I know my deposit address and payout address but I think I lost the private key to the payout address...am I shit out of luck?

I may have access to the address I used to send to the deposit address, but I'm not sure.

Is there any way to prove ownership of account and then change the payout address to one I do own?

Why does bitcoinary.com redirect to localbitcons? I hadn't followed either site since their founding, but I thought they were separate bit-businesses.

We need to set up a bitcoin short and market it to journalists so they can put their money where their mouth is, instead of merely spouting their next misinformed theory without consequence

Re: Bitstamp requiring verification for BTC withdrawal?

How is it legal to announce a terms of service change without asking users to a)accept new terms, or b)withdraw money without verification and close account? If you put bitcoins into bitstamp under an old ToS, what if they just suddenly changed the ToS to include a 10% daily holding fee? Without telling you? Ridiculous.

If stability is considered a valuable aspect of a fledgling currency, then that value would drive its demand, and would unravel its stability.

Re: Add tags, comments, properties to .dat files

Thanks, this looks helpful for Mac users.

I did some more sleuthing for Windows users like myself, and it looks like there are a few options that aren't quite what I was looking for, but are close:

Shell Tools
http://www.moonsoftware.com/shelltools.asp
Relevant feature: "File note", which creates a txt file with duplicate file name for entering in comments.

TagFolder
http://virtual-protect.com/tagfolder.aspx
Features a Windows Explorer shell extension that lets you right click--->tagfolder--->assign tags. Only supported on 32 bit systems.

Elyse
http://silkwoodsoftware.com/index.html
Features an external file manager system based on tagging. Not quite what I was looking for, that is, a tag/comment option that is "sticky" to the file, but maybe this works for some people.

The -wallet= option looks promising, especially if there's an equivalent GUI option (eventually) that eliminates the need to search %APPDATA% and start messing around with renaming wallet.dat's. I think Armory at least lets you add a brief "nickname" tag to a particular wallet.dat, whilst in the Armory GUI. It certainly isn't a critical issue, but in the spirit of making the original bitcoin wallet grandma friendly I think it would be a big step. I know I've already corrupted a few (empty) wallets by accidentally renaming them while bitcoin qt was running. D'oh!

Wallet files must be named "wallet" (.dat) in order for bitcoin to read it on startup, so the few viruses out in the wild searching for obscure virtual currencies will have no problem finding the file, regardless of comment tags. Remotely uploading the file and sending it to the attacker, however, on top of keylogging the encryption key, that's a bit more difficult.

I often do this to other types of files, ie. .doc , but it does not seem to be supported on .dat. I am interested in a way to add such details to wallet.dat files in order to organize amongst them. I think this would be very helpful in identifying a wallet.dat file by bitcoin balance or by its designation (cold storage, spending wallet) without having to actually run bitcoin. At least, much better than merely giving the wallet.dat's different file names.

Of course drug dealers don't want drugs legalized. DPR claimed he wasn't just a simple dealer but rather some ideological crusader for a better tomorrow (by which he meant: anarcho-capitalism, his idea of utopia). He wasn't only selling drugs remember, but also malware, forged documents, he experimented with selling weaponry, etc ...

While I would question DPR for arguing against legalization (if he indeed said that) on the basis of some "holy crusade" against narcs everywhere, ultimately, his efforts to bring a viable online drug market to the masses have been highly successful (until today), and prove that such a possibility can be a reality. As long as you don't post real-identity email addresses, that is.

And what's wrong with forged documents? Or weapons?

I found DPR's altoid account, but I don't see the silk road advert post dated January 29th, 2011. The earliest post is from February 25th, 2011, and is about running bitcoind on Debian...

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=3905;sa=showPosts;start=40

I suspect DPR deleted the post (wouldn't you?) and the FBI found it by requesting logs from bitcointalk admins.

Theymos, can you confirm?

