Re: [ANN][POOL][VARDIFF] Coin Catcher beta launch - profit switching scrypt pool

Due to server costs, Coin Catcher will be closing down in the next couple of days. Please point your miners at another pool to avoid any downtime.

Thanks to all our 1000+ users that got onboard since our launch in February - it was a fun project and it's a shame to have to bring it to an end!

Apologies about that - there were some server issues earlier today which gave us a few hours of downtime. All is fixed now.

Hey, glad you like the pool. We've found that mining CHNCoin and Elacoin generally give us the least amount of variance and so allow for consistent daily earnings. Elacoin's confirmation times aren't ideal, but mining it should give higher payouts when averaged out over a few days. If we're able to grow our hashrate it will give us more options, but right now these coins are the most reliable Smiley

After a couple of weeks of testing, we are pleased to announce that Coin Catcher is now using variable difficulty (VARDIFF).

During our beta, vardiff was our most requested feature by far, as the majority of other multipools are fixed at 512. This should allow for less variance, particularly with less powerful mining hardware.

We've also improved our algo which has brought our average payouts in line with most other pools.

Fees are still 0% for the time being, so give it a go - any feedback is welcomed.

wondering what network the irc channel is on?

To be honest we haven't really been using it as our user base has been small so have been dealing with issues via email and on here.

It should be set up as 'coincatcher' on freenode anyway.

Our main goal from the start was to be more transparent than other pools, and we'd planned to stick to the smaller coins and grow organically. Unfortunately, daily profits are the most important thing for most people (which is completely understandable) and so user retention has been tricky. At the moment DOGE is performing so well that being unable to mine it puts us at a real disadvantage. Hence why I'd like to have the option, to give users more reason to join and stay with us.

I think our user interface and transparency will give us an edge as we continue to build on it. But without comparable profits to other pools I can't see us surviving long term.

Looking for a stratum / python developer

I'm the developer of a multipool named Coin Catcher (www.coincatcher.net) and have been running a small scale beta for the last month.

The system itself has been really stable but there's a fundamental issue that is holding us back. With a pool hashrate of around 100-200 MH the variance and risk is far too great to take on coins such as DOGE / LTC. We risk not finding any blocks in a whole day which would mean no payouts to the users (it would be game over!). The only viable option is to mine smaller coins which give us consistent payouts, but often lower than some competitors.

We're currently running ahmedbodi's fork of stratum completely unmodified, using separate instances for each coin and port switching between them. I'd like to add a couple of new features and think it'd be best to work with someone more specialised in this area (my skills are more geared towards PHP web applications).

The 2 features I'd like added are:

1. For certain high difficulty coins we'd like the ability to proxy work to external pools. This will prevent our hashrate being the limiting factor and so will give us much more regular earnings. It's important that we still keep track of shares in our db so users can be paid out correctly.

2. Functionality to switch coins without disconnects. I.e. running just a single instance of stratum and switching coin deamons internally, using data queried from MySQL.

If anyone is able to help with this please let me know, and PM me with costs etc. Happy to pay in BTC / fiat / any other altcoin!

Cheers

Do you have any plan on providing an EU server ?

ALSO, please add "Reddcoin" , "USDe" , "Kittehcoin" , "Florin" , "GlobalCoin" , "Doubloons", "Auroracoin" , "Earthcoin". These coins are in top 3 profitable coins most of the time.

An EU server will be the next location we add, but it won't be possible until we're out of the beta and have grown our total hashrate some more. I'll keep you updated.

Quite a few of those coins are on our upcoming list already - you should start to see new ones appearing each day. Thanks for the suggestions!

Really like what you're doing and I'm going to keep hashing with you for awhile.  I'm recommending you on cryptocointalk.com but a fair question was raised - interested in your answer.

What some people want to know is how we can be mining coins that bring an estimated .06ish per day but the performance number shows something larger than that.  I said that the estimates below are moment to moment and that the number at the top is an avg over 24 hours - but I don't often see the estimates in the coin list performing at a level that should raise our average.

Can you offer some explanation?  Thanks.

Hey, thanks for recommending us - it’s much appreciated!

It’s hard to say without looking into the specific times with more detail, but there are a couple of likely causes:

- The last few days we’ve seen coins we mine move up and down in profitability quite a bit. The estimated earnings as you said is based on 24 hours so is always trailing behind by many hours.

- The values shown in the coin list are simply based on price and difficulty at the moment. In reality, some coins perform much better and others much worse. Feathercoin for instance seems to generally out-perform our predictions, which bumps up the estimated earnings, but not the value shown in the coin list. Soon we may start to adjust the values in the list based on their past mining performance, which should bring everything a bit more in line.

Hope that makes sense, and cheers again for hashing with us Smiley

GrandCoin is now active again. It was disabled because CoinChoose is currently reporting an incorrect block height, and this is one of our reference points.

Hey, thanks for giving the pool a try.

We've been having real trouble getting the MinCoin wallet to sync to the correct blockchain. It was mined earlier today but on a bad fork, so we disabled it and covered the losses that were incurred from it - we are taking the hit for any issues that are out of the users' control. So in the meantime we're being very careful with MinCoin until it's back on the right chain, but it's high on our priority list to get this coin sorted.

GrandCoin is reporting a problem - will look into it.

Thanks for the feedback - we're still working hard to get the pool as profitable as possible.

Final update on the situation - everything has been fixed at Cryptsy's side so the pool has returned to normal. All balances have now updated.

Cryptsy have said that problems should be resolved within 2 hours. If so, balances will be updated in time for today's payout.

There's a problem with Cryptsy's API today which is preventing trade data synching to the pool. We are still trading the coins as usual to prevent loss of earnings, but it means that they may not appear as traded in your account until Cryptsy fixes the issue. This is out of our control and is affecting other pools too.

If they are unable to fix the problem today, a proportion of today's earnings may be carried over to tomorrow's payout. We've contacted Cryptsy and will keep users up to date with any progress.

Hey, No problem! I'm not giving up on you yet...

Thanks! Today's payouts were in the range of 0.009-0.01 BTC / MH / day so we seem to have caught up with most other pools now.

As of right now, with 14mh+ on the pool, in the last 48 hours I've made .07 a day.. It's not meeting the expectations stated... gonna let it ride out the rest of the week or so and see if it changes or not.

Hey dankroxel,

Thank you very much for giving us your hashes over the last couple of days - it's really appreciated. As we're a brand new pool we've had a few bugs & issues since launch that have been affecting earnings. We've been monitoring and adjusting the system all day to optimise payouts, and we're making progress.

To be honest, after trying just about everything to optimise the pool's earnings, we stumbled across the most unexpected bug earlier. Our prices had stopped syncing with Cryptsy, and so the profitability algorithm was running off of outdated information. What are the odds?! All fixed now so we should see big improvements.

Thanks for sticking around - we will definitely be rewarding miners long term who have helped us out through this launch phase.

A couple of standard account features that were requested have now gone live:

- 'Forgotten password' link next to the login form
- 'Account Settings' screen in the top right menu, allowing you to change your password

Anyone who has forgotten their password should now be able to reset it to gain access to their account.

Thanks very much! I'll keep an eye on the stales issue in case it can be improved with the current pool setup. The particular coins we're mining may be playing a part, ping time to the server also.

If you check the balances screen you'll see that bitcoin is now at the top regardless of the amount Smiley The only time it will disappear is if you have a 0 BTC balance.
