Re: Bitcoin vs centralized Coins like Ripple
by

Ripple/XRP is making dumb people way more vocal.  The confident ignorance is mind blowing on X.  So many non-technical people who are so full of themselves it's disgusting.  People literally brainwashed by paid influencers, the "XRP (bot) army," advertisements, and blatant misinformation.  XRP is brain cancer.  The sooner is dies, the better for humanity.
We are in complete agreement here, and this is a downside of the modernity that we live in. Instead of being locally shunned, dumb people are becoming vocal and joining in massive groups that encourage each other's ignorance. As this shouting continues to grow it negatively starts influencing other people who are not that confident about their knowledge or views, creating new suckers. This should not be allowed, but I don't see a good way of legally solving this. It would be very hard to prove before a court any intention of harm using current laws. Further, I see no good way of establishing a law that goes against things like this without establishing a totalitarian nightmare. At the very least we could disallow influencers from being a thing. They continue to fool vast amounts of people on many topics, Ripple or otherwise.

Agreed.  I think the only thing we can really do is pop into conversations we see to drop a reminder that yes, it's a centralized, pre-mined, self-allocated, incomplete scam ledger, that has zero real world value, has no actual banks using it and the "partners," were PAID to be called that which are literally banks that Ripple PAID to run a pilot that they completed and did not continue using, runs paid FUD campaigns, pays for condescending bot engagement, pays for influencers to shill it, pays for insane amounts of advertising, actively promotes blatant misinformation even in pair articles, lies constantly, outright brain cancerous SCAM.  It's the antithesis of "crypto."  Their only positive cash flow is from dumping the self-allocated pre-mined vapor tokens on gullible, naïve, non-technical, likely poor retail buyers.

Banning influencers from being paid to shill securities (yes XRP is a fucking security, spare me please) would be a great step in the right direction.  Financial crimes of this scale that defrauds people should be punished way, way more harshly IMHO.  It ruins lives when people are conned into thinking they may have a chance to better their families.  XRP/Ripple leaders themselves need imprisoned, can't change my mind.  They're that nefarious.

Re: Can Bitcoin eliminate local banks?
by

Not until "using Bitcoin," is obfuscated in the UI/UX.  People like us have to remember that 99% of people are "normies."  As in they operate on a steady diet of social media, their 9 to 5 job, immediate family, and McDonald's.  They can barely (and more and more often not even) operate a computer.  People's personal digital privacy and security is an afterthought to almost everything, and even when they're reminded of it, they could care less.  Totally apathetic.  If they were trusted to handle their finances like we handle custodying Bitcoin, they would be damn near immediately ruined.  Banks will always play a role in my opinion, it's how we integrate it all together is what's going to be interesting.  Maybe the banks morph into custodians?  Only time will tell.

Out of sight, out of mind.  Keep keys very hard to access that would require doing something other than the most fun thing there is to do, and that is sitting on your computer.

I do my best to not be obnoxious about it and I don't overcomplicate things in technical language.  But when I see an opportunity to bring it up, I usually take it.  It typically ends with them being intrigued and me parting ways with $5 or $10 of Bitcoin.  I've been doing this since very, very early on.  Lots of painful transactions were made looking back haha, but I have zero regrets.  Most forgot they had it, some were hooked and are now financially independent.

What are your experiences and profit expectations running Lightning?
by
jumptheramp
on 20/02/2025, 15:11:19 UTC
Howdy, Bitcoin Talk people!

Long time lurker here, been lurking since around the beginning, finding Bitcoin around the time the concept was being floated around in the Distributed.net community, time to break the mold and actually participate here!

I've been running my own full node for a long, long time, run a full node on Liquid Bitcoin, and ran full nodes for some other chains.  I'm very familiar with using Lightning, but haven't delved into the technical side of it yet in terms of running the back end.  I'm now considering jumping into the Lightning world now that it has had a decent chunk of time to mature.  But before I go full time on it and dedicate fresh new metal to it, I'd like to hear some experiences from you all so that I can decide whether or not the time and money investment is worth it for me.

If you've ran or are running Lightning for any significant amount of time and have a moment to reply, I'm curious about the following:

  • How long did you run Lightning?
  • In your experience, how technical does proper maintenance and security get over time?
  • How large (you can give ranges if you don't want to be specific) was your bankroll with your node?
  • What was your profit margin like?
  • Were you actively trying to network/open channels publicly?

No response is a bad response so feel free to contribute any and everything you feel like sharing.  The more information gathered the better!

Thanks for your time, I look forward to hearing about how it all went or is going for you.

You're right. It should be fixed now: revisit the promote page. Sorry for the inconvenience.

The system was confused because years ago you paid an evil fee, which gives credit toward copper fee, but it was never registered as having more than 0 confirmations, and then in the intervening years the wallet containing that address was taken offline. I think I fixed it so that this shouldn't happen anymore.