Even if he could confirm, he is probably under restriction not to.
I thought this was the post they are referencing? https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=47811.msg568744#msg568744

Somehow, I'm seeing tremendous increase of popularity of forest sightseeing Wink

What an awesome thread!  You guys have a ton of great ideas.  Has anyone seen Silk Road yet?  It's kind of like an anonymous amazon.com.  I don't think they have heroin on there, but they are selling other stuff.  They basically use bitcoin and tor to broker anonymous transactions.  It's at http://tydgccykixpbu6uz.onion.  Those not familiar with Tor can go to silkroad420.wordpress.com for instructions on how to access the .onion site.

Let me know what you guys think

So here we go, first Bitcoin drug store.
We're going into deep water faster than i thought then.

I wonder how long will it take for govs to start investigating Bitcoin.

Yeah that's it. So I guess they didn't need logs, just the indelible quote function. Silly Ross.

By the way - I'm amazed at how many people are surprised that a drug dealer with extreme anarcho-capitalist tendencies turned out to be not a swell guy! Imagine that!

And what are you, a moderate? Enjoy having no soul.

Thoughts on FREEDOM
July 5, 2010 at 11:32pm

In light Independence Day, I have been inspired to write down my thoughts on freedom, about a page in length. I hope they will stimulate YOUR thoughts, which I would most enjoy hearing.

What does it mean to be free? This word has been used to describe many things, including feelings, states of being, political and social arrangements, mental states, and physical states. Like something beyond the power of words to describe, freedom exists, but only as it occurs to someone experiencing it. Is it possible for someone locked in a cage to be freer than someone who isn’t? What if they are free from limiting beliefs and can imagine experiences without limits, while the other limits themselves to a prison of dull routines? Can freedom stand up to inter-personal comparisons, or is it a wholly personal experience?

Because of its vague nature, it is useful to make further distinctions. One way to identify freedom is by what one is free from. For example, social freedom could describe freedom from limitations imposed by others. Physical freedom could be freedom from physical restraint either imposed by others or by nature. Personal freedom could describe freedom from beliefs one may have about one’s self, others, and nature that limit what one believes is possible. Always, freedom arises in the absence of limitation. When someone is not limited by others, their physical environment, lack of knowledge or skill, or their own beliefs about what is possible; it is natural for them to expand how they express themselves in the world until the next barrier to their self-expression is reached.

One’s limitations can be difficult to identify because they are not always in plain view, especially the self-imposed ones but also the ones imposed by others and nature. For example, death and taxes are widely agreed upon to be inevitable, but are they? While one may have a choice in how they respond to external limitations, this does not negate their existence. Death and taxes are still real and observable, but inevitable? This is an interpretation. It is an extrapolation from the past in an attempt to predict the future, is not the truth and therefore limits what is possible.

That being said, it is my observation that far too much attention is directed, by people in general, toward limitations that arise out of a lack of skill or knowledge that could be better directed toward eliminating self-imposed limitations and one’s beliefs about seemingly inevitable external limitations. This is understandable because, for limitations in skill or knowledge, the problem, solution, and benefit are easy to see and predict. For example, I know I will have more freedom if I know how to play the piano and that all I need to do is learn to play and practice. However, the solution to and benefit of ridding one’s self of a belief such as “I’m shy” or “telepathy is impossible” are not so apparent. Imagine how rich and fulfilling your life could be, well beyond learning a new skill, if you could let go of the beliefs you have that limit you and live your life to its fullest potential. Imagine what could be accomplished and experienced.

Are you free? Yes and no. Freedom is a relative and unquantifiable thing. The question is, “How can I be freer?” and the answer to that depends on YOU. For me, I could be freer by letting go of beliefs like “life is hard,” “if you want something done right you should do it yourself,” “why try, I’ll probably fail” and so on. I could also be freer by creating and acquiring more resources that allow me to express myself in bigger and broader ways, both physical in form and in the form of relationships.

Let Independence Day be a reminder to us that we live in a most unique time, and are freer, as a generation, than any that has come before us. Let us be thankful for our freedom, and build a world where we, and the generations that follow us, will be freer than any that have come before!
