Our weekly whale is back! Come ramp up fast and get blocks!
This really makes me look forward to WHALE WEEKENDS!!!
*** The reason it's so profitable for the hundreds of us that mine here 24/7 is exactly because of the PPLNS (5Nd)--which we're all fully ramped up on--and when a whale joins for just long enough to get a block or two over the weekend, they've only ramped up 1/5th of the way, for example, so we still get decent percentages of the rewards, but in real-time we get a few more rewards faster than usual.
A real-world example from our last Whale Weekend was the equivalent of me running ~90TH/s instead of ~30TH/s!
...moving those numbers to something that didn't happen, would not just linearly affect the result - it would of course also make this month look a lot better.
That side-effect is a good reason not to worry about trying to 'monthatize' the block reporting.
For example, let's just say we hashed 365% at the end of April with no block, but 15% into May we found a block. Falsely, somebody would interpret the beginning of May as really good luck, but nay, nay. It took us 380% to get that block, which isn't horrible, but it's not lucky.
Actually, to be correct, you lose mining when luck is low and gain mining when luck is high. But ... you can never predict when either will occur. Hopping makes no difference to that. (Hopping just increases your variance above the pool variance)
I think of it like the gambler that keeps choosing a different number and color on the roulette wheel and thinking that they're better off than choosing the same number and color each time. All they're doing is introducing more variance! Lol
P.S. - I don't gamble, so if that was a bad analogy, well... Deal with it!
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: Anybody not currently mining here is missing a great opportunity for an 8 day ramp up to full rewards thanks to the recent boost to ~200PH
we all know this but still we like to see blocks - dont you?
I 'expect' to see blocks every 100%! This one's taking 2x as long, so I wouldn't be surprised to have a few quickies in the near future; I'm not 'expecting' it, though.
The best thing that could happen right now is a whale joining/failing over here--gotta live up to that 400PH thread title--and blast us through a few blocks. We'll all get YYYUUUGGGEEE rewards and forget all about mid-April!
I hate to say it, but: you just get a bigger piece of the pie in smaller pools with 'slower' blocks, and you'd get a proportionally smaller piece of the pie in bigger pools with 'faster' blocks... 10 x 1000 = 100 x 100...
I always wanted to get my hands on one of those R4's but could never manage to do so - is it really quiet enough to be in the same room with? I don't trust the videos I have seen lol
Get an old Canaan A741 - I first set one up a couple of years ago:
Under 50dB as a heater. You can make it slower (frequency) and quieter also. I have that in my lounge room each winter.
This time I'll try an A851 and A921 to see if they can be as quiet on very low settings)
It is all to do with the fan speed and thus if the operational heat is lower, the fan speed will be lower.
Another angle to try--since my 921 still seems impervious to volt/freq changes --is to set the default temp higher than default (e.g. 741 @ 95 instead of 90 = 75% fan, 921 @ 98 instead of 95 = 50% fan).
This helped in my case so the fan wouldn't try to fight as much at keeping the temps down. Maybe if Canaan comes out with a 921 firmware that actually responds to volt/freq changes, the above method may be used in conjunction with volt/freq changes too.
Edit: Oh, and the reason I'm hesitant to limit the fan directly is just in case some unforeseen heat wave causes it overheat since I didn't allow it to go up to 100% fan. That's just my personal preference, though.
we need some big mining farms to jump on board. or a crap ton of people in the 50 to 200 TH/s range would be nice as well.
Well, 100 more 100TH miners would only be 10PH... I don't even know if I'd consider that a 'whale' in today's hashpower race.
i would not consider it a whale either but I also do not consider 100 people to be a crap ton, I was thinking like 1000 people lol so we could get over 100 PH at least lol
Regardless, what I've noticed is that it seems easier to get one or two lucky blocks with a small-medium sized pool to make it a really profitable month rather than a bunch of lucky blocks with a semi-large pool.
FYI I think someone mentioned the newest S9 firmware disables SSH, which renders Awesome Miner useless, but this may need confirmed by someone else since I'm Canaan-only.
