Re: Running drivers off a computer?

I've done this in the pass.

the ATI driver should be already install, the only thing you just need is the miner.

Most miners don't required you to install it.

So just get a bunch of 128MB Flash drives load the miner and an autorun file and connect to each computer. Then you will able to mine with all the GPU on each computer.

My dear friend... I am asking about running drivers off the computer, not mining off the computer. Very different. I already know how to mine off computers. It's about running the drivers that's causing me problems, because the computers do not have the drivers already installed in them.

Anyway, it appears that it is impossible to do so, unless someone has really done it before.

Why not just run your asics on your home PC?  They're safer there, can run 24/7, and you don't break any rules.
My parents are beyond miserly. They hoard money and say that they are "poor"...

I presume then, that 1) my question cannot be answered because no one actually knows whether it's possible and 2) everyone has morals.

You CANNOT run drivers off a USB stick.  It's not possible, period.

The morality is a totally separate issue.
Finally, a conclusive answer. I thank you for that.

2. What do you need their gpu for if you have an ASIC in hand?
How do I run an ASIC when I cannot install a driver for it?

I prolly should have mentioned this earlier, but if you don't own the hardware you're mining on, you should not be doing it. You're literally asking for help setting up a system where you can mine for maybe a dozen hours a week, on hardware owned and maintained by your school? Ya, you're asking for all sorts of issues with that, both technical and legal.
No, no. That's not my intention. I'm no idiot. I just want to "borrow" the GPU while I am doing work and when I am not using it, I plug out the USB and the computer goes back to normal. Anyway, I only have access to it for about 3 hours per week, and most of the time, I'm doing school work that the teacher intends for us to do.

If that's illegal, then what about playing WoW and earning virtual currency on the school's computers? Or using the Internet (which the school paid money for) when you aren't supposed to?

Anyway, everyone has the right to answer or not. This is a question and I'm not threatening you with some computer virus if you don't answer. FYI, I know nothing of those. I'm only 16.

Sorry to disappoint you guys, but I know about booting off an external drive. Thing is, I cannot do that without the teacher seeing. There's this teacher sitting in the front of the class and all the screens face the front. Even if you could attempt to boot up Linux or something else on the computer, the teacher will see it.

Even if he does not see it, the teacher's computer has a software that can "see" what you have on your screens. I can't remember the technical term for that, but basically, it's a manual override. Even if I boot up on Linux and he can't use the program on me, my "friends" may root me out anyway. Even if they don't, the teacher still patrols about.

I was expecting something like a program that auto-runs when you jack in the USB stick. It hooks up to the GPU and just works. Like CGMiner. It detects ASICs and just works. No configuration needed.

Running drivers off a computer?

The title may be a little grammatically confusing, but it's exactly what it means. Basically, instead of installing drivers in the computer and run it from there, can I install those same drivers on, say a flash drive and then plug it into another computer and make it work?

Here's the situation: My school's computers are relatively good mining machines, all having an ATI 68xx graphics cards. Also, I have a couple of ASICs that can be brought about (which I do sometimes, "borrowing" my friend's computer Tongue).

Now, these computers have one stupid thing called "restrictions" enabled. Basically, I cannot install programs or drivers, but I can run them. I cannot install GTA inside the computer, but if I have installed it on my flash drive, I can run it. So, I asked a question on another forum as to how I can run programs off a computer and the answer I got was http://portableapps.com/

Now, I am not exactly sure about drivers, since although they are programs, they work differently compared to executables. I am asking this because I also intend to "borrow" my school's computers to mine Grin.

NOTE: Windows only, although if anyone has something for Mac, feel free to talk about it (since I used to be in a school which had Macs).

Ah, fixed the bloody problem. It appears that nothing was wrong, just that BFGMiner did not automatically detect my miners. I had to manually enter the whole string of miner ID numbers just to get them to work... Anyone knows of a more automated way?

Um....look at my post one message up from the one I'm quoting.. it has the automated parameters needed for BFGMiner to enable any Erupters it finds... no need to list them all separately
NVM. As said, CGMiner works for me. That's good enough, unless BFG gets me a faster hash rate?

Another question: Can I increase the intensity of mining on ASICs? I know you can on GPUs, but on ASICs?

Well, I need some help. My BlockErupters have came and I have installed all the drivers and required stuff. The problem I have is that BFGMiner does not recognize my USB Miners. Also, for some weird reason, I cannot go to /dev to check on the miners, whether they have been recognized or not. Finder keeps telling me that I have no /dev folder at all O_o.

I have not managed to get Macminer or Asteroid working on my MacPro, it maybe because I am running 10.7.4, or I dont have the correct libraries etc.

I have spent a lot of time trying, and finally gave up.

Cgminer works well, also Diablo and Bfgminer.

I must agree with the statements about the Mac being a nicer/faster OS to use, I have been a PC/MAC tech for many many years, didnt like the Mac much until the processors changed over to Intel.  I was always a fan of Linux/RISC OS due to being a network administrator on RS mini's (showing my age now).

The Mac is like a breath of fresh air compared to the pc.

They both have their advantages, but you can't run your PC as a Mac when you need to  Grin

Phil
Actually, you can. It's called a Hackintosh, or a hacked PC that can run Mac OS X. Search it up Wink.

