Let me say the term "YOU GUYS" Is a general term here.. not going to finger point directly

You guys really gotta stop undercutting each other to where you have no room for negotiation for the guys who are spending $5000-$10,000 a week with you... SERIOUSLY

No way some guy selling 50 a week should even be able to compete with someone ordering and selling 300-500 a week... NOT EVEN CLOSE
Its become so cutthroat by the distributers that they are driving the bigger resellers away in liu of a small order.... Maybe its time friedcat get more involved and protect his investment (HIS MARKET)

PROTECT YOUR MARKET!

Did you consider the possibility that perhaps the problem isn't the new reseller stepping in and offering the same product for less... but could instead be existing resellers taking too much profit margin?

As an example... the coupons being offered for .10, to pay an additional 50% of that is stupid.  Those that bought for coupons won't make ROI on the devices, even at the coupon price.. but resellers made BANK.

Not taking anything away from existing resellers.. the services they offer are top notch.  But there is obviously good money to be made as a reseller...
The manufacturer lowering the price ever other week doesn't help either I expect... and just screws those stuck with inventory.

4 btc/$560 cost basis for 10gh + starting difficulty 88,000,000 + only 15% per difficulty increase = $27 profit after 12 months.  No go.

Mining is dead, long live mining!

What calculations for % gain in BTC price?
Sorry for the tangent of the thread... but I feel it's relevant.

If you spend 4BTC, and it never returns 4BTC... then who cares what USD price of BTC is?

The less than 4BTC you earn with the hardware will never be worth as much as the 4BTC spent for the hardware, no matter what the price of BTC is...

Not conservative enough.  By the time anyone receives one, the diff is estimated to be > ~85M.
Making only that change:  http://mining.thegenesisblock.com/a/affe07a256

Regardless of the posts about the "value" of BTC in USD....  If you spend 4BTC on one of these, the chance of getting 4BTC back from them is non-existent.

What OS?
What version of BFG?
If you reboot, is it the same one that's not recognized every time?  Or does it change?
What do you have the failing BE plugged into?  Same powered hub as the others?  Have you tried the failing BE with another, to see if it follows the port or the miner?
What have you tried?
Did you post your question to the BFG support thread?

With the lack of info, and not posting this to it's designated support thread... you may get lucky if someone blindly guesses at the problem...

GoodLuck?

Can Minepeon listen on a different port instead of :443 or :80 ?  Can it be set up to first request credentials BEFORE it displays the MINEPEON splash page?  We don't want any intruders knowing what they've come across do we?  Smiley

Also, what are the firewall settings out of the box?

I'm not sure this is what you're considering, but I HIGHLY suggest that this not be directly connected to the internet.  Ensure it's behind a firewall (on a private network).

Others have mentioned how to change the port and remove the splash page, but if you have concerns with your internal network, then you probably have much bigger things to worry about.

Found the original dev, but no response.

If anyone is interested in testing PIckaxe with my modifications, I'd be very interested in feedback?!?

To test:
--Install the latest raspbian (raspbian.org) to the SDCard using WinImage32, or dd.  Guides to do this all over (google is your friend).
--Boot the rPi, and log in (user: pi, password: raspbian).
--(optional) Update Raspbian to latest:  'sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade'
--(optional) Configurate time-zone and expand to use entire SDCard:  'sudo raspi-config'  (then set the timezone, then choose option to Expand Filesystem.
--Load PIckaxe:  'cd && git clone https://github.com/sephtin/PIckaxe -b NoMoreSudoers'
--Install PIckaxe:  'cd PIckaxe && sudo setup.sh'

That should do it.  Let me know if it doesn't work for any reason... Tongue

In addition to what original PIckaxe provides, my modifications add:
--Fixed setup to correct host resolution errors
--Additional Setup fixes.
--Added columns to status for Total Shares, Rejected (and %Rejected), and HWErrors (and %HWErrors).
--Limited www-data's ability to sudo to only a couple executables.
--Made all config go into a single file.
--Started prepping for adding CGMiner (next version)...

