Re: Security: Offline vs Watching-Only

I believe it is like this:

If you are the owner in wallet properties, it's called offline.
If you are not the owner in wallet properties, it's called watching-only.

The security should be the same, but you would prefer to not create a new wallet on an online computer.

Thanks, that makes sense.

Security: Offline vs Watching-Only
by

I created an offline wallet on a offline computer and imported it as a watching-only wallet onto my live computer.  In Armory it says My Wallet (watch) under the Wallet Name column and Offline under the Security column.

On this same live computer, I create a 2nd wallet which I then used armory to delete the private keys and turn it into a 'watch-only' wallet.  This one however now says 2nd Wallet (watch) under the wallet name column  (which is expected) but says 'Watching-Only' under security.  My assumption was since both are 'watch-only' wallets, that the description under security would be the same.  Does the different security type (offline vs watching only) provide different features/security levels?  Or do they have different security type simply because one originated from an offline computer as opposed to the live computer, though they are both now in watching only mode?  Thanks.

Did HMF pre-order any KNC Neptunes?

We have two Neptunes on order from the first batch.  Q1/Q2 2014 delivery estimate.

You can ignore armory_walletID_backup.wallet.

It's only purpose is to provide some protection in case something happens while writing to armory_walletID.wallet.

wallet.dat in the \bitcoin directory is not used by Armory.

Thanks

Armory Wallet files

Hello, wondering if someone knows the answer to these two questions.

When I create a wallet in Armory, there are two related wallet files in the \Armory directory that get created as well
armory_walletID.wallet and
armory_walletID_backup.wallet

What's the different between these two files?

And the wallet.dat file in the \bitcoin director does not contain any information regarding the wallets created via Armory, correct?

Thanks

Register a second account using your other email address at Havelock to receive the shares, and then transfer them to the account you want to manage them. (look for the "xfr" link next to the asset on your accounts page)
cant be done - for unknown reason i do not get confirmation email from havelock (send to *that* mail)

best way would be to stay at cryprostock Wink

I'd check your spam/junk folder for this email account.  Sometimes registration/password reset emails end up in there.

Hello HMF unitholders,

We were able to take advantage of the sale at BFL last week and we've added 5 BFL Singles (250 GH/s total) to the HMF fund.  They were received today are now up and running, bringing our total hashing power to 3 TH/s.

Happy Mining,

Also found the offline wallet tutorial link isn't valid anymore.  Pretty sure it was up last week.

Re: What are the change addresses for?
by

I'm quite new to Electrum, and I don't understand the behavior in the last transaction.

Say I have 1 btc in the 'change address' A of Electrum, all other addresses are empty. Then I have made a transaction of 1 btc to 'receive address' B with a fee of 0.0001 btc. After that electrum shows 0.9998 btc in 'receive address' B and 0.0001 btc in 'change address' C.

I should mention that I have "use change addresses" enabled in the gui client.

What happened??? I know that 0.0001 btc was spent as a fee, but why is another 0.0001 btc transferred to another change address?

Can anyone explain it?

Found this, not sure if it helps your particular case.

What is a "Change Address", and why is it useful?
The concept of change addresses is a feature not of the Bitcoin protocol, but of a Bitcoin client. It is implemented not only in Electrum but in most Bitcoin clients, including the original "Satoshi" Bitcoin client.
How it works:
Whenever your Bitcoin client (e.g. Electrum) sends Bitcoins from your wallet's address "A" to a foreing address "B", a new change address "C" is created by Electrum and added to your wallet.
Example: Address "A" has 20 BTC. Electrum sends 9 BTC from "A" to "B". The change (20-9 = 11 BTC) is sent to the "change address" "C". For this purpose, address "C" is created by Electrum at this moment and added to your wallet.
Exception: If all the Bitcoins of "A" are sent to "B", there is no need for creating a change address "C".
Actually, Bitcoin clients can also work without change addresses. In this case, the change would be sent back to "A" instead of the new address "C".

Why the concept of "change addresses" is useful:
Using a new change address makes it more difficult for other people (by analyzing the blockchain) to track how many Bitcoins you have or where you're spending them.
It also conceals which output is the "spend" and which is the "change".

Buy in bubbles and sell after price drops.
Cheap coins for everyone else.

Buy low sell high! I like it.

There is alot of media coverage on bitcoins right now. But as soon as the media coverage is gone or turns into negative press. (Just like the inputs.io incident)
the trust in bitcoins will plummet and we are back to 100$. I cannot see into the future, nobody can.

A currency tripling in a month isn't a real currency.  To actually be used in commerce the price needs to be relatively stable (whatever the price ends up at).
