Re: [ANN][RIC] Riecoin: constellations POW *CPU* HARD FORK successful, world record

The next super block is at block number 164880, and there will one per week (ie once every 4032 blocks). They are expected on mondays but this actually depends on the probabilistic behavior of the network, so it can happen anytime, but there is a zone of maximum probability around mondays.
Now that the record has been independently verified and acknowledged, it would be really helpful if someone could point me to a list of sites that are "even remotely relevant".

Thanks and regards,
gatra

The press release looks good. To be honest, I don't know which sites/news outlets would be best to carpet bomb with it, as I don't really follow much in the way of math/prime number/altcoin news. But I would recommend at the very least slashdot, hackernews, phys.org, sciencedaily, the primes.utm.edu mailing list, ams, maa, scientificamerican.

Probably also cryptocoinsnews, coindesk, altcoinpress, /r/altcoin/, altcoinfever, altcoinspeculation, altcointoday, altcoinweekly, any others I may have missed. These are just the first altcoin news sites I was able to find on google, so are probably the ones that would be more likely to pop up for anyone else who doesn't really follow the stuff too closely.

I'm sure there are many more that people with much more knowledge than I could mention.

IIRC, dga is an associate professor at CMU? Perhaps a modified version mentioning his assistance with the project could be submitted (with his approval of course) for them to release?

I'll push it to my university and various clubs and people I know who might be interested in such things, see if I can't get a little momentum there.

EDIT: Might be an idea to make sure the website is updated with the most current info before sending out the release. If it gains traction there might be a significant spike in traffic and people interested in the coin, wanting to mine, etc.

So I haven't really had time to follow this at all, due to school and whatnot. Heck, I didn't really even know about the hard fork until after it happened (good idea & I like the implementation as well thus far btw).

But... why is it that if Riecoin has broken the 6-tuple record, that I don't find anything on the first 5 pages of Google about it? Was there some sort of press release prepared and sent out? I feel like this is the kind of thing that should have been fairly highly publicized - at least a few places would have picked it up, even if you did up a fairly simple release and just shotgunned it everywhere even remotely relevant.

Of course, it's possible I've missed something. In which case feel free to tell me to go back to lurking.

What you can do to help us is donate to the foundation, spread news about Riecoin, or simply posts on here a couple of times a day

I do the best I can to get news out... I've got about a half dozen people into Riecoin and I'd donate but I'm mining on my laptop so I'm not exactly flush with coins :p

I'm doing my best to get the word out. If the university/record breaking push day happens I'll definitely help out, I'm waiting to find out exactly what my summer looks like before I commit, but I have some good contacts in western Canada at least.

just tried to compile for win, no warranty of course - test and tell us...

Downloaded and running on Win7 x64 - currently using 2.7gb Ram with -t 8 -s 2100000000, consuming 0% cpu. Obviously also not finding shares.

Hey Riecoiners,

A mini widget was published on Google Play earlier today:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.riecoinfoundation.widget

The coin fetches price using a JSON call to Poloniex and Mintpal and convert it to USD.

Support Riecoin! Cheesy

Any chance of getting it to convert to CAD as well? Cavirtex is the primary reputable CAD$ exchange out there.

Thanks!

This is possible. Give me some time. I am working on an android wallet for Riecoin right now. Just resolved a portion of the problem I came across and resting for today.

Right on, if I knew Java I'd probably work on whipping it up myself. But I don't... and from what I understand, coding for Android can be an interesting experience. Really appreciate all the work you're putting into the foundation/community!

Sentiment poll -

I have the linux version of the next iteration of my riecoin miner.  It'll substantially reduce memory use on many platforms, and is a bit faster, and a better long-term building block.

It doesn't work on windows and I'm having a heck of a time debugging it.

Is there any sentiment towards releasing it where it only works on Linux and letting more people stare at what's wrong with windows vs. kicking at it longer and trying to fix it to have both win/linux ready at the same time?

Well, I'm primarily a windows user - both of the boxes I have mining are running windows. I know what *nix is good for, and it's good for lots of things. I frequently hate windows with the fir-y passion of ten thousand burning suns (less now that I simply re-image my boot drive every 4 months). But unfortunately windows has the software I need for my career.