Questions or anything, post or PM.

Daisy chaining hubs isn't an issue.

As others have said, you're probably going over on power.  I run those DLink hubs with 5x BE's in each, and a USB fan on one of the hubs to cool all of them...  My HWerror rate is under 1%.

I had stability issues running MinePeon, so I switched to PIckaxe... but I believe stability is much improved in MinePeon 0.2.3a or so.. ?

THANK YOU!

I haven't had a lot of time lately...  but I started putting together the changes I'm interested in incorporating...
--Single config file, instead of it writing files.
--Changed config dir from just in /etc/ to /etc/PIckaxe/, this also eliminates most of the sudo requirements.
--Changed sudoers file to not allow www-data access to everything via sudo, instead only 3 binaries.
...

Next up, re-write the start-up script, to check the config file to see if it should run cgminer or bfgminer, and add both binaries (probably not going to compile, as it is now... and I'll use the startup script Kano provided (I think in this thread!) as a foundation.
Once that's done, might consider adding notifications, maybe some other warm and fuzzies (graphs, or something)...

We'll see.  I'm off to see if the dev is actually interested in doing more with it or not.. Tongue

Thanks again!

Canary-
Just a thought, but you may want to update the first post of the old thread, and maybe unlock and add another post... ?
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=268263.120

A lot of people are watching that thread for updates (as per your suggestion), and it might help avoid some confusion/frustration for all involved...

Glad to hear the next round is rolling in.  Keep up the great work!

PIckaxe -- Looking for the original dev.
by

on 20/08/2013, 03:44:35 UTC
I came across a post about a raspbian (rPi) based mining dist. called PIckaxe, I believe the post was on Reddit, but I can't find it ANYWHERE!

The post had two links:
http://imgur.com/a/B9FyJ#W4sm2G2
and
https://github.com/stronginthearm/PIckaxe.

While credit should go where it's due:  The other rPi dist. is awesome, but I have a preference of Raspbian over Arch., and that cat.  Seriously, F' that cat .wav/mp3... (Disclaimer, I plan to donate to the project I end up going with, but I'm going to do so via my time and abilities, not by farming out my equipment... especially when I can put something together myself that gives the same results.).

Won't digress any further.  Here's what I know...
I like PIckaxe, and want to play with it more.
I ran 0.2.2 of the alternative, but it crashed within a day or two.  PIckaxe with my modifications has been running flawlessly for several days.

As it's GPL licensed, I'd like to start extending it a bit...
--Add columns to the status table (Total Shares, Rejected (and %), HWErrors (and %)... (Complete).
--Not a huge fan of how security was handled in orig. version (Completed limiting access in a testing version, with more changes planned).
--Want to add option of CGMiner (currently defaults to BFG).  (Mostly done).
--Want to add additional watchdog features, and change the start script(s) for the miners.
--etc.

But I'd like to collaborate and contribute with the original author.. my intention isn't to take someone else's code, or release a new project...  My efforts to contact him for the last several days have fallen short.

Anyone know stronginthearm?  Please have him PM me, or at least open discussion about what his intentions are for the code!

Thanks!

Re: Can't view Cgminer stats on Raspberry Pi
by

on 20/08/2013, 03:25:03 UTC
So I'm trying to make it where I can view my cgminer 3.1.1 on my raspberry pi. I'm using a VNC so I can see the stats on a different screen. I can't figure out how exactly to view anything and google searches haven't turned up any help.

Probably not getting responses because could use more info.
How did you run cgminer?  How was it started?

If you ran it from from the desktop, then when you connect with VNC to your session, you should just see it.

One suggestion might be starting it in a screen or tmux session.  That way, you can connect to it by opening a terminal window or through SSH, and attaching to the cgminer session with screen -r, or tmux attach, etc.

Have been watching this thread for a while and it's been really helpful!

