While I understand the joke and the sentiment, I'm not really a fan of oversimplifying stuff to good partner = assets increases, bad partner = assets decreases. People need to be careful with definitions and make sure there is no underlying assumption that they didn't realize. Not to mention other factors that also affect your life situation. Let's say your partner is so calculative that they don't want to have children until you're 40 years old, is that still a good or bad partner? Some people would debate that for years.
Anyway, at the end of the day, ideally you'll talk about important stuff like finance and so on before marriage so both parties understand what to expect and how they'll go around troubles that might come their way. CMIIW.
