Cyyptonight CPU Mining with i686?
by
strangerhacks
on 01/02/2018, 23:45:44 UTC
Where I live we don't pay for hydro, most of this is solar and the rest is supplied for us by the landlord and I have a TON of old computers and some laptops, I started running MinerGate just because of how easy it is to start the Cyyptonight algorithm with CPUs, you just make an account, download the miner, bingo Bango, done, I'm mining Dash, Monero, and on my systems with dedicated graphics Zcash.

Now the problem I've run into is I have all the "Windows Visa era" computers up and running just fine, but as soon as I got into the "Windows XP era" computers they were all 32bit so I figured Windows 7 32bit would be fine but it won't install, keeps giving me some error about not having enough RAM (all systems are maxed out at the 4gb 32bit supports) so I did some digging around and apparently i686 processors aren't supported or something?

I tried Lubuntu on two systems now, both with i686 Pentium 4's, one is 2.4ghz, one is 2.8ghz, tried with CPUMiner-Multi and two different revisions of it from other devs and nothing works, every time it won't complete the "sudo make install" command in terminal and tells me there is no files to install.

Did more reading and it says it's because it doesn't support i686, I've tried searching for hours now to find anything regarding mining on an i686 platform and found nothing other than one post, I think it was on Yahoo answers? Someone had the identical issue but they added these flags which both of my current systems I was testing on came up with invalid flags and the command wouldn't work, kept getting the same issue as before where it won't install.

Any suggestions? I have 6 computers up and running and I wanted to get the last 4 going, I made about $23 last week on these setups, it's really interesting to play with old hardware likethay and see it becoming useful still.

If someone could point me to a work around for getting Windows 7 32bit to install on an i686 that would be ideal, but if theres a Linux workaround for CPUMiner-Multi that works I'm not against it.
Or someway to mine cryptonight on Windows XP because that installs just fine on these old systems

Thanks for any advice

This is really disappointing, does anyone know of a way around this by disabling the rpm check in the firmware?

I was looking and hoping to find some custom firmware mods for a work around and I came across something called Mintorro, anyone know if this will allow me to use any fan? This 140mm Noctua PPC 3000rpm fan is working really well on this thing, I don't want to give it up for another stock fan

EDIT:
If anyone else is wondering or having this same issue, I have the Noctua hooked up to the power supply for power, and the stock fan hooked up to the miner board with the fan speed set to 0%, the stock fan still spins for some reason but it's spinning at 1680rpm so it's not making any noise at all and the entire rig right now is super quiet, it just looks ghetto as hell having a fan hanging off the side the way it is right now which is why I would really like to find a way around this by disabling the rpm check so it will just allow me to use a fan with a lower than factory rpm.

It's also kind of stupid how it will allow you to run a stock fan below 3000rpm, but a 3000rpm fan triggers the warning as not being enough..

The fans I bought are industrial grade noctua fans, 4 pin, is there any way to disable it's request for fan RPM? The fan is cooling it just fine as long as I leave the factory one plugged in and sitting there.

Alternatively I was thinking I might power the Noctua off of the PSU and set then fan speed for the board down to 0% if it'll allow that low, so far this is the only thing I can think of to get around this issue.

It's a rather stupid issue at that, especially when it has a fail safe to shut off is over 80 degrees, I don't see why fan RPM needs to be taken into consideration for these.

antMiner S7 fan replacement, won't stop beeping and not hashing

I have an S7 I've been running for quite awhile now and the fan has started making this god awful whistling sound I can hear through out my house, it's located in my basement and my bedroom is on the second floor and I can hear it as though it's in the room beside me.

Long story short I needed a new fan so I bought a 140mm Noctua Industrial 3000rpm fan as it has very similar air flow readings to what I've found the stock fan to output.

I used a 140-120mm adapter to hook it up, plugged the fan it, works fine for exactly 1 minute and then it starts beeping and stops hashing, I tried lowering the frequency all the way down to 100 and it still beeps at me and won't stop, I hooked up the old fan in the second fan pin header (I should add this is an S7-F1 with only 1 fan) and after rebooting it, works totally fine, temps read about 70 degrees which is only 2 degrees higher than the stock fan and everything is totally fine, but, that stupid seizing loud fan is hooked up again making tons of noise.

Does anyone know a way around this? How do I run an S7 without the factory fan? It's running just fine with the 3000rpm 140mm Noctua, I don't need this other one hooked up but it won't run without it.

