Re: Something Awful Accounts for Bitcoin?

If I'm reading this right, anyone can just buy a gift certificate registration for you.  You could probably just get a disposable/rechargable card and have it work.

FWIW: The shutdown process requires syncing then unmounting all mounted filesystems immediately before doing a power cycle.  Regardless, you can just substitute the proper command.

Re: popular web frameworks for bitcoin development?

blockchain.info uses Coyote, so it's probably also using Tomcat, therefore is probably using Java.  Like so many other sites, it uses Twitter's Bootstrap and jQuery on the frontend.

SatoshiDice is clearly PHP.

Bitcoin MineField is served by Express, therefore is built on top of Node, which is Javascript.  The frontend uses jQuery and jQuery UI.

Re: Seattle residents are being prosecuted for their beliefs; denied 5th amendment

What an amazingly horrible headline.  Here's the events from a slightly more even-handed viewpoint:

http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2012/09/13/activists-summoned-once-again-before-a-federal-grand-jury

She's been granted immunity from prosecution.  That's a very, very different thing than being denied the 5th Amendment right against self-incrimination.  Her concern now is that she no longer has a way to not testify.

The Stranger has more coverage of the events and the actual prosecution: http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/occupy/

No can do, reselling / sublicensing of the services (which is what you'd end up doing) is prohibited under the AWS Customer Agreement:

Quote
8.5 License Restrictions. Neither you nor any End User may use the Service Offerings in any manner or for any purpose other than as expressly permitted by this Agreement. Neither you nor any End User may, or may attempt to, [...]  (d) resell or sublicense the Service Offerings.

Re: The EFF's damage to Bitcoin continues.

They don't accept bitcoin donations, but will they try to defend someone that used Bitcoin and/or accepted bitcoin donations?
Someone should ask them this question.

Very this.  The EFF isn't here to push the envelope themselves.  They're here to advocate (and sometimes provide legal assistance for) rights and free speech in the context of the internet and high tech, on the behalf of others.

It's very unlikely that they'd take a public position on bitcoin without an actual legal case.  It's disappointing, but not surprising, that they wouldn't want to be that case.

I'm upset. Anyone care to explain why the topic against TBF was deleted? This one - http://www.google.by/#q=https:%2F%2Fbitcointalk.org%2Findex.php%3Ftopic%3D115487.20

Wasn't that the one with the huge screencaps pointing out that the members of the Bitcoin Foundation have done business with each other before in other bitcoin-related ventures, and with the hilarious evidence-free accusation at the end that they're planning to create fake bitcoins and destroy the market?

This will let owners of Bitcoincard (mentioned ppl) to "write" any amounts on the cards making bitcoins out of thin air.

Please provide evidence to back the highlighted allegations.  Seems like scaremongering to me.

In addition to Bizspark, there's also MSDN and TechNet options.  TechNet Standard starts at 200 USD.

[WTS] Professional IT, IT Security & Auditing, Sysadmin, Development & More
by
Ei Cot
on 01/10/2012, 05:15:17 UTC
Thanks for your interest!  I'm an IT professional with nearly fifteen years of experience in a variety of fields.  I'm looking for some small one-off or contract work in exchange for Bitcoin.

What I've done:
  • Linux system administration with an emphasis on best practices and documentation of work
  • Security auditing and hardening of public-facing and internal servers
  • Management and coordination of developer teams
  • Management of the software development lifecycle, including transforming blue-sky brainstorming into functional software specifications, creation of simple mockups and prototypes, and actual implementation
  • Creation and maintenance of complex web-based applications in a variety of environments
  • Auditing of server performance & application scalability involving both fixed and dynamic load balancing

Some things I could do for you:
  • Help you transform that website idea into a functional specification that anyone can implement
  • Implement that functional specification
  • Review PHP, Perl, Python, Ruby and other code that others have written for best practices, security vulnerabilities and other oddities
  • Server security & performance audits
  • Web application security & performance audits
  • Setup of rock-solid server backups, on and off-site
.
What I don't like doing:
  • Skinning / basic HTML and CSS from scratch
  • Complex design work; I'm not an artist, the things I create are simple and functional
  • Working with SMF, osCommerce, Drupal and Joomla
  • Desktop support
  • Voice chat / voice support (skype, phone, etc)

I generally do work evenings, Pacific US time.  Work will only be performed once we agree on a light-weight statement of work.

Shoot me a PM to get started, or feel free to ask questions here.

For help with the first question, you should review the Wikipedia article on public-key cryptography.  The relationship between private and public keys is 1:1.

You should keep a backup of your wallet that is kept up to date as you make transactions.

Please do your homework before posting possibly damaging mis-information threads like this.

You might want to hire someone in PR or Marketing.  You should be reaching out to customers that allege problems instead of battling them on forums.  Makes you look unprofessional at first glance.  You wouldn't want newbies getting that impression, right?

Re: PHP & BAMT
by
Ei Cot
on 30/09/2012, 23:18:50 UTC
That's a very, very roundabout way to accomplish scheduled reboots.

If you really need an actual reboot, you probably should be using cron instead of creating a freaking PHP-based daemon.

Given that BAMT seems to be based on Debian, you can probably insert a cron job similar to:

Code:
* 0,6,12,18 * * * /sbin/shutdown -r now

That's a heck of a lot easier than installing PHP and manually adding a system service.  The "-r" in that command schedules a reboot, and the "now" schedules it for, well, right then and there.

Of course, if you have to reboot your server every six hours, you should probably look into the actual thing going wrong rather than just punting and rebooting the darn thing.

I have nearly fifteen years of professional-grade Information Technology and software development experience, with an emphasis on security and industry-standard best practices.  I offer a full-stack experience, providing everything from hardware to fully-managed hosting to web-based and (simple) desktop software development.  I also offer security audits of both servers (Linux) and code (PHP, Perl, Python, Ruby and more).

I'm here to offer my services, and will eventually put a more thorough ad in the proper forum.

Re: [Politics and Society] Are the members of bct rooting for Obama or Romney in US?

In the united states 2012 national elections who do you want to win? regardless of nationality and how do you think it would affect bitcoins as a currency?
Neither is more likely to make an impact on Bitcoin than the other.  The most likely thing to make the US government pay attention to Bitcoin is how it can be abused.  There are dozens, maybe hundreds of mixers, and they're prime targets for people that are doing less-than-legal things.  If the US government decides that Bitcoin is a vector for drugs or terrorism, things could get rather messy.  Neither of the two major candidates have policies that would make this scenario more or less likely to happen.

Someone needs to build a tl;dr for the valuable information in this thread.  I'm not gonna read a hundred and fourty-four pages worth of posts to find out if these delays have proven effective...
