Yes, even if they were the same I still wouldn't use crossfire as they run better solo.

I've run 5830s with 6850s and 7850s in the same machine (5830s are a real bargain)

Being able to game on one card while the other keep mining is nice.

I don't see any other way (for BTC refunds) and i don't want Dave and Tom to pay more than the actual preorder value in USD Wink

Swindlers use this term (arbitrage fraud) as a process that enables a person to obtain a Self-Liquidating Loan (money to buy equipment or investments to generate back what's owed), http://www.fraudaid.com/dictionary-of-financial-scam-terms/arbitrage.htm

$1,000,000 of pre-orders at BTC $10, later BTC rises to $16, I refund you back in $ cost of item, $1,000,000 refund for you and $600,000 for me.

I'm not suggesting that's what's going on here, just how you could obtain free funding for a FPGA farm. Wink

Depends on your electricity price, $0.09 is pretty low.

I'd need to see BTC $16 before I'd break even.

I'm leaning toward buying an FPGA. (but like everyone else wonders if I should wait to see if ASICs will turn up)

I'm beginning to think you're right, there is always some reason for shipment delay every month, and what keeps you in there is the threat of losing your place in the pre-order queue.

I could take pre-order money and buy mountains of FPGAs with it.

When eventually the sucker I mean customer wakes up and asks for their money back I can give it to them.

Off course nobody was ripped off, they got their money back, so I got a free loan, and maybe their currency depreciated a little over time, but all that matters is they got refunded.

Arbitrage scams work best when nobody feels like a victim. Wink

If the spindle is broken, you need a new fan, no amount of oil will fix it.

I'm with the others who say mini zip tie a 2500rpm fan, similar diameter to the shroud hole blowing down into the heatsink.

The Ati 5830 is pretty cheap $75/£60, knocks out as many Mh/s as a 7850, the sacrifice is power efficiency.

It makes a pretty good gaming card too.. can play Battlefield 3 1080p on Ultra

Can someone explain to me how being a third-world country results in CHEAPER electricity?

CO2 is the air you breathe out. Your global warming tax (breathing tax) is paid though your energy bills so you cannot avoid it.

If you are wondering why there are no jobs it's because energy bills and minimum wage are too high in the west for companies to be competitive.

had to replace a few fans, but no other issue

Are your fans blowing down into the cards? No air-flow over the board components would cause this.
Other than that, you can get mini RAM heatsinks off ebay.

Also happens to cards with water blocks...

Pardon my ignorance but 5830's as far as i know can only run in a dual setup for ~530 mhash

Would be keen on 5850's ??

You don't need crossfire to mine so you can run as many as you want on riser cables.

The 5850 is a better card (more efficient per Mh) but will cost you at least 25% more than a 5830.

If electricity is cheap/free, think of that as buy 4 get 1 free.  Wink

Re: HD 6770
by

IIRC the 6770 is basically a rebadged 5770 with some minor updates. They normally run quite cool.

My 6770 was running about 76c at stock. This was okay back when we were allowed to use lead in solder! But a really hot summer killed it on that damn EU lead free solder that was also killing early XBOX 360s and PS3s with "ring of death".

My 5830's ran at 60c, and my 7850's run at 50c!

Really the 6770 sells for the same price as a 5830 and that's a much faster, cooler, quieter card with no OEM driver issues.

Video of a 5830 running Battlefield 3 in 1080p Ultra 0xAA with FPS and Temp counters.

Some cards are OEM models and will only run half speed (or not at all) with AMD drivers. You need to use the driver from you card manufacturer.

Just got "OEM brown box" 7850 crossfire for Christmas and I was like WTF they run slower than my old 5830s!

After a while I figured out they were running 430/600 instead of 860/1200 and it was only fixed with the manufacturers driver disc.

The 6770 is not a good card, had one, it runs hot and dies if you get a hot summer. It too is an OEM card!

What?! I'm not saying I'm the know-all source for GPU drivers, but I've never heard of anything like that.

The 6770 was intended as an OEM ONLY RELEASE but XFX fecked up and boxed it for retail.

"6770 will not install"
>"From what I understand the 6770 is only supposed to ship to OEM's for use in Pre-builts, how did you get one from Best Buy?"
>>"Just to give everyone a heads up. I just spoke to AMD and they are not supporting the 6770 card for retail. Mark stated they have talked about releasing it to retail but have not made this step as of yet. He also checked all driver files to see if they had a driver for the 6770 and the 6750. He stated they do not have any support for these. He also checked the beta 11.4 and there is no plans to have a 6770 driver on there either."
>>>"Having just purchased this card and successfully installed it, I can say that there are drivers on the disc. One would assume the latest drivers straight from AMD would support this card, however that was not the case. I had to rollback my drivers to those from XFX's site to get the card working after I updated with AMD's most recent release."

Re: What's a proper measure of economic growth?
by
Gatorhex
on 16/12/2012, 15:44:00 UTC
$Exports - $Imports = true economic growth

GDP is a propaganda statistic. Youtube "Fuzzy Numbers"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPkTItOXuN0

So the economic growth of the planet is 0?

Let me clarify with a simple example..

China $10,000,000 exports - $4,000,000 imports = +$6,000,000 growth

USA $4,000,000 exports - $10,000,000 imports = -$6,000,000 recession/decay

Real growth is all about the trade balance between countries.

Now, if you want to destroy your export jobs you mandate an ever rising minimum wage and put ever rising taxes on energy.

This means production has to leave the country to seek cheaper labor and energy costs, thus reducing your export capacity and increasing another countries export capacity.

If anyone corners the bitcoin market with a dedicated hardware solution you could make a small change to the bitcoin protocol to bring them down and return it to the people.

In the past when anyone corners the market in anything the price collapses anyway because people seek an alternative.

"it means that bitcoins has protection on balances held at the exchange."

IF THE ABOVE WERE TRUE...

It would be a big deal for anyone who has a large amount of coins because
of the €100,000 protection European bank accounts get.

BUT THE REAL TRUTH IS HERE...

It sounds like the equivalent of getting a credit/debit card processing account.

Re: Why are savings interest rates TINY (lower than inflation) in the US?
by
Gatorhex
on 15/12/2012, 15:11:10 UTC
Because the Fed is trying to force companies like Apple to take their huge cash pile and invest it in new jobs/products or distribute it as dividends.

In effect use it or lose it.

Savers are collateral damage, but that also too helps the velocity of money, if they go out an spend it.

I would prefer they use a corporate capital reserve tax and leave savers out of this financial war.

Yes,  Bitcoin is perfect for arbitrage scamming, also beware of mining pools that keep hold of your coins.
I'm still waiting on half the coins I worked on Eligius pool in October.
Of course this thing is easier to pull off if you can pay out in 2 currencies. You always win. Wink

I not saying that this is what is going on here, just that this is how it could be done..

I'm selling pre-order Unicorns.
You can pay me in either dollars or bitcoins.
After 30days, if you are not happy waiting for your pre-order unicorn, you can request a 100% guaranteed refund.
I will refund you in whichever currency leaves me with the currency arbitrage profit.
$10,000,000 of pre-order Unicorns, bitcoin value moves 10%, that's $1,000,000 for me suckers!

It's genius, but probably illegal, only banks get away with this kind of stuff! Grin