EDIT:
Similar question, I have three 1000w HP server PSU's and I picked up 6 40mm noctua fans for those, I took one apart and depinned the proprietary connector to wire in the Noctua fans, and when I plugged it in to test, the fans don't spin up, I'm assuming it's a similar situation where it will not work with aftermarket fans.
Any suggestions on this?

How do you set up your networks? I'm not sure where to start.

I've been mining SHA-256 on some Block Erupters and Antminer U2's on an old laptop using WiFi since March, I started getting into Scrypt and introduced quite a few more old laptops, all of them are running Scrypt on the GPU and X11 on the CPU.

I've decided I have made enough that I'm going to dump some real coin on this and buy a few Antminer S3's and GridSeed G-Blades. I'm going to use all Corsair power supplies because the internet tells me mining hardware likes them and it's all going to be controlled with two Raspberry Pi's and USB hubs.

I know the most common way is to run ethernet, split it with an ethernet switch and play from there, but, we don't have a furnace or ducting, it's all baseboard heaters so there is no ducting to run ethernet cables cleanly.

What I'm thinking is to some way take our existing WiFi signal that all of my old laptops have been running on for almost a year, get some kind of router to accept that WiFi signal, allow me to run ethernet out of it, then into an ethernet switch and from that point, run all of this just like the many builds I've seen around here.

I'm trying to eliminate the hardwire ethernet from the main router, to the switch, and replace it with some kind of backwards router, that accepts wifi signal, and then lets me run ethernet out of it

Is this possible? Is it a real thing or do I really need to run some ethernet cables around the door ways and drill some holes in the walls?

What's your network setup, I'm looking for ideas to keep the ethernet runs short.

Thanks for any help.

I can't seem to get this to connect, it times out every time. I've tried the following.

Code:
minerd.exe --url=stratum+tcp://multi.ghash.io:3333 --userpass=strangerhacks.intel:intel
Code:
minerd.exe -o stratum+tcp://multi.ghash.io:3333 -O strangerhacks.intel:intel
Code:
minerd.exe -o stratum+tcp://multi.ghash.io:3333 -u strangerhacks.intel -p intel

I've also tried with and without .exe at the end and that doesn't do anything at all, I've tried with a password and without a password, I've also tried on ltc.ghash.io and I even tried to mine SHA-256 by adding --algo=sha256d to the end of the three lines above and without fail, it results in a timeout error.

I tried pinging all URL's and they all result in less then 70 milliseconds.

Any ideas? I'm currently mining with CudaMiner using the following and it's working just fine so it's not the pool.

Code:
cudaminer.exe -o stratum+tcp://multi.ghash.io:3333 -O strangerhacks.intel:intel

If it helps, I have an Intel 3630QM 2.4GHz i7

.. I'm wondering what kind of use I could have for all of these with mining altcoins.

None, unless you are Edison himself and don't give a f.. about electricity price.
You didn't read at all huh? I said our property is entirely supplied by solar and wind, we don't pay for Hydro and our energy supply is always more then used so it doesn't matter how many computers I have running, it won't make a dent in our hydro supply.

When mining x-11
What's x-11? Is it like Scrypt or something or is that a mining pool?

(I've left this one on for days and the laptop didn't blow up, but I don't care if it does, as i'm assuming you don't)
You got it, they're just sitting there taking up space so why not take up space and mine at the same time right? And they're out in the garage so if they break who cares, just sweep the floor and toss it out.

but do you want to change the pool on 25 computers every day, or just leave it on something more stable.

I was going to set it up on a MultiPool so it'll automatically switch between cryptocurancies with a back up MultiPool so it's always mining Scrypt. I'm going to look into this X-11 thing though, would it be more efficient for older hardware?

GPU Mining SHA-256 vs Scrypt? I'm confused..
by
strangerhacks
on 03/05/2014, 08:35:56 UTC
When I started mining, I was just using my GPU in my laptop, gave me around 35MH/s mining SHA-256 with the Nvidia GPU, I figured it was going well, did the same on one of my iMacs and I was getting around 150MH/s mining SHA-256 with the ATI GPU.

Now this makes sense, as expected, however, now that GPU mining with SHA-256 is pretty much useless, I decided to switch them over to Scrypt and get some of those sweet sweet altcoins. Now this is where I'm kind of lost. With the Nvidia GPU, I was using GPUMiner, on the Mac with the ATI GPU, I was using Asteroid. Now for mining Scrypt on the PC with the Nvidia GPU, I started using CudaMiner and its going at around 120KH/s.

