing services, and effortless user interfaces.

When cryptos become truly easy to use for the average person, they will quickly gain mainstream adoption. By the time this happens, I will have mostly cashed out.

Excellent site !
My comment is regarding BAT (Basic Attention Token).
BAT values are not not updated in portfolio. Its value is 0 and
hence my portfolio shows 0 for BAT portion !

Was going to mention this too. There's an old coin that also uses the BAT ticker (Batcoin), and maybe that has prevented the new one from being updated.

Either way, Basic Attention Token is already in the top 20 for market cap, so hopefully it gets added soon.

The token sale is delayed. As has been announced for some time, it will NOT be today on May 30th. We are waiting for the third and final round of contract audits from our new partner, Consensys, before starting the token sale.

We anticipate it will take place in June. Token sale terms will be released shortly. The token sale date will be announced as soon as possible. Thank you.

These best be the cheapest ICO tokens I ever saw, jesus you lot are wasting hella time

Also, why did I have to upload and sign documents for this ICO, seems to defeat the purpose

Wow. What makes you so entitled? If I was running an ICO I wouldn't want you as an investor. You sound like a pain in the ass to deal with.

It sounds like they're trying to run a clean ICO, and that involves a delay to get everything sorted out. That's life. If you want something to throw money at now, there are plenty of scams that will gladly take your money with zero delay.
