Re: Why did bitcoin go down?

can you link to that paper/article? I never heard of it. I don't think its bearish because of the existence of dark pools, but because a huge down swing like that will scare people into thinking twice about getting into btc at this price.

just an update though, gox says that they were not ddosed today, but that genuine volume of traders overloaded servers. https://www.facebook.com/MtGox

ill put in my 2 cents here. I was watching the depth chart very carefully from the time bitcoin hit 200 all through the drop to 100. I believe there was a massive dark pool sell order, combined with the ddos, made it impossible for people to withdraw their buy orders, and for other sellers to get in and sell. meaning whoever it was chewed through all the buy orders from 250 down to 105. i don't know how many coins that was, but it was a lot.

the reason i think this was a dark pool sell was that there was a huge spread once bitcoin hit below 200. sellers were selling still around 180-190, while all buy orders were being  sold down to 120 or so. Buyers would creep back up, but anytime they did they would just get eaten up by an invisible sell. This kept going on until around buys were at 105, while all non dark sell orders were at about 140. I presume whoever was selling did not want the price to completely tank, as they stopped before it broke below 100, which would of probably caused a panic.

now who knows whats gonna happen, but i think this is a very bearish sign.

Congrats to the guys at bitpay for being mentioned in one of my favorite economics and financial blogs.

Of note: The ability to pay by bitcoin via smartphone is making it much closer to a money. BUT, the key still remains the number of people who will accept bitcoins in payment. For something to become a medium of exchange, it must have near universal acceptance as money, within a region. Bitcoin isn't there yet, by far.

I suggested this in the securities thread, and this will be difficult to do now that glbse is down, but moparguy was verified. Not sure if this has been suggested, but it may be possible to get his information from nefario and directly talk to moparguy.  That was the whole point of verification, so that the share holders knew who they were buying shares from.

moparguy was verified on glbse. I wonder if it would be possible to get that data so that we can open a line of communication directly with him.  Would anyone here be able to do that?

just looking at the dividend payout, it looks like its relative to 1 btc. so if you can get in at .75 you are getting over 3% still.

imo this is the most undervalued mining stock right now. the stock is almost fully verified and if you do the math on the dividends per currently paying share, you are getting 3.5% yield per week at current prices. do the calculation on paid out shares and you are buying the equivalent of 10 mhash per share at this difficulty, and its not even a fixed mhash bond. Compare this to other mining stocks and it blows them out of the water.

There are a couple drawbacks though: the issuer holds 60k shares that could be dumped on the market at any time, so this adds a little uncertainty for future price and payouts. Also people don't know much about the issuer, not much reputation, so I think that scares some people off.

From when i learned about bitcoins, it took about a week and a half before i tried mining, and probably 3 weeks before I purchased any coin through the market.  I would consider that a very fast turn around time for someone going from knowing nothing about bitcoin to investing in it.  I spent most of my time learning about the technology, asking questions, and gathering opinions before I actually jumped in. I would not expect people to act that fast, particularly if they are not tech savvy.

Re: FirstBits.com - remember and share Bitcoin addresses
by

really cool idea.  I am assuming firstbits returns the earliest known address if there are several others that match the search. this way u avoid collisions with new addresses as they are added to the chain.

actually now that i think about it, what happens with addresses not in the block chain? for example, if a businesses had to generate a new address for every transaction and used your service.  unless you are saving every search address, its possible u would return the same firstbit address for different bitcoin addresses.

I noticed the same trends with market depth as your video.  I feel like there are some forces stabilizing the market at this point, because its way too flat for such an imbalance.  Because its so flat I bought and Im holding, hoping for a breakout.

At the time of this writing, gox is just coming back online, 107$ worth of trades have been made. The program seems to be confusing volume of trades with bids, as it shows $107.9 as the current bid.  Ask seems correct at $15, but bid should be also around 15.
