Re: Cooling mining room
by

on 07/05/2018, 13:39:31 UTC
I would start with a fan on window #5 which would throw out the (hot) air at a faster speed.
Normally the pressure will try to normalize and this means that colder air would flow in from the other rooms.
It make sense. Outtacke fans should automatically create an ariflow. Until now I tried adding intake fans in 2 and 3 positions and instead of lowering temperatures I got an awesome +10°C in the room Embarrassed What do you suggest for the 12x24cm hole I have on the side of the wall (4) considering that there's fresh air in the other room?

Cooling mining room
by

on 07/05/2018, 10:56:57 UTC
I have a severe issue with my cooling system.

I have 50+ GPU in a room mining 24/7. They're all GTX 1070/1070ti and right now their average temperature is 84°C and their fans are spinning between 50 and 80%. In front of evey GPU I placed a 12cm fan but it's so damn clear that the real problem is that I am unable to dissipate heat. The room is hot as hell and the passive ventilation is not enough to cool the room. I prepared an awesome image with my paint skills that says everything Grin

http://dev.revhosting.org/bit/airflow.png

Here is my question. I don't fu**ing know how to configure the holes/windows I have. I tried with few setups and I got even hotter temperatures. Keep in mind that I have enough fans for all holes in questions. I'd like to avoid conditioned air solutions. What do you suggest?

Re: Formula to calculate expected earnings
by

Thank you Smiley

Yes, I am already able to pull data live from explorers of all altcoins and store them for later use. I'm interested in altcoins that support masternodes and for all of them I already have difficulty, network hash, ttf / block time, block reward, last block (I don't think that it's necessary in the formula). I'll take as example still RAP.

At the time of writing this I know for sure that during the last 10 days I mined between 130 and 180 RAP per day. Min and max values are so different because the coin is small and hashrate fluctuates a lot. Anyway it shouldn't be a problem for now. Let me add all variables.

My hashrate = 22000000 (hash/s)
Network hashrate = 175377838 (hash/s)
My share = 22000000 / 175377838 = 0.1254434 (1.25%)

TTF/s = 128 (seconds)
Emissions = 86400 / 128 = 675

Block Reward: 2.976 RAP
Difficulty = 5.660038

The amount of RAP mined per day at 22000000 hash/s should be equal to ((My share * Emissions) * Block Reward) therefore ((0.1254434 * 675) * 2.976) = 251.99 RAP.
The result is 71% greater than reality Sad For sure I should add the difficulty in the formula but I don't know how.

I correct myself. I don't need to use it on Excel in a strict sense. I'm using Excel just to make calculations on the fly. In the end I'll need to add the formula in a software I developed to manage and monitor all my rigs remotely and automatically.

Right now I am already "pinging" services like Whattomine, Mastenodes.online etc. to perform automatic actions but Whattomine gives values for a very small amount of altcoins. I need to apply the same formula to all other coins so that I can use the auto-switch to mine masternodes depending on my priority list, the amount of nodes I want and of course the days needed.

Formula to calculate expected earnings
by
Volcomstarr
on 02/05/2018, 18:34:14 UTC
Hi,

I'm trying to find a formula to calculate expected earnings when mining depending on my hashrate. I know the formula that is used for BTC but I'm mining altcoins (prevalently neoscrypt). Before you ask I don't want to use websites like Whattomine since I need to play with results on Excel. It shouldn't be so hard but I am having problems. I am playing with this formula I found on StackExchange:

Quote
Calculate your share of the network hash rate for that particular hash algorithm (your hash rate divided by the network hash rate), let that be HR.

Calculate the emission by unit of time (block reward times 86400 divided by block time in seconds), let that be E.

Calculate your expected average coins mined in a day (HR times E), let that be C. Note that variance will be high, unless you mine on a large pool, or have a large HR.

Calculate the price in the coin you want to convert to (C divided by exchange rate, or C times exchange rate, depending on whether it's expressed by altcoin per bitcoin, or bitcoin per altcoin, respectively).

If you want per second, or per MH, scale accordingly.

The problem is that the result of the formula is hugely different from reality. In this precise moment I am mining for testing purposes RAP with 2 of my rigs and I have the following values:

  • My Hashrate is 22 Mh/s
  • Network Hashrate is 264 Mh/s
  • 24 Hour Avg Block Time is 127 seconds

Let's insert my data in the formula:

HR = 22 MHs / 264 MHs = 0.08333
E = 86400 (1 day) / 127 TTF = 680.3149
C = 0.08333 * 680.3149 = 56.69

The formula says that I should gain 56.69 RAP per day but in reality I am getting between 120 and 150 RAP per day! What is wrong in my calculations?

I don't know where I should ask this question. I hope it can help.

