Regaining access to wallets in veracrypt after MacBook catastrophe - REWARD
by
andrew2406
on 07/06/2025, 04:25:21 UTC
I’m reaching out for urgent assistance with a complex data recovery case involving a 2015 MacBook Pro with a soldered internal SSD (~1TB capacity). The device may have contained a hidden Veracrypt or TrueCrypt volume holding cryptocurrency wallet data. We’re seeking to recover this encrypted volume or any associated wallet files.

I am happy to offer a very generous reward to anyone who can figure out how to get this done

Background:

   •   The MacBook likely had a hidden Veracrypt volume stored on the internal SSD.
   •   This volume contained critical crypto wallet files, including:
   ◦   Cake Wallet (Monero) – likely stored with a .keys file or 25-word seed phrase.
   ◦   XMR (monero official wallet)
   ◦   exodus wallet
   •   The computer was later:
   ◦   Involved in a failed Linux dual-boot install (possibly overwriting sectors of the drive)
   ◦   Reformatted and reinitialized with macOS APFS volumes, which now show nearly the entire drive as “free space”
   •
   •   The Veracrypt volume is no longer visible or mountable, and tools like TestDisk and PhotoRec have not located it.

What We’re Hoping To Recover:

   •   The hidden Veracrypt volume, if still intact deeper on the SSD (e.g., in unallocated or untouched sectors)
   •   Any fragments or full copies of:
   ◦   wallet.stronghold
   ◦   .keys, .json, or .txt files
   ◦   Plaintext or partial seed phrases
   •
   •   A forensic clone or chip-off recovery if required to bypass TRIM or file system interference

Technical Notes:

   •   SSD is soldered (non-removable)
   •   Veracrypt header may have been overwritten
   •   TRIM status is unknown (but Linux install failed, so possibly never triggered)
   •   Visible volumes now show APFS structure with ~3TB free on each

Request:

Could your team perform:

   •   Full forensic-level SSD image extraction (chip-off if necessary)
   •   Sector-level entropy scanning for encrypted volumes
   •   Recovery attempts for Veracrypt hidden volumes (mounting with offsets)
   •   File carving or keyword searches for seed phrases or wallet files

I’m happy to provide the full MacBook for recovery, or any other details needed.

Please advise:

   •   Whether this is within your scope of services
   •   The process, expected timeline, and potential costs
some extra detail:on what we tried;

When we got the Mac back it had errors booting, believe it was the ? Icon showing. Every step here took a long time, system seemed to we very sluggish

We connected another Mac via usb and did a DFU revive (100% a revive, not a restore) which then made the Mac boot very quickly. I don't recall if that was the original install of macOS from before the laptop was taken or if it was a fresh install.

From there we installed veracrypt to try and access that partition. We didn't have any success.

Because the SSD is soldered on we then installed a Linux distribution, FreeBSD on an external hard drive and then tried to access drive again

Three passports. Thanks for asking.
You don't see that every day but multiple citizenship aren't unusual. Your VPN usage complicates things and makes it difficult for the casino to know where you were at the moment of playing. If the IP logs don't show you played from New Zealand, the casino won't be able to know it. If you were aware that Australia was a banned territory, why access the casino through an Australian VPN server? It's also possible that you only found out about the restriction after the casino told you. The next thing that doesn't go in your favor is you entering an Australian address and submitting an Australian PoA.

I am curious what decision CasinoGuru will make and in whose favor the verdict will be.

Their last response was

Dear andrew2406 and SpinBet Casino,

Thank you both for providing comprehensive information regarding this matter. Given its complexity, I will need some additional time to thoroughly review all the details and formulate Casino Guru's official stance.

As a general principle, we do not consider VPN usage a valid reason for the confiscation of a player's winnings, unless it is used to bypass the casino’s geographical restrictions or to exploit country-specific bonuses unfairly. Based on the information provided so far (particularly the references to Australian IP addresses) it appears the situation may be quite the opposite. It seems the player may have accessed the casino via a VPN routed through a restricted country.

However, if geo-blocking is indeed in place, and the site should be inaccessible from Australia, I’m unclear as to how this access was technically possible.

Dear SpinBet Casino,

I would appreciate your clarification on this point, along with any supporting evidence, such as login logs showing corresponding IP addresses. You are welcome to send this information directly to my email address at jakub.m@casino.guru.

Thank you for your cooperation.

I never once stated that I have nothing to do with Australia. I have dual-citizen ship for both Australia and New Zealand. I own property in Australia, and live in New Zealand.
This is the first time you mention that you have an Australian citizenship if I am not mistaken. In your Casino Guru thread you said that you think your first identity verification request was denied because you uploaded copies of your UK passport instead of your New Zealand one. How many passports do you have? Two, three, more?