I would really like to see a new version of the windows miner, especially if the *nix variant is already out. However, if it's a debugging/windows being a whiny bitch issue, I don't see any major problem with releasing the working one first. Anyone who pouts about it not working on windows is free to contribute to the codebase, I'm sure.

Attention for breaking the record will be good but I don't look forward to explaining it to normal people who ask.

"So they are now finding the largest primes?"
"Uh, no, now they are finding the largest prime 6-chains which means..."
"zzzzz...."

That's why I always make sure to mention "Riemann hypothesis... blah blah... one of the hardest problems in mathematics... blah blah... millennium prize of a million dollars if it can be proven or disproven."

Money makes people take notice.

"Which Bitcoin derivative takes on one of the hardest problems in mathematics? See our article for details!"

Pretty much writes itself. And any exposure is good exposure.

A thought - with a number of Primecoin GPU miners out now, how long do we think it will take for a RIC miner to be released? As soon as that happens diff is pretty much guaranteed to past 1857 if the new miners are at all optimized... which will break the record. Breaking that kind of record should be sufficient to get some serious mainstream media attention by itself (as long as no celebrities do anything really stupid that day), which should help in the recruitment of other interested parties ("We're going this for SCIENCE! And profit.").

When targeting universities, see who the top researchers in the prime number field are? Of course, now that I think of it, they have probably already heard of RIC.

September 17 (Riemann's birthday) would be a good date to target

Yes! Smiley

Any other important dates that happen sooner? That is six months out, it would be nice to get things moving a lot sooner.

Well, it would definitely be possible to find something sooner, I'm sure. But:
-Most schools are out over the summer, in north america at least, and I assume europe is on a similar timeline
-This gives plenty of time (five months actually) for the people involved with the foundation to get this organized (I might help after my summer timeline gels). I have a lot of contacts in the west coast Canadian universities and would be happy to see if I can't get my network interested in this.
-Gives lots of time to get the word out and give various bureaucracies to decide give it the go-ahead.
-This kind of thing needs momentum, rome wasn't built in a day, etc.

I think the September timeline is pretty much perfect if targeting universities.

Perhaps do a push with a different vector rather than universities? Maybe try to do a big corporate push? See if you can't get Google or Amazon or any of the big cloud computing orgs to donate a (minimal to them) number of cycles on a given day? Good press, would get other smaller orgs involved, I'm sure. Just a thought.

...
How about getting in touch with multiple universities around the world, particularly those who specialise in maths and computer science? Arrange a record attempt on a certain day, where all of the participating universities dedicate computing resources to mining Riecoin, in an attempt to create some record breaking numbers.
...
Something like this could get some real coverage and wouldn't be entirely impossible to plan and enact. A bit of setup, then an initial press release name dropping the biggest universities who are involved - this would prob help get a few more on board. Then a push to get coverage on the day (maybe a recognized radio show or podcast hosted from one of the participating unis).. and then, another press release, in an attempt to get some column inches once the inevitable records are broken.
...

This is an excellent idea, and would definitely help get the word out and get some serious media attention. The records alone would be enough to get good press, but getting a bunch of universities together to throw some computing power at the problem would definitely raise the profile as well. It may also get a bunch of students interested in Riecoin who wouldn't have otherwise heard of it - and university students tend to have the time, finances, and optimism to be early adopters and get involved with something like this. September 17 (Riemann's birthday) would be a good date to target - far enough out to get organized, get lots of people notified and get a buzz going, not far enough out to be completely out of sight/out of mind.

Perhaps starting by emailing the relevant student clubs/organizations at the target universities would be a good place to start - they are usually well stocked with the keenest students who are more directly connected to faculty members and may be better placed to plead the case to the people who could actually get this done rather than having the request be sent into the HR/PR black hole that most universities use as gatekeepers.

EDIT: September 17 is also a couple of weeks after classes start in many places - enough time to get people involved last-minute when they get into school, and before they get hammered with assignments, midterms, projects, etc.
