Hello

My btc wallet is still in the process of syncing.
It's nearly done, just over 2k to get through.

Trouble is, it keeps stopping syncing.
Then, when I re-launch it, I get the interface without the block info, sometimes.

I had a google about for the answer, but could not really get anywhere.

I restarted and opened the client again, and it starting

Here's a picture of what I get, just to save rambling.

Re: Assistance required regarding overheating computer and wallet syncing

If the shutdowns aren't a direct result of heat, it could be a RAM module or hard drive failure (both of these are cheap & easy fixes, though), especially if the components are regularly running hot.

So long as you have the wallet file on the hard drive (and I wouldn't trust that hard drive until the problem's figured out) and it's created the priv-pub key to give you an address to receive at, there's no risk in sending coins to those addresses.
Hi Kluge

The shut downs have stopped now that I have got a technician to strip down the machine and give it a good clean.
I appreciate your help though. Smiley

Re: Locked out of bitcoin wallet, can I get another wallet?

The weird behaviors can happen if you clone a wallet and use it on 2 different computers.

This is mainly because QT wallets have a default pool of 100 pre-generated addresses (the 100 next addresses it will use as change or show you when you click on "new address" are pre-generated). Each time you use up an address from that pool, QT creates a new (random) one to keep a 100 pool.

So if you clone a wallet to another computer and use both, you'll have the impression that they are syncrhonized, until you reach the point where you used up all 100 addresses from the "common" pool, and they begin to use random address from the "fresh" 100 pool each one will have created on his side.

What you are doing here is different. You just backed up a wallet, and created a fresh new one, not expecting that they behave the same way.
So don't be afraid about that warning.

Also, you cannot specify the wallet.dat filename when running QT, so you'll have to rename/copy/move your new wallet before copying back the locked old one (and renaming it wallet.dat if necessary), before next password cracking session.

To learn more, you may simply search in this sub for material about QT wallet. Wink

Hi Kouye

I haven't backed up my wallet yet, because I am afraid I will mess it up.

Also, I have noticed that my wallet just closes itself, and when I re-open it, the block chain sometimes does not show on the bottom of the interface. Like, the interface does not always show the green bar which shows status of syncing.

Thanks

In trying to familarise myself with btc wallet, so that I am not asking so many questions, I started reading this https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Wallet#Bitcoin_Qt

I created a second bitcoin wallet today, by going to the bitcoin folder, removing the wallet.dat that was there to another location, and renaming it. (I also copied it onto two flash drives so I have a backup)
I opened the client again, as described in the guidance I received above.

I am querying, though, because, when I read the page linked above, it said the following:

It is intended that a wallet be used on only one installation of Bitcoin at a time. Attempting to clone a wallet for use on multiple computers will result in "weird behavior"[2].

I'm not cloning a wallet for another computer, just creating one to put my new btc in, as the old wallet is locked due to lost passphrase.

Can I just confirm that, this is ok, and also, that when I want to view the original wallet (still trying to put passwords in the hope it opens it) will I just go to the file I renamed, and put it back in the btc folder?
There will be two wallet data files in there now, one for each btc wallet.

Oh, and if anyone can point me to some general help information on qt wallet for me to read, I would be grateful, as I am struggling to find it online.

Thanks
Thanks

Just popped in to say my ltc wallet is synced now, and the coins are safely in there.
The btc wallet is still syncing, but I am sure the coins will be in there once its done.

Thanks again for your support. Smiley

Yes you can try to import the private key in blockchain.info it is really easy (go to advanced, and copy/paste the private key there) ...

That is the simplest way, use blockchain.info
Thanks.
I have never learnt about all the techy stuff there is with bitcoin.
Im not a natural techie.
I guess I shied away from it.

I've got both wallets running and in the process of syncing.
So, does that mean, that the coins will appear in the wallets once they are synced?
Thanks

You will see your balance update + the incoming transaction when you synchronize your bitcoin-qt wallet.
But the coins are already at your bitcoin address (you checked at blockchain.info, blockchain.info is always synced), just your bitcoin-qt does not know it yet.
Hi thanks for bearing with me, you've helped loads.

As long as wallet is encrypted securely, you can push it to any cloud service, too (just rename the file not to hint about what it is), or just print the private keys and hide them under your bed.
My point was : don't rely exclusively on a usb stick as a safe backup.
Hi

You have been really helpful.