On that very same line you are referencing me uploading my UK passport, in that same sentence, I clearly state I have multi-citizenship.

Three passports. Thanks for asking.

After your initial withdrawal attempt failed in October 2024 and you were asked do undergo KYC, you didn't take any other actions until March 2025. Is that correct? Can I ask why you waited that long?
About the 'Take a Break' mode. You said that it started on 18 March 2025, but you attempted to access and verify your account only on 26 March 2025. What happened between 18-26 March? Why would the 'Take a Break' mode become active at a time when you didn't do anything with your suspended Spinbet account?

The SpinBet representative claims that you registered your account with an Australian address. Is that correct? They also say you uploaded a proof of address from Australia. In your response to them, you said that you incorrectly entered the address. I would like to know how does one incorrectly enter that they are in Australia if they are in New Zealand? Additionally, how did you mistakenly upload a bill as PoA from Australia if you are in New Zealand and you have nothing to do with Australia?

Please note that I am not accusing you of anything. These are just some of the things in the story that I find weird and unusual, assuming you are telling us the truth.

I have no idea why the 'Take a break' mode became active at that time. That is merely the date that the pop-up informed me it was activated. Not by me - by Spinbet.
I never once stated that I have nothing to do with Australia. I have dual-citizen ship for both Australia and New Zealand. I own property in Australia, and live in New Zealand.

Someone look at the casino.guru thread and see what these pathetic thieves are claiming. Now apparently there is duplicate accounts?

Quote
Hello andrew2406,

Thank you for your message. We would like to clarify that your statement is not entirely accurate in this case. Our decision was based not only on the incorrect address provided, but also on the fact that we always process payouts to players, regardless of the amount, provided the player complies with the terms and conditions of our website.

When registering, you explicitly confirmed twice that you had read and accepted the terms and conditions of our website.

However, you have violated several important sections of these terms:

3.1 The Casino accepts players only from those countries and regions where online gambling is not prohibited by law. It is the player’s sole responsibility to verify the gambling laws and regulations of their jurisdiction before placing bets on the website.

3.3 It is entirely and solely your responsibility to ensure that your participation in the games does not breach any applicable laws. Depositing real funds and playing for real money is subject to the laws of your country, and it is your sole responsibility to adhere to these regulations.

3.5 Players from the following countries and their territories ("Restricted Countries") are not allowed to deposit or play real money games: Albania, Angola, Aruba, Australia, Barbados, Belgium, and others.

9.1 Each player is allowed to create only one (1) personal account.

9.2 Creating multiple accounts may result, at the sole discretion of the Casino, in the termination of all such accounts and cancellation of any payouts. The player must not provide access to their account or allow any third party, including minors, to use the website. Any returns, winnings, or bonuses gained through a duplicate account will be reclaimed by us, and players are required to return any funds withdrawn from such accounts.

9.7 We prohibit the use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to mask your location and/or identity. Any returns, winnings, or bonuses gained by masking your location or identity will be reclaimed by us, and players must return any such funds withdrawn.

These sections clearly outline that using a VPN, accessing the site from restricted countries, and creating multiple accounts are all strictly prohibited. When registering a second account, you did not contact customer support to close your previous account and address the migration issue to New Zealand.

For more detailed information on our rules and policies, you can review them here: Terms & Conditions.

There is no half-truth in this case from our side. We are solely guided by the rules of our website, which are strictly enforced, as confirmed by various reputable resources, including Casino Guru.

Best regards,

Spinbet Team

First of all, casino guru is only a review site and not a reporting site, i hope you set this to know
You should visit casino.guru, they are not just a review website. It's also the reason why a number of forum members here have sometimes recommended posting their casino complaint on casino.guru after posting their complaint here in the forum. Anyway, casino.guru mediates a lot of casino issues posted by gamblers on their website.

Did you read my initial post, bro?

First of all, casino guru is only a review site and not a reporting site, i hope you set this to know, secondly, waiting for 24 hours without any positive response may not be too much, you can wait more, especially when the complaint made was on weekends, at least we can exercise up to three days waiting for an issue to be resolved by the gambling casino, i also see that you have huge amount to such extent to have deposited on your casino wallet, which i think you have your own reason for this, but be informed that in case of anything happening to them, your money is gone as well with them.

Okay, first of all, how is it only for reviews? There is a massive section just for complaints?
Secondly, the complaint was made on a Tuesday...
And last but not least, the huge amount of money in the casino are my winnings. I deposited $548 NZD and rode it up to $49,997 NZD.
I feel like that's why they are trying to pull this bullshit.

"but be informed that in case of anything happening to them, your money is gone as well with them."
THAT IS THE POINT OF ALL THIS. I'D LIKE TO WITHDRAW THE MONEY.

Thanks for not contributing anything to the thread.