I've a considerable amount of RAP (even though I don't know their value Grin) and the wallet no longer works. I'm on Windows and I have several wallets on my PC that uses the same software (GBX, INN etc.). They only wallet that doesn't work is RAP. When I start it I see the splashscreen then the window goes out of screen on the right. I can't access it. I can only see hover preview on my taskbar with application title "Rapture Core - Wallet" and a big white screen below. I tried to install multiple times but it still doesn't work Cry

Hey Volcomstarr, feel free to jump onto our Discord server at https://discord.gg/NMgQEn8 and I can give you some real-time support there. Or, feel free to email me at rapturecoredev@gmail dot com and I'll can work through it with you via email if you prefer. We're just about to release an updated wallet, but there shouldn't be any issues on the current build. Hard to tell from the description if the wallet is opening and is just drawing strange, or if it's running into another issue.
Solved! The wallet was opening for real out of screen. Last time I opened it from my office PC (34 inch display 21:9 widescreen) via Remote Desktop. My home PC is 22" and Windows for unknown reasons keeps opening the wallet it in the non-existent part of the screen Undecided In any case thank you for reply.

Cannot get balance the of my Masternodes from explorers

I own 3 masternodes but I still don't understand why I cannot retreive informations about my balance using explorers. I can normally see it via SSH with the proper command but according to explorers "Address not found" is the only possible response. I can successfully inspect all my wallets but not my masternodes.

Before you ask yes, all my masternodes are active, functional and receive rewards. Am I missing something important?

Edit: I got it! Our sysadmin blocked all ports Smiley

Board for 6 and 12/13 GPU - p.s. I hate MSI!!!
by
Volcomstarr
on 28/01/2018, 16:05:05 UTC
** You can skip this part **

I would like to start this thread offending MSI but let's move on. I'll just say that I hate they way the use their damned asterisks! I purchased a Z270 M3 board and I realized that it doesn't support 6 GPUs. I am not a total noob therefore before purchasing it I read all specifications and the manual and they only talk about M2 slots that disable specific PCI ports when in use but in reality there was something more! After spending more than 5 hours in their forum I started to see a lot of quotes by MSI staff to people having my same problem:

Quote
* 2 x PCIe 3.0 x16 slots (supports x16/x4 mode)*
* 4 x PCIe 3.0 x1 slots
* The PCI_E4 slot will be unavailable when an M.2 SSD module has been installed in the M.2_2 slot.
** The PCI_E2 slot will be unavailable when an expansion card has been installed in the PCI_E5 slot.
** The PCI_E3 slot will be unavailable when an expansion card has been installed in the PCI_E6 slot.
All these mysterious asterisks that they keep quoting from Z270 M3 specification page, ARE MISSING! I don't really know where the hell this information was written! There's NOTHING in the manuial and NOTHING on their website but they keep quoting this important information without any source Angry I'm gonna send back this damned board asap.

** Start here **

Now that I am calm, could you please recommend me motherboards that supports 6 and 12 (or 13) GPUs? I already know the following models:

6 GPU:
- ASRock H81 Pro BTC+ (6 GPU)
- Gigabyte GA-Z170X-GAMING 6 (7 GPU)
- BIOSTAR TB250-BTC (6 GPU)

12/13 GPU:
- ASRock H110 Pro BTC+ (13 GPU)
- BIOSTAR TB250-BTC PRO (12 GPU)

But since I no longer trust myself and I am starting to hate the stupid use of asterisks, could you please give me confirmations and recommendations?

Thank you a lot!

Thank you for reply.

Well, I do understand perfectly but let's suppose that I have an huge amount of coins of a specific currency due to mining or due to the fact that we're crazy (we are! Grin).
How can I can the best profit from it? More masternodes or a single one with tons of coins? I would say that it should be the same if we don't consider the costs of having multiple VPS and IP addresses but I am not sure about it.

More coins or more masternodes?
by
Volcomstarr
on 22/01/2018, 20:36:47 UTC
Hi,

In this precise moment we have an Arctic Coin masternode that costed us about 200 €. We used it as a test before taking more expensive masternodes like Innova or bigger ones. The question is that I don't understand one particular thing...

More coins or more masternodes?
Let's say that a masternode of a particular cryptocurrency requires 1000 coins. Now let's suppose that I already own 5000 coins. Should I run 5 masternodes each one with 1000 coins or a single masternode with 5000 coins? Which of the two gives more profit? Is it the same?

Thank you!

Personally I'm thinking to store all my wallets on a metallic plate (QR code) and copies on plastified paper. I want to store the first in a safe-deposit box in my bank insured for 30.000 € - even if the value of my wallets in theory could be greater - and the latter in a secret and inaccessible place that even CIA can't find Grin As if it isn't enough I'm going to use my personal "system" for the letters and numbers wrote on the paper.