Awesome, it works now!  Thanks a lot for the help, I appreciate it.  No problem at all, it has been a long time haha.  Problem fixed, mission accomplished, job done, all good!

I'm glad it was resolved positively. I suggest closing the topic as the problem has been resolved.

Yep, closing now, was just making final check.  All set!

It's because the "You have paid a total of 0.00029863 BTC" includes both your earlier "evil fee" payment (which also gives credit toward copper membership) and your more recent larger payment, but the former has zero confirmations. You have to wait for that transaction to be confirmed as well so that the total amount has 1+ confirmations.

I paid that upon registering back in 2021 for using a VPN, that had confirmations back then I always send decent fee'd transactions.  Maybe since it has been so long it got mixed up somehow?  The wallet address I was given to pay for copper only had the 1 transaction going to it from my copper membership payment.

Once your transaction has received 1 confirmation, return to the payment page, and select Copper Member on the form that appears.

You will now have an additional Copper Member rank displayed in your profile in addition to your main rank.

Yeah, I was expecting something like that, but I'm not getting any option at all.  Here's a screenshot:

Are you sure the transaction received 1 confirmation? Try clearing the cache in your browser and then reload the page.

Yep, I have 6 or 7 confirmations now.

Just cleared all cache, cookies, browsing history, everything just for good measure and I'm still getting the same result Sad.

Try unlogging and then logging back in to the forum.

I tried that when I cleared all browser data, then once again.  I just tried in a different browser and it's still like that Sad.

Re: What is the hope of Shitcoins?
by
jumptheramp
on 19/02/2025, 19:54:15 UTC
It's simple.  The hope is to drive value to the token temporarily so that the central entity behind them can extract (scam) as much money as humanly possible from the community.  99.99%+ of altcoins/shitcoins have this sole purpose, even when they're painted as solutions to something.  The faster participants realize this and find Bitcoin, the better off they (and we) all are.

To make your post more responsive and genuine and to also draw the right attention it's proper for you to actually add the transaction ID to your post just for members that will be replying here to be able to verify that you actually paid for the copper membership.
Nevertheless my best guess is that the copper membership should either be automated or the final badge will be granted by an administrator but still it should take some time for them to verify the payments and for the copper membership to actually reflect.

I'm assuming that it's automated like the page says.  It says to wait for 1 confirmation to come back to the page to fill out a form.  I revisited at three confirmations and I see that my balance due is now 0.00000000 BTC which used to be the amount that I paid so I'm assuming that it registered my payment, but the form it mentions isn't appearing.  I'd rather not publicly share my transaction since I value the privacy of my funds.  I'm not really worried about a badge or anything like that, just trying to escape the time constraints and would like to be able to upload images.

I purchased a copper membership but it seems to be stuck and I'm not sure who to message about this.  I tried to search for solutions but am not having any luck.  On this page https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=credit;promote I get this:

Quote
You can pay a one-time fee in order to increase the capabilities of your account. Be warned that:

You can still be banned if you break the rules. You will not get any special treatment.
These memberships are not guaranteed to last forever, or to offer the same benefits forever.
No refunds will be given.
Available paid memberships:

Copper - 0.00000000 BTC: Allows you to post images even if you are a newbie, reduces the time-between-actions limit, and provides some of the same benefits as being of natural Member rank.
You have paid a total of 0.00029863 BTC, pending confirmation. This is reflected in the above prices. (To get the normal price, add this amount to the above prices.)

Pay to the Bitcoin address ADDRESS CENSORED BY OP. Once your transaction has 1 confirmation, revisit this page and then use the form which will appear in order to wear your new membership. Your transaction will not be accepted until it has 1 confirmation. Bitcoin network fees and exchange/wallet withdrawal fees will not count toward your payment.

We are commonly asked how we know that you sent a payment. The address above was newly generated just for you, so when any BTC is sent to it, we will know to credit it to your account. It is all automatic.

I sent the payment and it has several confirmations, the price is now reflected as 0.00000000 BTC but the form it's mentioning isn't appearing for me.  Am I doing something wrong?  Or is this a kink that needs worked out?

Thanks for reading!

Re: Real estate for rent listings in the United States that accept cryptocurrency
by
jumptheramp
on 18/02/2025, 20:06:53 UTC
Here, I will be posting Real estate for rent listings in the United States that accept cryptocurrency. One of the current listings is a 1 Bed, 1 Bath Apartment located in Jackson Heights, NY. https://cryptopostit.com/listing/1-bed-1-bath-apartment-in-jackson-heights-available-for-cryptocurrency/

How are you finding rental properties that accept Bitcoin for rent?  I'd be very interested in actually doing this.  The closest I've got to that reality is paying my share of rent to my room mates in Bitcoin like over 10 years ago.  Painful memory haha but no regrets Cry.  Would love to find a property owner that accepts it directly even if it's me buying Bitcoin each month and sending it to them to square up on rent.