But the Mac with the ATI GPU, I'm still using Asteroid but now mining with Scrypt and only getting around 10KH/s, shouldn't the ATI GPU be way more then the Nvidia one? I thought ATI was where it's at when it comes to mining but my Nvidia PC is mining at around 12 times faster then the ATI Mac.

Is it just Asteroid that's not mining correctly or something because this seems extremely low when it was going at around 150MH/s mining SHA-256 but only 10Kh/s mining Scrypt while the Nvidia GPU was mining around 35MH/s with SHA-256 and now 120KH/s mining Scrypt.

Any input would be great, the faster I can get that hashrate up on the Mac the faster I can mine the precious altcoin.

Old hardware mining (CPU & GPU)
by
strangerhacks
on 03/05/2014, 08:27:08 UTC
I used to buy old broken computers, fix them up, and sell them as working for a small profit but after setting into my new career path I haven't had time to continue with this hobby which has now left me with close to 25 computers/laptops/macs sitting in my basement that are mostly perfect working computers, just old and no use to me so I'm wondering what kind of use I could have for all of these with mining altcoins.

I was going to set aside an area in one of the garages and hook up all of the computers to run 24/7 altcoin mining with both cpu and gpu at once but I'm not big on the knowledge for this or what's needed for each one.

The property is run entirely on solar and wind so hydro usage doesn't matter at all, I can leave them all on without making a dent in it but I don't know what kind of programs I can use for CPU mining or GPU mining, I would like to do both at once and then maybe run a portable air conditioner to cool the garage all summer so over heating shouldn't be a problem either.

What kind of restrictions would I be looking at for types of CPU's? Some of them are as old as Pentium 4's with onboard graphics, others have some older Radeon GPU's, small old Radeons, around 128mb at most, the majority are 32mb and 64mb gpu's, both Nvidia and ATI. Most of them are Intel based CPU's but I think three or four of them are AMD, I also have a bunch of old Mac's I would like to do something with along the lines of altcoin mining. There's G3 iMacs, G3 iBooks, G4 PowerBooks, G5 iMacs, eMacs, MacBook, some MacBook Pro's, and I also have my ASUS G75 running right now and I have three 27" iMacs running too so I am mining some altcoin with those but I would like to put all of these old computers to use since they're just sitting there anyways and hydro doesn't matter.

It would be nice to have them all sitting there, AND doing something but I don't know what to look for when it comes to both Intel and AMD CPU mining, as well as both Nvidia and ATI GPU mining. What kind of restrictions are there for these old computers? How far back can I go before a CPU or GPU won't be supported to mine altcoins? What would be the best all around mining program that would perform well for all four types of mining I would be aiming for.

Re: Sold DVC on eBay, I think I'm being scammed..

Well all in all, they made a claim with PayPal and as you said, PayPal did side with them and issued them a refund. I contacted CEX.IO and all they said was they can tell me the username of the person who accepted the voucher but nothing more then that as they don't interfere with third party exchanges so after giving their username to PayPal in the dispute, they refused to provide their username but PayPal still sided with them because it turns out their username is considered "private information" and they can't make them show me to make sure the accounts match.

It's not a huge deal, I sold 1 DVC for $0.99 just to see if it would sell and it did but whatever, it was a buck and after contacting eBay they said they would put a flag on their account to see if they try to do it again to other sellers so if this is a routine thing for them, it's going to stop if they keep doing it.

It's such a pain that CEX.IO gives you free multipool mining with SHA-256 for NameCoin, IXCoin, and DevCoin while you mine BitCoin at full hash rate but they only let you trade NameCoin. I have all this IXC and DVC with no use, and to withdrawal they charge a 0.001 fee of whatever the currancy to trade it to Cryptsy, trade for BTC, and then Cryptsy takes a fee to withdrawal it again to put it back into CEX.IO

It's like this MultiPool mining for SHA-256 is just to get people in there because after all the fees you lose a pretty big portion of what was earned, it's almost not worth it.

You've reached the limit of the power that can be supplied by USB.

