It's global money that you can give to anyone through the internet.

It's Paypal without Paypal.

Re: Who is playing the stonewalling game? Or is it something else..

Have a look at the bitcoin users map:
http://i.imgur.com/WfNa4.png

It might be that we nearly exhausted the supply of early adopters in Europe and USA. Now we either have to establish a real market so the early majority can join in to buy goods for Bitcoins, or we can hope that the Asian press (mainly in Japan, China, India) notices Bitcoin thus drawing their early adopters in.

Re: Macaraja SAS - Schnauze voll, hab' sie angezeigt
by

- Kauft Waren

Re: Best way to pay with BTC in person
by
Rocketfella
on 29/06/2011, 11:12:19 UTC
Since I don't live in the USA and won't have internet access or even a laptop with me when I visit Meze Grill, I came up with this plan to pay using bitcoins without any hassles:

You just need to bring a USB flashdrive that has two things on it:
- a wallet with a bit more money that you think you will spend there
- a .txt with the address of one of your private wallets

When you pay, you give him the flash drive, he takes out his payment and transfers the remaining bitcoins to your private wallet.

However, depending which OS he uses, plugging in other people's flash drives might come with the risk of infecting his computer, so maybe he won't accept this form of payments. For this case you could have a backup plan:

Put the small wallet and the .txt in an encrypted archive, upload it (e.g. in your public dropbox), create a shortened URL for the archive, write down the URL + password on a piece of paper and give it to him as payment.

Re: Solution: How to shift the decimal
by

Given the recent events I think we should postpone the shift.  Wink

After some considerations I want to revise parts of my original idea. Your criticism convinced me that we should never change the meaning of BTC. I now agree that using SI prefixes when necessary seems to be the best choice. (m should be enough, using u was a bit too optimistic on my side).

Thank you for your criticism, it really improved my views on the issue!  Smiley

Re: The Bitcoin Establishment Plan: How to talk about Bitcoins properly

Maybe you'll end up having your block chain on your personal server / NAS and all your devices just connect to that to verify their transactions. For people who don't have their own servers, there will be public ones from trusted authorities like the CCC or the several PirateParties.

Re: Bitcoin in Ubuntu's Software Center? (App Store)
by

Is it even allowed to charge for open source software in Ubuntu's Software Center? All the pay-for-it apps I found there were closed source.

Now that you mentioned it, it would be excellent if you could use Bitcoins to pay in Ubuntu's Software Center. I'm currently considering buying Braid, but I haven't found the time to figure out Ubuntu's payment methods. Also, I want to buy on the Android market using Bitcoins and I want a pony!

Re: POLL: Which OS do you use?

Mac OS X is based on BSD... so which should we pick?

Yes, and BSD and Solaris are both Unix so pick (other) since I did not list Unix.
Seriously, what's the point in playing stupid? It should be obvious which choice is for you if you use a Mac, but even if it isn't: My first post says "if you don't know, don't answer the poll".

Bitcoin in Ubuntu's Software Center? (App Store)
by
Rocketfella
on 28/06/2011, 12:40:19 UTC
Why is the bitcoin client not featured in Ubuntu's Software Center? (That's Ubuntu's Linux repository for free open source software and App Store for proprietary software that you have to pay for).

Linux users are not used to hunting down an app on the web and risking installing something bad, getting it from the trusted software center would be much better. Given that Bitcoin is open source it should be possible to publish it there for free.

Huh, looks like the large market share makes Ubuntu a big target. I guess I'll do my Bitcoin transactions in BSD from now on: same security as Linux, but less attractive to thieves since nearly nobody uses it...

POLL: Which OS do you use?
by

Some discussions about security made me wonder which OS most people use. If you use multiple Operating Systems, choose your favorite one. If you don't know, don't answer the poll.

Re: Enough with the elitist crap
by
Rocketfella
on 27/06/2011, 12:12:18 UTC
Bitcoin is not just for Linux users
Think about whether you fancy yourself as part of the "technological ruling elite". Bitcoin has nothing to do with any OS. All people should be able to freely use and enjoy this technological advancement. Different OS's represent different user groups, and those groups may differ from you in many ways. They probably differ in technical expertise from yourself. The solution isn't to make them just like you....
I disagree. Bitcoin is in its early stages and not idiot proof at all. Currently, we only have the core functionality: sending coins from your computer to somebody else. All the convenience functions like security are missing and whoever wants to use Bitcoins right now needs to understand that it's her own responsibility to keep them safe.
You need to understand the average computer user here: To them, having an insecure Windows machine is no big deal: It doesn't matter that their email account got hacked and is sending spam because they used an insecure password, they just get a new email address with another insecure password. It doesn't matter that their computer becomes part of a botnet and gets a lot of malware thus running slower and slower: The average computer user will just say "Well, computers get slower over time, I just have to buy a new one or hand mine over to my neighborhood geek to fix it". Also, it doesn't matter if their HDD breaks. They don't have backups, but the files on their computer weren't important to them anyways and all their important holiday photos are on facebook anyways.

Now, the important thing here is that Bitcoin is different from all these other problems: Contrast it to email: The whole point of email is to allow you to communicate. If your account gets cracked and is used for spam, you can create another email address and continue with what it's about: communication.
The point of Bitcoin is to move money around. The really big difference is that getting hacked here actually destroys the whole point of Bitcoin since it's actually a loss to you: It's not like "Oh, my computer is slow, I'll just get it fixed", if your wallet gets stolen it's not possible to just create a new one: You actually lost that money and no friendly neighborhood geek can fix that for you.

What I'm trying to say is that AT THE MOMENT Bitcoin is not suitable for your average "I use Windows and I don't care that it's insecure" user. Because Bitcoin is in it's early stages, any serious business with it should only be done in a secure environment, namely a secure OS. If anything, for convenience you should only keep a very small amount of Bitcoins on your Windows machine, but not more than you can afford to lose.

I think that in the future, Bitcoin will become fool proof; the average user can just use an online wallet in combination with a RSA token, just like online banking works right now. But we aren't there yet and saying "Don't be elitist, every idiot should be using Bitcoins today!" does more harm than good.

By the way, using Linux is no big deal: even a chicken can install it if you place enough seeds on the ENTER key and you can just install it parallel to Windows: When you turn on your computer you'll get a little selection window where you can choose to either start Windows or Ubuntu. Also, during install, Ubuntu offers you to encrypt your Ubuntu partition, which is exactly what you want to keep your money safe. Use Windows for your pocket money and Ubuntu for your savings account.

Re: Bitcoins Handeln!?
by
