welcome back, happy to see this awesome tool being usable again for newer bitcoin versions!
the WUI is proper Smiley
a good feature: import/export all privkeys to a file

That's what I'd like to see with support for handling the wallet encryption with whatever passphrase you set.

Just curious was this bet made just to insight interest to this thread or is there basis for a possible shutdown of SR?

The bet statement was made because I wanted to add something amusing to Bets of Bitcoin, but I have no information regarding the running of the site.  This thread was started afterwards to draw attention to the bet, not the other way around.

Re: How to use 2-factor auth on mtgox, even without a smartphone

Or use the google authenticator app on an offline computer.

the clock on an offline computer will vary over time, which will make your otp give a bad result.  update the time manually if the otp is gives doesn't work.

I tried to set 2fa on mtgox use this method via offlline computer (mini winxp on hirens boot usb) and get wrong otp. I had set  time and date same in second and get different otps. Online (same comp as mtgox session) generated otp well matched.

any advice, what is going wrong? thanks in advance!

This is most likely the clock creep issue.  The OTP only lasts for 30 seconds, so if the clock is wrong it will not be calculated for the correct time as observed by Mt. Gox.  The best solution is to use a system connected to a time (NTP) server, otherwise you'll have to update the clock manually.

The black (and grey) market site will be closed permanently by 12:01am UTC, 1/7/2013 (or 7/1/2013 for Americans).

It does not matter whether it is shutdown by law enforcement (DEA, FBI, whatever) or whether Silk Road staff shut it down and returned any funds owed to users or even if they absconded with whatever BTC they had left in the site when they ran. The site moving to a different hidden/darknet address does not count as shutting the site down. Shutting the site down means all operations have ceased.

Opening date: Sept. 19, 2012
Bet deadline: June 29, 2013 end of day Eastern Time
Event date: July 1, 2013 end of day Eastern Time
Category: Other

I expect this one will simultaneously amuse and annoy people.

Ill take this bet for 10 BTC To Any Takers. In favor of it not shutting down.

That's easy, go to the bet page and place your bet.

Looks like a great service. How big is the userbase now?

Not many, but it's early days and hopefully it will get more use in the future.

BTW, I decided to test the Mumble client while piping it through Tor.  It works using both the SOCKS or HTTP proxies, but the latency is nasty with noticable pauses before it is heard.  Like around a second or more.  Conclusion: don't bother.

Re: Burlington Iowa scammer, Chris Edwards / Ralph__ / LadyPeace

Arij has stated that he believes that this scammer may also be a Silk Road vendor and has mentioned "using kids" to launder BTC/USD.  While it is possible that the Facebook profile is that of the scammer/dealer, it is also possible that it is one of these kids.  Either way, the profile should be viewed as suspicious.

My logs of the court proceedings are now online.  Note there are two logs because danieldaniel had to make a second channel to allow LadyPearl to state his/her side of the story (she was not registered and could not speak in the main court channel).

The main #bitcoin-court log is here.

The alternate ##bitcoin-court log is here.

The timestamps are in my local time, which is +11:00 UTC.  I have made a note of that at the top of each file.  Otherwise there have been no changes to the content (including one comment of mine which was not sent to the second channel).

If you want to be part of our community re-building effort, please hop into #bitcoin-aus on Freenode.
This is the most active Australian Forum, and we all would love to say hi! Smiley

Already logged in and I intend to be at the meeting too.  I'll also be bringing copies of my GPG key fingerprint so people can confirm that in person and we can get some GPG key signing done.

Anyway, the only thing in common between MrTggr (the primary BP admin) and CryptoXChange that I am aware of is that both are in Australia.  So is SomeoneWeird (the secondary BP admin) and so am I.

CryptoXChange has a postal address in Orange, NSW (approx. 200km west of Sydney), MrTggr is in Canberra, SomeoneWeird is in Melbourne and I'm in Melbourne too.

Someone accused me of being a CX "shill" https://btct.co/security/BITCOINRS. I havent spoken to Ken for months and its unfounded accusations like this which probably caused him to shut it down, along with other issues. Not saying thats why but it doesn't help.