When you say USB do you mean USB input from the computer or supplied USB output power of the hub? I'm running 3 Anker 9+1 port hubs on an Asus G75 so I kind of just assumed for the price of these it would have been up to the task however I do know that laptops USB run at 3.3v for some reason while a desktop runs at a true 5v and USB 3.0 isn't working on my laptop since the Windows 8.1 upgrade so it's running at 3.3v but the hubs are still powered at a full 5v which I thought would compensate for the laptops 3.3v ports.

on 26/04/2014, 09:36:57 UTC
I just looked up some voltage mod info for these and this is exactly why the U1 can only be overclocked to 2.0GH/s because it's limited to 0.8v, which the U2 has a 10k resistor already installed from Bitmain in the R2 slot which puts it at 0.9v minimum.

I'm not sure if Bitmain upgraded the R1 resister? What is the standard running voltage of the Antminer U2? Anyone know if Bitmain upgraded the R1 resistor so I would know where to start from?

It's really a shame they didn't make this upgrade easier as it's a SMD resistor, it's going to suck to change, and to change 3 times until I figure out what maximum voltage and overclock frequency to keep a stable temperature with how many fans I have, and then do it 9 more times for the other ones lol.

Problems Overclocking Antminer U2 to 2.6GH/s!!
by

on 26/04/2014, 09:07:09 UTC
I have 10 Antminer U2's that I was running at 1.6GH/s when I got them, after my Arctic Breeze fans came in, I overclocked them to 2.2GH/s and now recently I noticed you can just keep going, there's overclock support for up to 4GH/s if you can get it working with proper cooling.

Now when I found out about these new values for overclocking further then the "supported" 2.2GHz (x0A81), I decided I would start testing slowly one step up at at time until I notice the heat increase so I stepped them up to 2.4GH/s (x0B81) and ran those for about a week, didn't heat up at all, the fans are keeping the heat sinks cold to the touch from ambient room temperature.

The problem though, is earlier tonight I decided it's time for the next step and upped it to 2.6GH/s with x4C81 only to have crazy hardware errors (something around 13-15% on boot and they just kept climbing). After this happened, I would have to disconnect everything, plug each hub back in with nothing in them, and plug each Antminer U2 back in the hubs one at a time while the hub was powered on just to get all 10 working again otherwise only 4 would come up if I tried to open my .bat file again after changing the overclock value back down.

So does anyone know why my Antminer U2's run flawless at 2.4GH/s (x0B18) but as soon as they're set to 2.6GH/s (x4C81) they go crazy and then only 4 work until I unhook everything and hook them up one at a time? They're handing 2.4GH/s just fine, still cold even so I don't see why 2.6GH/s would be so glitchy when they're barely even making heat with how I have them cooled.

EDIT:
I forgot to add, I tried 2.8GH/s just to see if maybe it was a 2.6GH/s issue, perhaps skip it and go on to the next but that wasn't the case, as soon as I opened BFG Miner when set to 2.8GH/s (x4D81) they went from all 0 to 100% hardware errors instantly.

I just don't understand why it's such a drastic jump in issues. I've been back on 2.4GH/s for about a half hour now and I still have 0 hardware errors but 0.2GH/s more and it jumps to a 13-15% starting rate for hardware errors and keeps going up, then another 0.2GH/s more and they start off at 100% hardware error.

Re: Antminer U2's just stopped working after restart!!
by
strangerhacks
on 26/04/2014, 08:57:59 UTC
Okay, I've unhooked everything and plugged in each Antminer U2 one at a time, every one of them is good, runs nice and stable, tried different USB devices in the Anker 9+1 port hubs and they're all working fine, every port so that's not it, I started plugging the Antminers back in one at a time and they started working, it's so weird, they wouldn't work if I unplugged the hubs and plugged them back in, but with the hubs powered and plugged in, each Antminer U2 was coming up as it did before but this time it would work in BFG Miner too.

I found what the problem was, I forgot I was testing cooling angles with the fans so I could get a good overclock going and I had them set to 2.8GH/s before I restarted the computer so when I reset the .bat file from x0781 (1.6GH/s) back to x4C81 (2.6GH/s) I was on before doing Windows Updates I was watching it and it was just hardware errors non stop, they just kept going up so I stopped it, dropped it back down to the stable x0B81 (2.4GH/s) and again, only 4 would come up.

I unhooked everything again, reattached all three hubs with nothing in them and having them powered on, started plugging in each Antminer U2 one at a time and set my .bat file back to x0B81 and it's good again, all 10 running at 2.4GH/s without a problem, the heat sinks are cold to the touch from ambient objects in the room which I think is pretty impressive.

