Re: Some say Bitcoin is dead but Bitcoin is not dead

For every person in the world that doesn't think Bitcoin will go up, there is another person that thinks it will.

So, the question is, which side will you be on?   It is as simple as that.

Bitcoin is not anti-inflation,  "Scarcity" is anti-inflation.    Bitcoin just happens to have scarcity.    This Scarcity of Bitcoin, is not defined by centralization where someone holds a master key but rather "Scarcity" enabled-by "Proof-Of-Work" in place of a centralized cryptography scheme (like POS).  That is why "proof of work" , providing scarcity, is "anti-inflation".

Bitcoin will be just fine.  Chill peeps.

"Bitcoin runs on stranded, excess energy, generated at the edge of the grid, in places where there is no other demand, at times when no one else needs the electricity.  Retail & commercial consumers of electricity in major population areas pay 5-10x more per kwH (10-20 cents per kwH) than bitcoin miners, who should be thought of as wholesale consumers of energy (normally budgeting 2-3 cents per kwH). The world produces more energy than it needs, and approximately a third of this energy is wasted. The last 15 basis points of energy power the entire Bitcoin Network - this is the least valued, cheapest margin of energy left after 99.85% of the energy in the world is allocated to other uses." - Michael Sayor @ michael.com

Re: BTC is scarcer than gold.

Gold supply is not verifiable.  Supply and price is therefore easily manipulated through paper markets.   Even if you had Gold in your hands, you might need to melt it down and recast, just to be sure.

Without that important property of money, it's worthless.

Bitcoin on the other hand, happens to be 100% physically verifiable.   Just check one of the copies of the ledger.

Just a note, depending on which Linux you use, you need to be aware of the service start scripts detailed here:

https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/tree/master/contrib/init

So, using Ubuntu, you will probably be using the Upstart script.  Just important to be aware of that IMHO.

Re: Does Bitcoin have any real value?
by
djangofan
on 12/10/2021, 23:54:57 UTC
Perspective:  Which has more value?

1.  A Fiat currency controlled by elected and non-elected persons and not backed by any asset
2.  A Fiat currency controlled by elected and non-elected persons and backed by a Gold asset which is leveraged (meaning that the actual market cap is greater than the supply of the commodity times the price)
3.  A digital currency not controlled by anyone, infinitely reliable due to decentralization, and backed only by its pure immutability

The answer is simple.

I bet Defi will be forced to re-invent after its first failure in this phase.   Same thing happened to Ethereum right?

Someone needs to make a "Ten Commandments of Bitcoin"  to straighten people out.

One of the commandments could be:

Thou shalt not buy or shill a narrative-based* coin unless you have a specific reason to think it has value.

Just a fun idea.

* narrative based - see Dan Helds article: The Rise and Fall of Crypto Narratives

Why are "Likes" turned off in this forum?

Just wondering.

Because:   when likes are turned off I feel like I need to comment instead, which makes things even noisier in forum threads.

Re: I have concluded that all governments together can't stop bitcoin

It is just crazy to think that banks are "tryiing to stop Bitcoin".   The recent news proves that belief is false: "Bitcoin is coming to hundreds of U.S. banks this year, says crypto custody firm NYDIG"

Why would that happen if banks were trying to stop it?   Now, if the US isn't going to stop it, what makes you think all the countries in the world would try to stop it?

I think I am going to LEAVE this forum  Sad  since one of my first posts got deleted for no good reason.

I spent a whole bunch of time making a Bitcoin related website, and then I wanted to share the ad-free site for free.

The post was soon deleted, despite it being directly on-topic, and even after 5-6 people participated in conversation about it.

Re: Is it possible to live without banks?
by
djangofan
on 29/03/2021, 01:28:20 UTC
  • I think any individual should be able to act as a bank as long as they do not lend more than the Bitcoin they have on reserve.
  • Given that Bitcoin is sub-dividable to ~ 1700 trillion  remaining units, I see no reason for fractional reserve lending.

Fractional reserve enabled banks to be the most profitable business on the planet, earning 50-%++ yearly interest on their reserved money.   You have to be kidding me that they got away with this unnecessary theft for so long.

Re: Trezor One vs Ledger Nano S-which one is safer?

I don't understand why anyone would take the risk of using a "USB hardware wallet", when it is not firesafe, and has the possibility of a software problem.     I lean towards a "metal hardware wallet" like the ELLIPAL Mnemonic Metal  OR  Cobo Tablet .

Can anyone convince me that a USB wallet would be as safe?

Idea: Keep your own log of your favorite forecasters

I had a neat idea to keep a log of forecasts for Bitcoin so that I can revisit them later.

Would be fun to see other people doing this also.

Re: Bitcoin could win the currency war
by

There is no reason to believe that Bitcoin will replace fiat,  but rather it will sit along-side the currencies "declared via fiat" in each country.   What Bitcoin WILL DO is serve as a relative basis to measure the inflation/deflation of each fiat currency, in the same way that Gold serves that purpose today.