I saw a post (that I can't seem to find.. I think on Reddit?!?!), that mentioned an alternative to MinePeon called PIckaxe.  I've used it for a few days now, and it's been extremely stable!
https://github.com/stronginthearm/PIckaxe

If you prefer Raspbian to Arch this might be an option.  I've decided to play with it, and gave it a few additions as well:
https://github.com/sephtin/PIckaxe

I'm really hoping to be able to get in touch with the author but have no idea how to contact them!  If you know stronginthearm please PM me!!

It uses BFGMiner but as soon as I find that someone has a decent grasp of how to fix the libusb problems for cgminer on Raspbian, I'll be switching it over (for my use, at least... If the dev. is ok with my working on it, I'd be happy to make it an option in the GUI...).

Edit:  Excessive, use, of, Commas,

Here's a more complete guide to getting WiFi going on rPi (Sorry if there's any bad blood between here and there... but it's a good howto):
https://forums.butterflylabs.com/showwiki.php?title=Tutorials:Raspberry+Pi+-+Mining+with+MinePeon&viewfull=1&page=4&do=comments#post38317

And, all I did to install ntp was:
$ sudo pacman -S ntp

it asked to uninstall openntpd, installed ntp, and after a reboot, time sync was resovled.

HTH!

Glad to hear you're working.

I might also mention that after I got this working via Wicd, I had issues with the time not syncing properly.
There are two ways to fix:
Create config files for networking (I didn't want to do this), or install ntpd (will ask to remove openntpd).  After installing ntpd and rebooting, time sync worked again.  I'll try to find the link to the post I followed to fix this, and edit it into this post when I get a few minutes...

Re: Which USB hub to use with Block Erupters or K1? A List.
by
sephtin
on 02/08/2013, 04:59:48 UTC
Device Name: AITech USB 3.0
Ports Total: 10
Ports Usable: 8
Power from AC: 12v @ 4A
Price USD: 60.99(Black)
Price / Usable Port: 7.62
Sold at:  http://www.amazon.com/Aitech-Adapter-backward-Compatible-aluminum/dp/B009NESU4M

Bought one of these to try, and it works fine with 8+arctic fan (Stable for more than 48hours).
I tried it with 9, and it ran for a while, but ever so often, I'd come back and the light would be on for one of the BErupters.  Occassionally, while stopping and starting mining software, the light would just flicker with 9.  So, I don't recommend 9 as it's unstable.

I almost wish there was a column in the table for RPi compatibillity.  I'm looking for a good 7 or 10 port hub for Raspbian or MiningPeon (Have both on separate cards, but no compatible hubs!)  :S

When I find RaspberryPi compatible hubs, I'll likely be looking to part with this, and a couple of the 9port Anker's.

nope, no dice.
/etc/network/interfaces either doesnt exist or I'm not allowed to change it (despite sudo).
putting wheezy on my SD and starting over.
The reason it won't let you edit it, is because the /etc/network folder doesn't exist by default.
I didn't have to do anything in the guide anyway.
The Wicd tool is included with the MinePeon dist.  (At least it is on 0.2.2), and worked fine for me.

I didn't follow the guide mentioned previously.  Instead, once logged in, I ran
$ sudo wicd-curses
P for prefs, set the Wireless Interface to wlan0, then hit F10 to save.
R for refresh to scan for wifi networks.
select your netowrk, and hit the right arrow to configure settings.  Then F10 to save.
Again select your netowrk (now configured), and hit C to connect.

The status at the bottom of the screen showed it connect, authenticate, get an IP, and then show a status of "Connected".

Hope that's helpful.
If this has helped, feel free to send a tip my way:

are you still selling the anker hubs? i can't even find the 10 port ones on amazon at this point Sad
nope, they stopped making them...

Juiced is what you can use in it's place but you may need to put more airflow on that one

I've decided to try these two:
Anker 9port +1 charging (maybe 9 devices and 1 fan?), with 5A power supply:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005NGQWL2

And an AiTech 10port, with 4A power supply:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009NESU4M

I'm also finally going to go for a RPi.  So will be testing 4 diff. 10 port hubs on it.  (Roswill, the old Anker (which I hear works), the new Anker, and the AiTech).

Feedback from anyone that's tried any of these is appreciated!
