Re: [GUIDE] GridSeed GC3355 5 Chip Setup/power/windows/linux/rpi by UnicornHasher

I'm planing my Gridseed farm setup. Can someone tell me if this will work? I want to attached 20x Gridseed to 1x RasPi. I will be using 2x Roswell (RHB-500) 10 port USB hubs. But I would also like to use a usb wifi adapter. Will the following non powered USB splitter work? Assuming I hook up the the wifi adapter and 1x 10 port usb hub to 1 USB 2.0 port on the RasPi. The other 10 port usb hub will plug directly into the 2nd usb 2.0 port on the RasPi. My alternative would be to get a wireless bridge and hook up a Ethernet hub. But my preference would be to use a mini wifi adapter.

10 Port USB Hub (Powered):
http://www.amazon.com/Rosewill-10-Port-High-Speed-RHB-500/dp/B004F38WT4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1395598321&sr=8-1&keywords=roswell+usb+hub

3 Port USB Splitter (Non-Powered):
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-USB-2-0-Hi-Speed-4-Port-Splitter-Hub-For-PC-Notebook-/370896703254?pt=US_USB_Cables_Hubs_Adapters&hash=item565b2a8f16

Get a 13-port hub and a 10-port hub, and don't use the splitter. Or get two 13-port hubs, in case you want to connect a few more donuts later. The goal is to keep max 2 levels of daisy-chained hubs, and any hub with >7 ports already has 2 levels inside.

Thanks can you recommend a 13 port hub that works with Raspberry Pi?

Hi Milkman, Ihave been running 12 of this..... the 13the port I have plugged in my pi.

Only 35 running right now and 60 of the total 80 i will have. Need more barrel plugs the chinese vendor screwed up  Sad

Total   16,595.46 KH/s   Shares:1,760,128/14,464/0/0/0

35 gridseeds @ 850 + 8 r9 280x's

Nice work chap, will be good once they are all powered. What controller are you using?

Also what causes the lockups and need for reseting the current miners, is it in the chips themselves or the interface circuitry.
The miners itself, as well as the usb hub are definitely not the problem. I've connected them to a Raspberry Pi, running cpuminer it's rocksolid!
No lockups at all. Right now I'm testing this with cgminer which looks very promising.

Another nice thing to know:
First I used the original PSU's. With 2 PSU's and 10 miners the complete system was running 90Watt @ 850Mhz (scrypt without fans).
I swapped the two PSU's for a platinum rated 450Watt PSU. Now the complete system is running 70Watt @ 850Mhz (scrypt without fans).

Thanks for the info, good to know as would not want to put out all that money for a 15Mhs unit
and have the same lockup issues as the individual miners. As for the power supply maybe the power
supply does not have enough balls for the peak demand current that 10 of the miners draw?

Script only with no fans, ONE china power supply works just fine for 10 miners. Using a Pi and works great.
Ditch the Jack controller or wiibox and get a Pi. remember, script only only uses 1 amp per 10!
-Bobby

Interesting reading this amazing how the better PSU gets even better energy savings! Anyone have opinion of the best PSU to order would be appreciated.

I know it depends on if you dual mine, but please let me know what would be your first choice. (PS I am looking at ordering the cablez custom ATX loom for these)

That was the point of my post!!!
Its using ONE AMP!!! around 70 watts, what kind of saving is there using a top of the line P/S? not much!
Sure if it was burning thru 8 amps then sure go for it.
-Bobby

Thanks bobby, just interested in going over to a safer, stable and more compact PSU using the cablez new loom.

Overall I am trying to make this set as compact as possible using less stuff and much less wiring.

PS I know its miniscule but saving a few watts is a bonus!

PS. anyone have a top choice of PSU/recommendations, just read over on the Gridseed post a 30W saving on using a Platinum PSU over the supplied PSU!. Any advice appreciated.

Ahh I can imagine how quiet its it without the fans! Good work on the modifications all!

My fans are going for a little longer and watching from a distance.

Worldly did you notice a drop in power since the fans have been snipped?(in watts)

I am watching the cablez post closely with a change of PSU on the cards power to all miners with one plug sounds sweet! (as well as the PI upgrade)

Thanks very much Mudflap, that is just what I needed. Smiley   I will tweak the final measurements a bit and issue a quote request with the manufacturer. Stay tuned.

Glad to be of help, don't forget my name when I order!!!!  Tongue

@ADutchGamer - you read my mind. Smiley  Here is my modular cable design for ATX powering of gridseed miners.

I have pretty much finalized the design except for the actual lengths needed. I could really use some help on that from anyone who has these units. I need to know approximately how long 5 units are end to end similar to how they would be in a spotswood case and also how far apart the individual plugs on the units are (pitch).

Hope this helps, PS I will join the queue for a cable. (running 12 miners, Contoller/PI and USB hub)

After seeing space on the PSU and a having a 13 usb hub I just purchased two more miners today, so going to run 12 in total, lets see how the controller takes it.

Will report back.

Just a little positive note lads, I decided to purchase two more Gridseed miners for my own 10 miner rig and after a few messages Alex managed to get me a couple at a reasonable price from his stock.

I was going to have them delivered but after further communication I realised I was a short drive around the motorway so I drove to him and collected paying with cash.

Generally a nice chap with lots of input, in my opinion a trusted one, I have passed on his details to my friends whom are looking at purchasing the gridseed miner setups for them to consider.

The only negative was tempting me with more products! I resisted and walked away only spending what I set out to.

Thanks mate, hope to deal again soon.

My 10 linked to the controller reboot once every hour-ish, this is something Jack is testing the new firmware on which is soon to be released.

Funnily enough they seem to be getting better by the day, speeds are slightly up and much more stable on my pool.

I am looking at buying two more mining hubs to make 12 and hopefully run those through the the PSU's and one controller.

Even if you have no intention of mining BTC, make sure the BTC address and worker is 'real/live' one. Mine would not start hashing when I put a dummy address and worker.

TBH I set mine all up and its hashing away nicely, (one unit has gone down but a un-plug , plug back in sorted that) I only notice the reboot once I look at the logs, which seems to have 1-2 min downtime. Obviously its automatically re-joining the pool. I know loosing a minute or so every hour will add up, that's why I cannot wait till FW the update.

I know some of the lads are working on a rasp-pi version of the controller over on litecointalk may be of interest to you?

Hi Wolfy la3m is the kit supplied by lightning asic (its supplled with 10 miners, PSU, controller, leads etc) here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=421921.0

Where did you get yours? what was supplied?

Seems to be running fine just a reboot every 45 mins or so, which is waiting for an update as far as I know......