Frankly I don't understand why people don't use safe-deposit box. For less than 30/50€ per year you can keep your box in the vault of a bank. 1 key is for you 1 key is for the guy with a gun that lives in the vault. Evey time you enter you have to sign the attendance register. If your box is stolen or if the bank cannot find it (e.g. earthquake, meteors etc.) the insurance company have to pay out 10-30k (or even more) immediately with real money even if your box was empty. Way better than an USB device in my opinion.

p.s. Yes, I am a bit paranoid Shocked

keeping crypto in bank valut is like shooting yourself in the knee :-)

Why? What's your opinion? Don't forget that I am paranoid so I must know it! Grin

Re: What if I want to create a datacenter for mining?
by

I'm gonna bump my owm post with new details.

For now we decided go with an "asap" configuration starting with 10 kwh solar panels and 2x UPS (can't remember their wattage) with cheap energy from power gird. The building is situated in Italy (Sicily) therefore we can enjoy almost 365 days of sun Cheesy We decided to install all our rigs inside electric containers like this one...

http://www.eleco.mo.it/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Container-Cabine-Elettriche-9.jpg

Each container has conditioned air from one side and heat extractor on the opposite side. We put all containers inside the building for extra safety. I still have to figure out if in this specific scenario fans installed in front of GPUs are necessary. I don't want to waste power and money fans that are probably useless. To host masternodes we are going to use a standard datacenter therefore there's nothing special to say.

I am open to suggestions!

I want to buy this card but franky the story behind this board is fuzzy. I mean their claim is loud and clear «19 GPU» but in reality you can have 13 conventional GPU and 6 mining ones. Could you please give me clear answers to the following questions that everyone needs to hear? Grin

  • I still don't understand if I can mix AMD and Nvidia cards respectively on Windows / Linux. I want my GPU to be 100% GTX 1070 but this question could become crucial later on
  • We all know that the issue is caused by Asus itself but I don't get if this is a clear bug or a wanted "feature"
  • Asus promised a BIOS update (maybe) aimed to solve this bug (or feature?). What's the hell is going on? Their latest update doesn't change anything
  • Final question: buy or pass? If we pass what is its closest alternative?

What if I want to create a datacenter for mining?
by
Volcomstarr
on 07/01/2018, 00:42:32 UTC
Hi,

During the last few months I've started to invest in this market of cryptocurrencies and now I'm starting to build my first GPU-based mining rig. I shared my experience with a few friends of mine and quite soon we realized that we all want to create a large-scale infrastructure. Basically I am talking about creating a datacenter for mining.

We have lot free space, terrains, solar panels and most important one of us has factory that is already consuming megawatts of energy. We can also manufacture custom stuff of any material directly on site (e.g. racks to contain most of the components). The idea was to start next month with something like 50 GPU and few Antminers just for fun and eventually go for a large-scale infrastructure if it's worth with hundreds of ASIC and GPU. Obviously we have money to support this project and we won't cry if it's a total failure. We can stand that.

This may seem like an odd question but what are the best practice to create a mining datacenter? Keep in mind that more or less I know how to "play" with a conventional datacenter for hosting providers (it was my old job). I suppose that ASIC/GPU miners and servers share many aspects, requirements, dos and don'ts. No dust, low temperatures, ventilation and stuff like that but is there something peculiar or relevant on which I should focus for an ecosystem made of miners?

Thank you for your time Smiley

Go for it, and enjoy your ride.
Thank you.

You can't run 19 cards on the Asus B250 mining expert motherboard without adding at least 6 Nvidia P106 mining cards. Otherwise 13 cards is the max.
D'oh! Few hours ago I bought all parts except the motherboard so maybe I can still change my mind about this Asus board.

What's the story behind this 19 GPU motherboard that can only run 13 general-purpose GPUs? I finished to read many articles and posts about this issue and I am very confused. What's the point of supporting 19 GPU when 6 of them must be Nvidia P106 with no output ports that use the same power of their counterparts (the GTX 1060 that I don't want to run)? Please tell me if there's a workaround Cry like using Linux and/or a mix of AMD and Nvidia cards. Is it possible that there are still no BIOS updates by Asus to fix this problem?

Why go for 1500w? I think that too expensive, better go for 1000w or max 1200 and then add 1 more psu later (1000w or 850w)
I did some calculations and probably you're right. Let me explain.

I'll start with 6x GTX 1070. Each of them uses between 150 watt @ 30 Mh/s out of the box. I've seen people getting 30 Mh/s using just 105 watt with a bit of tuning. Long story short the power consumption should vary between 900 watt (worst-case scenario) and 630 watt (best-case scenario). I also need to consider the consumption of other parts (CPU G3900, ASUS B250 Mining Expert, RAM 1x4GB, 1xSSD, 6x 12cm fans). Probably we're around 1000 watt therefore we have...