Hi Margaret's Dream

I know the wallets are not yet synced, but, back in April, when i bought two btc, they appeared in my wallet, as soon as I transferred them from my online wallet at bitbargain.
Could the coins have got 'stuck' somehwere?

Thanks.

You had the bitcoin-qt synced back in April. Today transaction you made has 21 confirmations at blockchain.info, it means in your bitcoin-qt must be downloaded all blocks (might remain 21 undownloaded blocks) so you can see this transaction + balance update

Synchronize your wallets on your computer, both Litecoin-qt and Bitcoin-qt

Hello Pand, and Margaret's dream.

Here's links to screenshots of the pages that appear when i clicked on TXID in my btc and ltc wallet, but why no coins in my pc wallet?
Thanks for bearing with me though, I appreciate it.

You cant send Bitcoins to Litecoins address and vice versa.
Bitcoin address start with 1xxxxxx
Litecoin address start with Lxxxxxx

Hi

I didn't send btc to ltc wallet, or vice versa.
How come my wallets are still empty, given the info on those screenshots?
Thanks

Should I send a screenshot of these pages, or is that unsafe.
Sorry for more questions.

Thanks for bearing with me. I hate not knowing what I am doing.

You can post here your address and/or the transaction id so we can check. It's safe noone can have access to your coins with those informations.

Maybe you can show the transaction ID?
Did it get confirmed?
Hi,

On the bitcoin blockchain info, theres a blue bar which says 21 confirmations. It doesn't say when it was confirmed.

On the litecoin explorer page (the thing you get when you click txid) it doesn't say whether it was confirmed or not.
Does this mean its confirmed? and should the coins be in?

Should I send a screenshot of these pages, or is that unsafe.

which alternative backup method?
by
Primrose
on 29/11/2013, 22:03:23 UTC
I do have a question though. Will a 4 gig flash drive be able to hold a wallet backup or two?

It depends on how much transactions and addresses it contains, but most likely you'll be able to store 1000 wallets at least on such a key  Wink
Keep in mind usb sticks tend to have a very short life span, though, consider other backup methods too.

Hi

Would you be able to suggest other ways of backing the wallets up please?
Do you mean a cd? I've copied stuff onto cd before, and many times, been unable to get onto it due to dodgy disks or something.

I'm not tech savvy, I just got into bitcoin in a small way, like a way of gambling I guess.
I only have one transaction on two wallets and two transactions on another.

Thanks in appreciation.

Many thanks

It's most likely your bitcoin client. To reassure yourself, check out the listing on blockchain.info for the address that is supposed to receive bitcoins.
Hi

Thank you.
The address on blockchaininfo does have my personal long string of letters and numbers.
 Smiley

What do you mean?
Hi, sorry, I am a newbie and a bit confused.

The address on the blockchaininfo page is the same as the address in my wallet.

Please could you tell me when the coins will appear in my computer wallets?

Appreciated.

Re: Lost passphrase for wallet, but have the private keys - how do I resolve?

You sure you have private keys and not addresses?

Address (note the begins with one and is generally shorter than a private key):
14CD3Ra5yMjWaEA3HTX5nAqvYb8sSjMheJ

Private Key (one format could be in an alternate form):
5KEWNTr5Jsk4H147KkNE2NZTg9zXESU5m6rmibfJQMvMswL6WiZ

If you have private key.
1) Don't share it with anyone.  Access to private key = ownership for all practical intents and purposes.  If you give someone the private key so they can help and they steal your coins they are probably gone.
2) As indicated above you can import the private key into any wallet, even a new QT client wallet, an eWallet, or a different client and gain access to the funds.

If you have the address not the private key then you have nothing. Addresses are public knowledge.  The private key is what allows the owner (and nobody else) to spend/move coins.

Hi everyone

Thanks for your replies.
I really appreciate all of your input.
I am learning here, so it's all good.
I have a 34 digit/letter long string of numbers and letters, so, it looks as if I still have a wallet with a glass door, where I can see my coins but not get at them.

Please could you tell me how to access the private key?
I have another bitcoin wallet, and this time I have the passphrase written in several places, electronically and the good olde fashioned pen and paper way.

How could I see my private key in the wallet that is not locked?

Thanks

Hi

I posted elsewhere that I lost my passphrase for one of my btc wallets, which had two coins in.

I think I have found the private keys for those coins, so, is there anyway I can recover the coins please?

Please could someone show me what to do.
Thanks