If people keep hounding honest businesses out of bitcoin its a shame.

Yes, but we're all in the same country so we must know each other and be colluding against the rest of the world.  It's a vast conspiracy.  Nevermind the fact that there's 23 million of us spread over a land mass about four fifths the size of the United States, it's still a conspiracy of convicts!

Whereas what actually happened, as I understand it, was that Ken met MrTiggr online in #bitcoin-aus when CryptoXChange was being built and engaged MrTiggr and the Bitcoin Police of the day to do some pentesting and security auditing of the website.  This resulted in their being confident enough to list the site as trusted.

It's also worth pointing out that for all the trouble CXC has had, they're not simply cutting and running with whatever money or BTC were in people's accounts.  My own issues with them, for example, were always in the nature of competence rather than trustworthiness.

Aren't cryptoxchange and bitcoinpolice virtually identical?

No.  I think you might be confusing Bitcoin Police with something else, possibly Mr. Bitcoin.

Nope. I'm pretty sure CryptoXchange was not only listed on Bitcoin Polices site as a highly trusted partner, but the adresses of some Bitcoin Police members and CryptoXchange owners were remarkably similar. Of course, and im sure this is totally accidental, the old Bitcoin Police site was replaced by a new one about 2 days ago or so. Still...remarkably convenient, if one thinks about it.

As far as I'm aware the new Bitcoin Police site (bitcoinpolice.org) is unrelated to CryptoXChange.  Actually, there's a greater connection between Bitcoin Police and Mt. Gox, just have a look at the whois records for bitcoinpolice.org and bitcoinpolice.net.

Disclaimer:  I am a moderator on the new Bitcoin Police forum.

The data from the old site was available a few days ago, I'll see if I can get a copy.  I didn't archive it because there wasn't much in it of interest.

Anyway, the only thing in common between MrTggr (the primary BP admin) and CryptoXChange that I am aware of is that both are in Australia.  So is SomeoneWeird (the secondary BP admin) and so am I.

Little Matthew Ouimet is a sad little sack who is angry at society due to his debilitating Crohn's disease, so he takes it out on the world by scamming people online (and cheating at video games).

Crohn's Disease is a terrible thing.  My mother has it, my uncle had it, I've been tested for it (that wasn't fun), another friend of the family has it.  I'm well aware of how horrible it can be.

I'm also well aware that it's no excuse for being a scamming little shite.

I've had 3 associates who frequently use MtGox and SR receive calls from the ATF.

Could this be substantiated?

If the calls were actually letters, then yes.  Otherwise who knows or cares.  Silk Road is just like any other criminal enterprise: the stupid and/or cocky ones will get caught and the smart ones won't (they're also the ones that will stay out of trouble, but for their vices).  So really who cares?

It sounds sketchy and I'm sorry you had that experience. It would be better if local bitcoins had some sort of feedback system.

It does have a feedback system.  In addition to that it can be linked to an OTC identity if you have a Bitcoin address linked to the handle.  A Local Bitcoins profile page will list the feedback from the trades arranged there and the feedback submitted through the OTC system.

I have no proof other than what 3 SR users have told me directly, all of whom used MtGox to both buy and cash out.  That is all.

If they're so stupid as to trade both ways without at least mixing it, then frankly they brought this on themselves.  As others have mentioned, it's equally likely that they've cut corners in other ways and not protected themselves from discovery.  They are, essentially, the definition of the "low-hanging fruit" that the relevant law enforcement organisation has been able to pluck.

Bets of Bitcoin: The ALP or Coalition will win the Australian Federal Election
by
Hasimir
on 20/10/2012, 09:02:44 UTC
I've made two new statements on the outcome of the Australian Federal Election which is due next year.  Those statements are that:

1) The ALP will form government following the election.
2) The Liberals/Nationals Coalition will form government following the election.

Although one statement most likely means the other loses, I decided to make both statements to cover certain very minute chances of other outcomes.  My reasons for doing so are in this blog post.