1st PSU to power 6x GPU and the entire system: 1000 watt (max) / 730 watt (min). If everything I said is correct, yeah, I should take max 1200 watt.

Now let's suppose that I one day want to add 6x additional GTX 1070. I'll need to attach another PSU to the ASUS B250 to provide energy just for the GPUs therefore...

2nd PSU to power 6x GPU: 900 watt (max) / 730 watt (min). A PSU with 1000 watt should be enough.

3rd PSU to power 6x GPU: same exact story.

If everything is correct I saved a decent amount of money so thank you Grin

I used to use a DPS-800GBA and a breakout board which I paid a total of $35 for with FS and it outputs 1000W on 220V and is platinum rated IIRC and comes with four 6-pin connectors. The PSU was also not loud at all- definitely wasn't the loudest part of my mine. Some of the higher-power PSUs are loud, but not all of them are. If you can solder at all, it's possible to just solder on the 6pin connectors by reading pinouts for a specific server PSU and save money by skipping a breakout board.
I understand but I am not that good to "play" with PSU. I prefer to go for a plug and play solution even if I'm going to pay more.

Whenever possible I just use one PSU - usually a server one like the ood -2000BB w/ a breakout.  It's by far the cheapest option, and will give you great quality power.  With 13 1070's, you'll be at the limit of a DPS-2000BB, so get the DPS-2500BB, which has 2320W.  On my 13 card rig I'm actually running 2x 1650w PSU's.

Good luck with the build - it's a great motherboard, and a beast of a machine.

Good point but I prefer to avoid server-grade PSU. They're cheap but also noisiest compared to desktop-oriented ones. Moreover I'll need additional cables and usually they're less efficient. The DPS-2000BB for example is 80 Plus Silver (85%) against 80 Plus Titanium (90%+). I know that it costs 4 times more but money is not a problem.

the config is OK, except one thing - GPUs - is it relly wise to buy NV gtx 1070 which cost about $400-420 and push 30 Mh/s on ETH instead of RX570 8GB/ RX 580 8GB card, which can push ( after tuning) same 30+ Mh/s but costs about $290-320  - that is actually 35% difference. this is huge man.

first of all you don't mine ETH with nvidia, so you need amd here, second you are okish wit the 1500 watt for 12 gpu, if you underpower them a bit, they do 120watt x 12 it's there...

I admit that I decided to go for gtx 1070 just because AMD scares me a bit. Usually AMD cards are cheaper which is a plus but they use more power, have slower support for drivers (DAG issue has been fixed in... months? can't remember) and need more tuning. On the other hand I see people getting 30+Mh/s on the gtx 1070 farming ETH and consuming 105 watt with just few restarts. Isn't it impressive?

Let me make it clear. Money is not a problem. I'm not trying to save a few bucks. All I want is a mining rig with the best possible hasrate / power consumption ratio. As far as I know an RX 580 can't give me 30 Mhs @ 105 watt mining ETH. That said, if we don't consider the price of these cards, can we say that the gtx 1070 has a better watt-per-hash ratio than the RX 580?

Thank you for reply.

One of my rigs is 13 cards, but I'm using the ASUS B250 Mining Export board...
WTF!!! You gave me a super-awesome info! Shocked I wanna kiss you lol Grin A consumer-grade motherboard with 19 GPU slots by Asus! I immediately changed my mind. I'll go for it. Does it run smoothly? I mean is it plug and play or do you do need to play with settings in order to make it work with an high numer of GPUs?

Now I'm gonna recalculate all things since I want to make a system that allows me to add 1 PSU (same brand, same wattage) every 6 GPUs (same model). Probably the AX1500i (1500 Watts) is too much but its smaller brother the AX1200i (1200 Watts) is probably too close to the limit... I mean...

1st array of 6 GPU (max 150 watt each) --> 900 watt
2nd array of 6 GPU (max 150 watt each) --> 900 watt
3th array of 6 GPU (max 150 watt each) --> 900 watt

But one of the PSU should also power the motherboard, CPU, RAM, SSD etc. so probably the best option is...

1st array of 6 GPU + System --> ≃1200 watt powered by AX1500i
2nd array of 6 GPU (max 150 watt each) --> 900 watt powered by AX1200i
3th array of 6 GPU (max 150 watt each) --> 900 watt powered by AX1200i

Is this a good idea?

On the risers, the only recommendation I would make is replacing the USB cables with quality ones you buy separate - with the risers I've worked with, 99% of the problems I have with them are the cheap USB cables they come with.
Nice Smiley