So, you know, if anyone else is having an issue after overclocking to 2.6GH/s, just unhook everything and plug them in one by one and they worked for me.

Antminer U2's just stopped working after restart!!
by

on 26/04/2014, 08:34:44 UTC
I had some updates on my computer so after restarting I started up the .bat file again, same one I always use but for some reason only 4 Antminer's are starting up, I checked in control panel under devices and printers and it's showing all 10 hooked up but no matter what I do I can only get 4 to come up, I've tried switching pools and nothing, tried restarting and nothing, I even tried restoring to before the updates and still nothing, I'm really confused.

I even tried unhooking each hub and trying one hub at a time and still problems with each hub with all of them working, one hub has 3, only 2 come up in BFG Miner, another one has 3, still only 2 come up in BFG Miner, tried the third hub which has 4 (but no fan because it's in between the other two hubs so it gets plenty of air flow) and none of them come up in BFG Miner. It's the weirdest thing because they were all JUST working before I restarted my computer and now only 4 work.

Now.. The really weird part is that with all three hubs hooked up, I'm getting share flashes from one of the Antminers on the 4 unit hub (the one that says none work in BFG Miner) so I don't know what's going on.

Any suggestions? I don't have another computer handy right at the moment but as soon as I fix my old laptop I'm going to test these on there to see what's up.

Re: Anyone GPU Bitcoin mining in 2014?
by
strangerhacks
on 19/04/2014, 01:33:07 UTC
My GPU is running Scrypt on a multipool and then converted to BTC, it's a lot more profitable this way.

The only problem with getting a cheap ASIC miner like I did was they only mine SHA-256 so their low hash rates can only miner BTC, NMC, etc. It's a lot more energy effecient to mine with Scrypt to mine altcoins like Dogecoin, Litecoin, Feathercoin, etc and then convert it to Bitcoin.

As you can see in my sign, I started March 25th, tossed out just over a grand on ASIC mining stuff and I've only made just over 12 bucks back. I'm only getting about 45 GH/s on all of my stuff too so it takes for ever. But if you just set them all up on an old desktop PC (not laptop) with some powered USB hubs in the ol basement and never touch them again they do add up lol.

I've found that desktop computers support a full 5v on USB so a powered USB hub works great on all ports, but if you use a laptop they only support 3.3v on USB so even a powered hub won't help you. I was only able to run 2 powered hubs on my laptop but after switching to an old desktop I was able to run all 5 hubs without a problem.

I'm running 16 Antminer U2 at 2.2GH/s, 15 Block Erupters, with 5 Anker 9+1 port powered USB 3.0 hubs, and one Arctic Breeze fan in each of the 5 hubs.

I would still suggest mining a Scrypt Altcoin or a Scrypt Multipool with your GPU and convert to BTC, it's the best way for power consumption vs profit.

If you do intent to run a GPU on SHA-256, I tried GHash.IO, BTCGuild, and SlushPool and hands down, I made almost double on SlushPool. The payout on SlushPool was always more because the rounds are very random in time. I worked it out that if a round on SlushPool was longer then 12 hours, I would have made more on BTCGuild, but if it's shorter then 12 hours then I make more on SlushPool, so even when some rounds do take up as long as 26 hours, it's usually followed by a good set of rounds that are only a few minutes which I just rack up in those rounds so it always makes up for itself after a long round.

Sold DVC on eBay, I think I'm being scammed..

I bought some GHS for CEX.IO just to see what it's all about and it's pretty cool how it mines BTC, NMC, IXC, and DVC all using the one amount of GHS (so 1GHS mines 1GHS on all of those, doesn't divide it between them all but each one gets the total amount) anyways, that's besides the point, I ended up earning enough DVC which I have no idea what to do with becasue there is no trading DVC or IXC on CEX.IO.

I made a listing on eBay to sell 1.0 DVC as a CEX.IO Voucher and I sold it, got paid, gave the person the voucher code, and now they're telling me it didn't work. They're telling me the code was invalid but I just made it so I think I'm being scammed. Is there any way for me to see if the voucher was accepted and maybe they're just saying it's invalid so they get their money back?

I told them I would issue a refund as soon as I can confirm that the DVC was actually invalid because 1.0 DVC is now gone from my account and they're asking for a refund and I don't know what to do to prove that the voucher I gave them was valid unless I can prove it was accepted and they're just trying to scam me.

Any ideas? I tried contacting CEX.IO but they said all voucher transfer status is private for security so I don't know what to do from here.