As others mentioned it can be a little bit of trial and error but there's no reason why you can't use your macbook for mining. Personally I don't like the way mac OS has changed over the years. It's like there is a child lock on the OS it limits everything you can do to the point it's not actually easier, it's just more difficult. Having said that, it still exceeds windows in terms of progression.
Child lock? Seriously... You don't own the Mac you are talking about do you? I am perfectly fine with my Mac, but that's me. In fact, after I transitioned to Mac from Windows, which took barely an hour, I never went back except to play games. In fact, I can barely remember all I that I learned about Windows. I still remember basics like how to install and run programs, but coding just vanished... Tongue
I've I used MacMiner and straight commandline BFGMiner via Homebrew but you can get pre-compiled versions of the latest BFGMiner and CGMiner from here: https://github.com/nwoolls/xgminer-osx/releases

You can also check out my video showing me setup my USB Block Erupters on my MacPro: http://youtu.be/hGYwCDXLrdQ
Thanks. Rather interesting...

Just asking:
Anyone bought ASICMiner Block Erupters from @CanaryInTheMine?

If you did:
How long did it take for you to receive the Block Erupters after you confirmed your order with him (sent money, he confirmed it etc.)?

I ordered from him, but I am not sure when it will arrive. I may not be home to receive it in time, since after this long weekend, I still have to get back to school... Also, I don't like to take a trip to the post office just to get that.

Lovely. Thanks! I was starting to wonder whether they would work on Mac... I noted that mining on Mac with CGMiner was faster than mining on Win8 with CGMiner. It may have to do with the OS's method of handling processes, which Mac has time and again proven that it was superior at.

That's why I chose Mac over Windows for nearly everything I do (which includes music making/editing, picture editing etc.)

Can I use ASICMiner Block Erupter on Mac?

I own a MacBook Pro, capable of nearly everything, including dual-booting two OSes, namely Mac OS X 10.8.4 and Windows 8.

I use Mac 80% of the time and Windows for gaming only. Since I spend so much time on my Mac, can I use the Block Erupters on Mac OS X?

I read all about the Net as to how to get it to work in Windows' CGMiner. I have it installed in Mac OS X via homebrew, Terminal.

If I can't use them on Mac, can anyone post some instructions as to how to get them up and working on Windows 8?

P.S. I never liked CGMiner on both OSes. I use DiabloMiner on Windows and BFGMiner on Mac, so can I keep these two miners and still use them or must I use CGMiner?

One question: Can I choose to delay the shipment to a specific date?

Your prices are great and I wish to order two, but I want my question answered first. It's got to do with a little private matter. I wish to delay my order. I can pay now, but can I fix a specific date for shipping of the ASICs?

Since I am "delaying" my order, I don't think I need priority shipping, so can I cut down on the shipping costs? Tracking would be useful, as well as insurance, but a 0.85 BTC shipping cost for a 0.45 BTC miner sounds a little ridiculous.
Not sure where number 0.85 btc for shipping comes from. The pricing is what it is. If shipping international, it is expensive for small orders. Shipping is listed below for reference. Orders will ship when received within 24 hours.

INTERNATIONAL Orders

Units Ordered  Unit Price

    1-20            0.45 BTC
21+            Please PM me for a quote.

International priority shipping
1-14                         0.35 BTC  No Tracking/No Insurance Available (NOT RECOMMENDED)
Any Size Order            0.80 BTC  USPS Priority Mail International Shipping Includes Tracking
express shipping          1.05 btc total any size order

Insurance (Optional)
0.02 BTC per $100 Insurance Purchased, $500 Maximum Per Order

So, if I want to order 2 Erupters, with Insurance, Without tracking, it'd cost me:
0.45+0.35+0.40x2 yes? And I'll receive them within 24 hours even without express shipping, yes?

Hi. Another new miner. Also in SG (obviously). Just wondering, does anyone know where I can get ASICs or FPGAs locally?

PayPal is being a dick and isn't allowing me to transfer funds from my UOB account, and I don't have a credit card, so I am stuck on local stuff unless someone allows bank transfers, which I have rarely seen.

I am looking for the ASICMiner Block Erupter or something similar (portable). Don't need much hashing power, since I am not entirely hardcore on this.

IDC about power usage or ROI, since most of the time, I'd be using school's free WiFi and power to do this.

P.S. It would be great if the ASIC/FPGA supports both Windows and Mac.

You will still need to care about ROI even if power is free for you.

If you are going to buy a mining gear that can't recover the cost in its life time, you will be better off just buying the equivalent in bitcoin now and hope for it to appreciate in value in the future.

I suggest you do more research, particularly from the Mining Speculation Forum here and learn how to create or adopt a ROI model before you invest in any mining gear.
I know that. Since the money comes mainly from cash gifts by my relatives, it's not much of an issue to me. It's like they are giving me the ASIC as a gift indirectly. Anyway, I have already done the necessary calculations.

Still, anyone knows what I should get? The 5GH/s miner from Butterfly Labs (which haven't been shipping, according to the news I have read), or two/three Block Erupters?

P.S. Finally got my Bitcoins now, just not sure what to buy. I am intending to invest, FYI, but that's another story.

Should fill it immediately if your ask is the same as a current bid.

In other words someone is selling a bc at 117, and you put in an order at 117 (same amount of bc) it will get filled.
If you place an order at 116 though- the order will be pending until someone wants to sell at 116.

Currently, you can buy 1 bc at S$117.95 which is about USD$93.77 or a 1.59% premium over the mt.gox USD rate, but still below the S$119 mt gox rate.

David

Thanks. Makes sense. Well, it's SGD 120+ now...
